1 Claim.
This invention relates to improvements in a combined book match and writing kit and is directed more particularly to a novel device where a writing instrument or instruments is provided in combination with a book of matches of more or less conventional type.
As will appear the above and other objects and advantages are accomplished by providing a combination Writing kit and book match including retaining means for releasably holding a writing instrument and, if desired, other writing materials. Book matches heretofore known usually have no other useful purpose which is a decided objection in the minds of advertisers who use book matches as an advertising medium. Accordingly, .we have devised a' novel means whereby such an objection is overcome.
It is another object of the invention to provide a compact and inexpensive package or kit which may be easily and neatly carried in a pocket or a pocketbook or the like.
Other prime objects of our invention include first, to provide a simplified construction of a combination match case and writing kit; second, to provide a device which is flexible in character so that it serves a wide variety of purposes, and third, to provide an improved device which may be made more economically and with fewer operations in the manufacture of its parts, as well as in the assembly thereof, than prior devices known in the art.
With the foregoing and various other novel features and advantages and other objects of our invention as will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more particularly pointed out in the claim hereunto annexed and more fully described and referred to in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a device embodying the features of our invention;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing a writing instrument which is adapted to be a part of the combination device shown in Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3 is,a perspective view of a plurality of matches which are used in the device shown in Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the invention will now be described. Like numerals refer to like parts in different figures of the drawway.
a cover member consisting of a flexible sheet. This sheet includes a front cover portion l0 having a back cover portion 12 hinged to its uppermost edge. Preferably there is a retaining flange I4 extending from the bottom edge of the front cover portion I0 behind which the free end of the front cover portiton l2 may be engaged.
The flexible cover consisting'of portions l0, I2, and I4 may be made from paper, cardboard, leather, cloth or other similar sheet material. They may be integral parts which are hinged together as shown or they may be separate parts which are connected together in some suitable A plurality of paper book matches 29 are provided and these are held in position relative to one of the cover member portions, such as l2 which surrounds the same as by means of a staple 22 or the like. The staple 22 also may secure the retaining flange 14 in a position parallel to and spaced away from the back cover portion It with the paper matches 20 disposed therebetween.
According to the form shown in Fig. 3, there is, in the approximate center of the body part of the book of matches 20, a cut-away portion 30. This provides a space into which the end of a specially prepared writing instrument 26 may be inserted.
When the back cover portion I2 is engaged by the retaining flange l4 with the paper matches disposed between walls [0 and I2, the kit is, of course, closed. The recess 30 and the writing instrument 26 are such that the latter is more or less frictionally held therein by the adjacent matches and the writing instrument may be removed therefrom by pulling the same upwardly from its position in the pocket.
The writing instrument 2B is preferably in the shape and size of one or more matches so that, when in place in the kit, it may be in alignment with the other matches whereby it looks more or less similar to them so as to create a pleasing effect to the eye. Furthermore, this tends to produce a tight fitting and a securely held combination of matches and writing instrument.
There further may be provided upon the inside of the front cover portion H) a plurality of sheets of paper 42 which are stacked together and fastened thereto as by means of a staple 44 or the like. These sheets may be written upon with the pencil and torn off after use. It will be understood that the device may thus be con- In the drawing, the book package comprises veniently used for keeping golf scores, bridge scores, etc., as well as for the making of other desired notes.
Furthermore, when the kit is closed, the paper sheets have a tendency to make a tighter fitting combination of parts within the cover all to the end that the writing instrument and the paper sheets which are loose and free at one of their ends are less inclined to move out of position.
As has been said, the plurality of leaves 42 are attached to each other to form a stack and they are also attached to the cover portion [0 by a staple 44. Instead of a staple 44 or a plurality thereof, stitching or any other of the conventional means may be employed. In any event, the leaves are so stacked, one on top of the other, and are so secured to each other and to the support that each separate sheet may be easily removed from the stack as desired.
If it is desired, the stack of sheets may be secured upon the outside of the case and in this I instance, the sheets may be stapled together by the staple 44 which is also used to secure the cover portions and the sets of matches to each other. In this way, great economy can be effected.
While we have described the invention in great detail and with respect to the present preferred form thereof, it is not desired to be limited thereto since changes and modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention. The invention may be embodied in other specific forms without departing from the essential characteristics thereof. The present embodiments are therefore to be considered in all respects as illustrative and not restrictive, the scope of the invention being indicated by the appended claim rather than by the foregoing description, and all changes which come within the meaning and range of equivalency of the claim are therefore intended to be embraced therein.
What it is desired to claim and secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
A pocket kit of the class described comprising in combination, a. carrying member including a back cover part and a retaining part extending upwardly from the lower marginal edge thereof and in parallelism therewith and a front cover part extending from and hinged to the upper marginal edge thereof for swinging towards and away from a retaining position wherein it is substantially parallel with said back cover part and engageable with said retaining part, a body member including a supporting part and a plurality of matches extending upwardly therefrom and separable therefrom along a, tearing line which extends transversely of the body member between the supporting part and matches, said supporting part being secured between said back cover and retaining parts, certain 01' the innermost matches being spaced apart to provide a vertically-extending article-receiving recess therebetween which extends downwardly into the upper portion of said supporting part to provide a socket, and a removable article having its lower end portion seated in said socket and its upper end portion disposed in said recess and having its opposite sides in frictional engagement with the adjacent sides of said certain innermost matches and with the opposite sides and bottom of said socket, all adapted and arranged whereby the article is substantially concealed from view when said front cover part is in said retaining position.
