8Claims- The present invention relates to an apparatus for shaping glass, and particularly to means for altering the shape of a desired portion of an article which has been given a preliminary shape. The reshaping facilities of the past with which applicant is familiar have resorted to the use of implements of one form or another which move relative to the part being reshaped. These reshaping implements have sometimes been referred to as wiping fingers because they wipe the part as they reshape it. This wiping action tends to scratch the glass and is to be avoided if best results are to be obtained.
An object of the present invention is the production of reshaped articles of improved quality.
Otherobjects of the present invention have to do with improved forms of apparatus for the reshaping of glass articles.
The invention embodies among its features facilities for holding an article in either an upright position or in an inverted position, heating parts of the article to be reshaped, and imparting a desired shape to the heated part in such a manner that the reshaping tool imparts the desired shape to the glass without relative motion occurring between the tool and the glass.
In the accompanying drawings Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a manually operable structure embodying the invention;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the structure shown in Fig. 1 but with certain parts in a different operating position;
Figs. 3, 4 and 5 illustrate details not clearly disclosed in Figs. 1 and 2;
Fig. 6 is a side elevation, partly in section and partly diagrammatic, of a structure embodying the invention in which the operations are carried on automatically;

Such article is held in a suitable retaining cup 23 carried by a post 24. This post sets in a socket 25 and is mechanically coupled l0 by'levers 26 and 21 to a foot pedal 28 by a pin 29 passing transversally through the post and slotted openings in lever 26.
By depressing pedal 28 an article 2! in the retaining cup 23 may be elevated into engagementit with a stop 22, as illustrated in Fig.2, which 20 ported on a bolt 32 carried by upright members 33 and 34 of the bed l2, the forward end of which is ,provided with upstanding slotted plates 35 and 36 through which the shaft 46 passes. The plate 36 has adjustably secured thereto a cam 25 4! for determining the path of travel of a' cam follower 42 fixed to the shaft 46 and arranged in the same plane with that of the shaping tool 45. Also, the shape of the slots in plates 35 and 3B are determined by the natural path of movement It follows, therefore, that by seizure and drawing forward of member 3| through the medium of handle 20, shaft 46 and the shaping tool 45 carried thereby are drawn forward and downward, against the 35 tension of a suitable restoring spring 30, over a path determined by the contour of the slots and in so doing the shaping tool imparts a desired predetermined shape to the article. Also, as the cam follower 42 moves about the earn it rotates the shaft 46 and the shaping tool, thereby prewiping movement. After a reshaping operation has been completed'handle 20 is released, as is the pressure from foot pedal 28, thereby permitting restoration of the several parts to their initial positions and the removal of the article 50 from the retaining cup.
In the reshaping of some articles it is desirable to impart a shallower impression in the article than permitted by the slots in plates 35 and 36. This may be accomplished by the use of a stop block, such as the block 43 mounted on plate 35.
Also, the apparatus is arranged to enable it to be readily modified to handle smaller or larger articles. This is accomplished by mounting the article retaining cup socket 25 on a plate 48 which is slidable back and forth with respect to the base II by means of an adjusting screw 49 (Fig. 3), so that an article of different size held by a correspondingly sized retaining cup can be brought into proper position with respect to the shaping tool. Obviously, different sizes of shaping tools and shape determining cam for imparting other shape characteristics to the ware may also be substituted for those shown.
In the form of the invention illustrated in-Figs. 6-9, the principle of operation is as already described, but the apparatus is designed for operation in combination with a bum-01f machine which, after burning oil? the moil of an article, reheats a portion thereof to be-reshaped and presents the article to the shaping apparatus.
In order to avoid complicating the disclosure, applicant has merely shown a fragment of a burn-off machine generally designated illustrating one of its plurality of article retaining vacuum cups 52 with an article held therein and indexed into a position to be operated on by a shaping tool 45', it being understood that prior to attaining this position the article following burn-off of moil therefrom is subjected to the action of burners similar to those illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2. Parts 20', 24', 31', 35', 4| and/ 45' have functions which correspond to similarly designated parts of Fig. 1 and are mounted on a base ll slidable vertically on a supporting structure 60 resiliently supported by a roller 6| resting on a cam 55.
