Description
Jan. 6, 1942. A. ZADEK 2,268,684
BATTLE [I II .1. 40 LE Filed Oct. 22', 1940 INVENTOR 2 ATTORNEY Patented Jan. 6, 1942 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
This invention relates to a toy rattle and has for its object to provide a rattle with a cylindrical head wherein one or more moving units are confined to a guide fixed in the head, and the units in their movements abut the ends of the latter to produce certain sound effects particularly pleasing to a very small child.
A further object of the invention is to provide a rattle of this character in which certain sounding devices, e. g. bells or the like, are fixed at each end of the guide and produce sounds in response to the blows struck by the moving units as they are moved into contact with the sounding devices.
A still further object of the present invention is to provide a flexible handle for a rattle of this character, wherein reciprocatory movement of the rattle head is greatly facilitated.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by means of the combinations and arrangement of parts described in-the following specification, set forth in the appended claim and illustratively exemplified in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a substantially longitudinal sectional view of one embodiment of the invention;
Figure 2 is a substantially transverse sectional view of the rattle taken on line 22 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is 'a side elevational view of a further embodiment of my invention showing parts broken away to describe otherwise hidden parts.
Referring to the drawing, l denotes a cylindrical rattle head closed at its opposite ends by caps H. The head I0 is provided with a holder or socket I2 disposed on its outer surface at the mid portion thereof, the holder comprising a hemispherical shell attached at its equator to the head. An opening I3 is provided in the crown of the shell to receive one end of a tubular handle M, the end thereof in the shell carrying two flanges l5 embracing the Wall of the shell surrounding the opening l3. The free or outer end of the handle supports a ring [6 in the conventional manner of devices of this character.
A guide spindle I1 is supported at its ends in openings or sockets IS in the caps H, the spindle being disposed coaxially of the longitudinal axis of the head Ill. The spindle I! is provided with bell devices [9 adjacent its opposite ends to form sounding abutments for the end units of a plurality of slidable hammers 20. Each hammer 20 consists of a hollow metal disc having a center opening 2| to receive the spindle and allow easy movement along the latter.
In the embodiment of the invention illustrated in Figure 3, the spindle I! supports or carries only one hammer 22 which is a cylindrical member having a longitudinal bore 23 through which the spindle projects. To facilitate in producing the reciprocal movement of the rattle head II], the handle 24 may be made of flexible material, e. g. rubber tubing, as illustrated in Figure 3.
In operation, the child grips the handle of the rattle and swings it backwardly and forwardly causing the hammer or hammers 2022 to slide along the spindle l1 and strike the bells [9 at opposite ends of the head. The flexible handle 24 merely facilitates the swinging motion of the head 20-22 to beat with greater force against the bells.
Having described my invention and the manner in which the same operates, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A rattle having an elongated cylindrical head with the ends thereof supporting a coaxial spindle, closed hollow hammer units slidably carried by said spindle, said cylindrical head having its cylindrical wall spaced apart from said hammer units, bell devices fixed at the ends of the spindle adjacent the ends of the head and against which the hammers strike in their extreme movements along the spindle and a handle attached to the side of the-cylindrical head substantially midway of its length and projecting at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the head.
