J. N. CAYO May 6, 1941,

ORNAMENT Filed May 24, 1940 INVENTOR. Juuus N. CAYo ATTORNEYS Patented May 6, 1941 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 3 Claims.

This invention relates to ornaments to be employed in decorating a room or the like. It has for its objects:

First, to provide a new and improved ornament of the type described.

Second, to provide such an ornament which may be produced inexpensively and which is attractive in appearance.

Third, to provide such an ornament which has a pictorial background and a three-dimensional figure therefor all enclosed in a suitable frame and behind a suitable curved transparent material which permits viewing of the figure and the background from substantially all angles.

Other objects and advantages pertaining to details and economies of construction and operation will appear from the description to follow. The invention is defined in the claims. A preferred embodiment of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:

Fig. 1 is a perspective view of my new and improved ornament.

Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view taken on line 2--2 of Fig. 1.

Fig. ;3 is a fragmentary sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 1.

Fig. 4 is a view of the back member employed in making my ornament.

Fig. 5 is a plan view of a top or bottom element.

My new ornament indicated generally at I consists of a back 2 which is disposed vertically. A top member 3 and a bottom member 4 project from the top and bottom edges of the back. They are preferably of curved form as shown. The top and bottom members 3 and 4 are joined to the back by means of nails 5.

At the sides of the face 6 of the back 2 are vertically extending grooves I which join with curved grooves 8 which extend peripherally at the sides and front of the top of the bottom member 4 and the bottom of the top member 3 and which receive all of .the edges 9 of a curved sheet I0 of transparent material. The sheet may be flat until assembly and is given and retains its curved form because its edges are all disposed in and concealed by the grooves I and 8.

On the face of the back 2, I provide a pictorial representation H and on the top of the bottom 4, I provide a three-dimensional figure I2 representing subject matter related to the pictorial representation II. The sheet I0 encloses both the pictorial representation I I and the threedimensional figure I2 and because of the curved form of the sheet and the open sides of the ornament, it is possible to view both the pictorial representation I I and the figure I2 from substantially all angles.

My ornament is extremely attractive in appearance because it gives a three-dimensional effect. It can be made very inexpensively since the sheet material may be Celluloid or a similar transparent product. It does not have to be formed since the grooves in the back and top and bottom members will give it the desired form.

The terms and expressions which have been herein employed are used as terms of description and not of limitation. There is no intention in the use of such terms and expressions of excluding equivalents of the features shown and described or portions thereof. It is recognized that various modifications are possible within the scope of the invention claimed.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by t e a ent is:

1. In an article of the class described, the combination of a vertically disposed back having top and bottom members projecting from the top and bottom edges thereof to partially enclose the face thereof, vertical grooves at the sides of the face of the back joining with curved grooves in the side and front periphery of the top of the bottom member and the bottom of the top member to receive and conceal the edges of a sheet of transparent material, a sheet of a. transparent material with its edges disposed in and concealed by said groove and held in a curved form thereby, a pictorial representation on the enclosed face of said back, and a three-dimensional figure representing a subject related to said pictorial representation disposed upon the top of said bottom member and enclosed by said transparent sheet.

2. In an article of the class described, the combination of a vertically disposed back having top and bottom members projecting from the top and bottom edges thereof to partially enclose the face thereof, vertical grooves at the sides of the face of the back joining with curved grooves in'the side and front periphery of the top of the bottom member and the bottom of the top member to receive and conceal the edges of a sheet of transparent material, and a sheet of a transparent material with its edges disposed in and concealed by said groove and held in a curved form thereby.

3. In an article of the class described, the combination of a vertically disposed back having top and bottom members projecting from and face of said back to receive and conceal the edges of a sheet of transparent material, and a. sheet of transparent material with its edges disposed in and concealed by said groove and held in 5 curved form thereby.

JULIUS N. CAYO.