As a cup 52 of the burn-off machine is brought to the position illustrated in Fig. 6, a suitable bleeder valve 56 thereof is actuated to bleed air from a control valve 51 which in known manner moves to a position to feed air to the left-hand end of a cylinder 53, thereby driving the piston and the associated connecting rod 54 therein to the right. The cam 55, above referred to, is rigidly connected at one end to this rod and is otherwise supported by a roller 58. As the cam 55 is moved to the right by shaft 54, it raises base II to orient the shaping apparatus in the same position relative to the article as accomplished in Fig. l by depression of pedal 28 and in addition raises part 20 into the path of movement of a finger 62 carried by the rod 54. As-
the stroke of this rod is being completed finger 62 engages part 20 and through the medium of a link 64 advances member 3| to the right to effect the shaping operation in much the same manner as such operation is performed manually.
Application of air into the right-hand end of cylinder 53 to effect restoration of the apparatus to its initial position results from restoration of the control valve 51, which occurs consequent to actuation of a bleeder valve 65 at the termination of an indexing period. This operation is subsequently followed by the movement of cup 52 to a position in which the article held by it is released onto a suitable conveyer (not shown) while another cup, containing an article heated in the meantime, is brought into position for reshaping by tool 45'.
Obviously, if ware of a different diameter is to be reshaped a suitable horizontal adjustment of the shaping apparatus relative to the burn-off machine is, necessary. Similarly, if articles of a different height are to be reshaped, a suitable vertical adjustment of the shaping apparatus is necessary. To meet these requirements the supporting structure 60 is mounted for vertical movement on a carriage 61 horizontally movable on a base 68. The required vertical and horizontal adjustments are obtained by manipulation of adjusting screws 69 and 10.
What is claimed is:
1. In a glass shaping apparatus, a rod-like shaping tool, a shaft by which said shaping tool is supported at one end, means for moving said shaft over a path determined by the path over which it is desired to move the shaping tool in performing a shaping operation, and means for turning said shaft about its axial center while it is moving over such path.
2. In a glass shaping apparatus, a rod-like shaping tool, a shaft by which said shaping tool is supported at one end, means for moving said shaft over a path determined by the path over which it is desired to move the shaping tool in performing a shaping operation, and means comprising a fixed cam and a cam follower carried by said shaft for turning it about its axial center while moving over such path.
3. In a glass shaping apparatus a rod-like shaping tool, a shaft having one end of said shaping tool rigidly fixed thereto, means providing a, path of travel for said shaft corresponding to that it is desired to impart to said shaping tool, and cam means associated with said shaft for forcing it to turn about its own axial center While being moved over said path.
4. In an apparatus for shaping a pouring lip in the top of the sidewall of an open topped container, a container support, heating means for that portion of the container to be lipped, a shaping tool, a support to which one end of said tool is rigidly secured, means for effectingrelative movement between said supports to bring the free end of said shaping tool into the container, means for moving said tool support over a path which brings said shaping tool into shaping relation with the heated portion of the container sidewall, and means for turning said tool support about its own axial center during its movement bed having a plate fixed thereto with a curved slot therethrough, a member arranged in slidable relation with respect to said bed, a shaft carried by said member passing through the slot of said plate, a shaping tool carried by said shaft, means for effecting relative movement between said bed and member to move said shaft over a path determined by the curvature of the slot in said plate, and a shaping tool supported on said shaft and moved therewith to perform a shaping operation.
6. In a structure of the character described, a bed having a plate fixed thereto with a curved slot therethrough, a member arranged in slidable relation with respect to said bed, a shaft carried by said member passing through the slot of said plate, a shaping tool carried by said shaft, means for effecting relative movement between said bed and member to move said shaft over a path determined by the curvature of the slot in said plate, means associated with said shaft and plate respectively for effecting a movement of said shaft about its own axial center as it is being moved from one part of the slot to another, and a shaping tool supported on said shaft and moved therewith to perform a shaping operation.
