GRIPPING PAD FOR HANDLES Filed Jan. 30, 1941 Inbentor /%//meis7e;
A iiom ey Patented Feb. 24, 1942 UNITED STTES PATENT OFFICE GRIPPING PAD FOR HANDLES Roy Hoffmeister, Philadelphia, Pa.
Application January 30, 1941, Serial No. 376,705
(Cl. l6-110) 1 Claim.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in gripping pads for the handles of suit-cases, hand-bags and other articles and has for its primary object to provide a removable, yieldable pad adapted for conveniently attaching in position to the handle to provide a soft gripping member therefor, the pad being designed to prevent blisters being formed on the hand of a person gripping the handle, as well as to relieve strain to which the hand is subjected while gripping heavy objects, such as suit-cases and the like.
' A further object is to provide a yieldable pad member of this character which i of simple and practical construction, relatively inexpensive to manufacture, easy to install and remove in position on the handle and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction as more fullyhereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which Figure 1 is a fragmentary perspective view showing the pad in position for attaching to the handle, Figure 2 is a similar view showing the pad secured n the handle,-
Figure 3 is a plan view of the pad When detached from the handle, and
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 4-4 of Figure 2.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, wherein for the purpose of illustration I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of the device, the numeral 5 designates a rubber pad embodying side edges 6 of gradually reduced thickness, as shown to advantage in Figure 4 of the drawing and having notches 1 formed in each end thereof.
Secured to each of the side edges 6 is a zipper fastening tape 8, each having one part of the zipper fastener 9 carried thereby and adapted to secure the pad in a position on the handle Ill of a suit-case or other article H with the pad arranged in position so that the post portions I2 of the handle will be positioned in the notches l at the end portions of the pad in a manner as clearly illustrated in Figures 1 and 2 of the drawing.
A sponge rubber or similar resilient lining I3 is vulcanized or otherwise suitably secured to the inside of the pad 5 in a manner so that the lining will be positioned at the under side of the handle when the pad is secured in position with the zipper fastener 9 extendingalong the top of the handle. by receiving the posts 12 of the handle will enable the ends of the pad to engage the sides of the posts as shown in Figure 2 and thus prevent the pad from turning or twisting on the handle.
From the foregoing it will be apparent that the pad will provide a convenient comfortable hand grip for the handles l0 whereby to remove the discomfort usually occurring when gripping a hard unyielding handle member.
While I have shown the invention adapted for use upon a handle for a suit-case or other piece of luggage, it will be understood that the hand grips may also be easily and conveniently attached to other types of handles without necessitating any'changes or alterations in the construction thereof.
It is believed the details of construction, advantages and manner of use of the article will be readily understood from the foregoing without further detailed explanation.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is- A hand grip pad for handles comprising a flat yieldable pad cover adapted for folding along its medial line for enclosing the handle between the posts of the handle and with the free edges of the cover positioned on top of the handle, a fastening device at the free edges of the cover for securing the same in position on the handle, a pair of resilient lining members secured to the inner surface of the cover with one edge of each member postiioned in spaced parallel relation to each other at the fold line of the cover, said lining members being adapted to extend along the side of the handle and partly under the handle and notches at the end portions of the cover adapted for receiving the post of the handle, the ends of the cover at each side of the notches engaging opposite sides of the post to secure the pad in position against turning movement on the handle.
The notches l at each end of the pad
