More specically the invention proposes the construction of a mouth piece for a pipe, cigarette holder or the like which has a main longitudinally extending smoke passage in a manner to permit smoke to be drawn from the burning tobacco contained Within the pipe bowl or cigarette.

vStill further it is proposed that a plurality of branch transverse passages be connected with said longitudinally extending smokevpassages in a manner to permit cool air to be drawn into the passages to be mixed with the smoke in a manner to cool the same.

Still further it is proposed to locate the branch transverse passages at such a position in said mouth piece that they may be controlled by the engagement of the lip thereover while the mouth piece is in ones mouth for controlling the entrance of the air therethrough.

Still further it is proposed to provide a mechanical means in the form of a slide movably mounted in said mouth piecel and adapted to be normally shifted in a manner to close said transverse pass-ages when desired. p

Still further it is proposed to provide a plurality of auxiliary slides on said slide being individually adjustable foi selectively controlling the passageof air through said transverse passage.

For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objectsV and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.

The cool smoke pipe, cigarette holder, or the like, according to the invention includes a mouth piece lll for connecting with a pipe, cigarette holder, or the like. In the drawing the mouth piece l0 is shown associated with a pipe having a bowl portion Il into which tobacco is adapted to be placed. A main longitudinally extending smoke passage l2v extends through the mouth piece i8 and connects with the bowl portion Il for permitting the smoke to be drawn therethrough from the burning tobacco into ones mouth.

A plurality of branch transverse passages I3 extend from the smoke passage l2 to the top face of the mouth piece lll. These transverse passages permit air to be sucked into the passage l?. to be mixed with the smoke coming from the burning tobacco for cooling the same before it enters ones mouth. These transverse passages I3 are so positioned along the length of the mouth piece lil that ones upper lip may be used to control the entrance of air therethrough. The lip may be engaged against the open edge of the passages i3 for preventing the entrance of air or may be removed therefrom to permit free entrance of air.

The operation of this form of the invention is as follows:

Tobacco is placed within the bowl ll of the pipe and the same is lit and the mouth piece Eil is engaged into ones mouth for conveying the smoke from the bowl to ones mouth. If desired the transverse passages i3 may be left uncovered for permitting outside air to pass into the smoke passage l2 and mix with the smoke coming from `the burning tobacco for the purpose of cooling the same. lf too much air isI entering the transverse passages I3 and it materially thins the smoke coming from the burning tobacco, several or all of the transverse passages may be closed by engaging ones lip thereover for pre' venting air passing therethrough into the smoke passage. l

According to the modication of the invention shown in Figs. 4 and 5 the construction of the mouth piece is similar to that previously described except io-r the provision oi a mechanical means for controlling the passage of air through the transverse passage i3. In this form of the inventionthe mouth piece i0 is formed of separate sections consisting of a main portion Illa and a top portion Ib. The top portion Ib is formed on the side of the smoke passage I2 which has the transverse passage I3 and the passages extend therethrough.

The adjacent faces of the portions IIla and IIlb are provided With a cut out area in which a slide I4 is mounted. 'Ihis slide is provided with a plurality of openings I5 spaced from each other a distance similar to the spaces between the transverse passages I3.

The sides of the slide I 4 are formed with outwardly extending lugs I4a which extend to the sides of the mouth piece I for permitting the slide to be moved to position in which the passages I3 and the openings I5 will be aligned or in a position in which the passages I3 and the openings I will be disaligned. It is also possible to move the slide I4 into a position in which the openings I5 will be partially aligned With the passages I3 for permitting the limited entrance of air through the passages to mix with the smoke coming from the burning tobacco for the purpose of cooling the same.

In other respects this form of the invention is identical to the prior form and the same parts may be recognized by the same reference numerals. According to the modification shown in Figs. 6, 7 and 8, the construction of the mouth piece I0 is similar to that previously described except for the provision of the slide I6 for simultaneously closing all of the transverse passages I3 and an individual slide I'I for each of the transverse passages I3 for the purpose of individually closing the same as desired. In this form of the invention the mouth piece I Il" is also formed of a main portion Illa and a top portion Ib similar to that shown in Figs. 4 and 5. The slide I6 is longitudinally movable and is provided with a plurality of openings which are adapted to align with the passages I3. The openings I8 are spaced from each other the distance similar to the distance at which the transverse passages I3 are spaced from each other.

The auxiliary slides are slidably mounted in recesses I6a formed in the top face of the slide I6. 'Ihese slides II extend beyond the sides of the mouth piece I0 and are adapted to be used for shifting the slide I6 longitudinally of the mouth piece for aligning or disaligining the openings I8 and the passages I3. Each of the slides I'I is formed with an opening I8 which is adapted 'to be aligned with its respective opening I8 in the slide I6 and its respective passage I3. These slides Il are adapted to be shifted transversely of the mouth piece I0" and the slide I6. When the openings I8 and the passages I3 are in alignment the slide I'I may be individually shifted to align or disalign its respective opening I9 with its respective opening I8 and passage I3 for controlling passage of smoke through its respective passage I3.

While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:

l. A cool smoke pipe, cigarette holder, or the like, comprising a mouth piece for a pipe, cigarette holder or the like, having a main longitudinally extending smoke passage, and a plurality of branch transverse passages through which air may be sucked to cool the smoke, and said transverse passages being controlled with ones lips, a slide movably mounted on said mouth piece and in one position being adapted to cut oil said transverse passages, said slide being formed with a plurallty of openings alignable with said transverse passages permitting a free passage of air therethrough, and a plurality of auxiliary slides on said slide for selectively controlling said transverse passages when-said firstmentioned slide is in a position in which its openings are aligned with said transverse passages.

A cool smoke pipe, cigarette holder, or the like, comprising a mouth piece for a pipe, cigarette holder or the like, having a main longitudinally extending smoke passage, and a plurality of branch transverse passages -through which air may be sucked to cool the smoke, and said transverse passages being controlled with ones lips, a slide movably mounted on said mouth piece and in one position being adapted tocut 01T said transverse passages, said slide being formed with a plurality of openings alignable with'said transverse passages permitting a free passage of air therethrough, and a plurality of auxiliary slides on said slide for selectively controlling said transverse passages when said first mentioned slide is in a position inv which its openings are aligned with said transverse passages, said iirst mentioned slide being slidable longitudinally on lsaid mouth piece and said auxiliary slides being slidable transversely of said mouth piece.

A cool smoke pipe, cigaretteholder, 0r the like, comprising a mouth piece for a pipe, cigarette holder or the like, having a main longitudinally extending smoke passage, and a plurality of branch transverse passages through which air may be sucked to cool the smoke, and said transverse passages being controlled with ones lips, a slide movably mounted on said mouth piece and in one positionbeing adapted to cut off said transverse passages, said slide being formed with a plurality of openings alignable with said transverse passages permitting a free passage of air therethrough, and Aa .plurality of auxiliary slides on said slide for selectively controlling said transverse passages when said rst 4mentioned slide is in a position in which its openings are aligned with said transverse passages, said auxiliary slides being mounted in grooves formed in the top face of said first-mentioned slide for permitting said auxiliary slides to be used for shifting the position of said rst-mentioned slide.

In a device of the class described, a mouth piece having a main longitudinally extending smoke passage, a plurality of transverse passages extending upwards from said smoke passage through which air may be sucked to enter said smoke passage and mix with the smoke passing therethrough to cool the same, a slide longitudinally slidably mounted in said mouth piece and movable for simultaneously opening and closing all of said transverse passages,and a plurality of auxiliary slides transversely slidably mounted in said mouth piece for selectively closing certain of said transverse passages in the open position oi said Erst-mentioned slide.

In a device of the class described, a mouth piece having. a main longitudinally extending smoke passage, a plurality of transverse passages extending upwards from vsaid smoke passage through which air may be sucked to enter said smoke passage and mix with the smoke passing therethrough `to coolthe same, a slide longitudinally slidably mounted in said-'mouth piece and movable for simultaneously opening and closing all of said transverse passages, and a plurality of auxiliary slides transversely slidably mounted in said mouth piece for selectively closing certain of said transverse passages in the open position of said first-mentioned slide, said auxiliary slides being mounted Within a groove formed in the top face of said first-mentioned slide so that the ends of said auxiliary slides may be used for moving said rst-mentioned slide longitudinally of said mouth piece.

In a device of the class described, a mouth piece having a main longitudinally extending smoke passage, a plurality of transverse passages extending upwards from said smoke passage through which air may be sucked to enter said smoke passage and mix with the smoke passing therethrough to cool the same, a slide longitudinally slidably mounted in said mouth piece and movable for simultaneously opening and closing all of said transverse passages, and a plurality ofauxiliary slides transversely slidably mounted in said mouth piece for selectively closing certain of said transverse passages in the open position of said Erst-mentioned slide, said slides being located in said mouth piece intermediate the ends of said transverse passages. 4

In a device of the class described, a mouth piece having a main longitudinally extending smoke passage, a plurality of transverse passages extending upwards from said smoke passage through which air may be sucked to enter said smoke passage and mix with the smoke passing therethrough to cool the same, a slide longitudinally slidably mounted in said mouth piece and movable for simultaneously opening and closing all of said transverse passages, and a plurality of auxiliary slides transversely slidably mounted in said mouth piece for selectively closing certain of said transverse passages in the open position of said first-mentioned slide, said slides having openings alignable with said transverse passages in the open position of the slides.
