UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE MAT Joseph F. Ptacek, Milwaukee, Wis. Application July 12, 1941, Serial No. 402,152

1 Claim.

This invention relates to improvements in mats, and more particularly to a novel mat of reinforced construction which lends itself well to machine production.

An object of the invention is to provide a device of the type which will have a network foundation of suitable material.

Another object of the invention is to provide a mat which may be manufactured by a machine process as against present methods of hand manfacture in products of the type.

Other and further objects of the invention will appear as the description proceeds, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which- Fig. 1 is a View in perspective of a mat embodying my invention.

Fig. 2 is a top plan View of a fragmentary portion of the mat showing a portion of the wire mesh foundation exposed.

Fig. 3 is a fragmentary sectional view of said mat.

Referring more particularly to the drawing, the numeral Il! refers to the device generally which in the example shown is rectangular in form and has a marginal binding II secured by thread or twine I2 to the mat proper.

As illustrated in Fig. 2, a wire mesh foundation I3 consists of intersecting interwoven wires secured at their outer ends to the related side wires by bending the terminals thereof as at I4.

In fabricating the mat, the wire foundation I3 is placed in horizontal position, and pluralities f yarn fibers I5 are disposed longitudinally of the mesh form thereabove. The yarn is then pushed downwardly through the mesh so as to pack it tightly therein. Obviously the transverse wires will spacedly retain the yarn, causing loops I6 to extend therebetween. The loops I6 are then cut off to leave a cut pile surface on the mat.

At each end of the mat I0, a half space will be left Void in the mesh, and a half portion of yarn I1 is supplied to iill the same, and the said yarn is extended and filled transversely of the foundation mesh I3.

It will be understood that the device is capable of many modifications in structure and design, without departing from the spirit of the invention, within the scope of the appended claim.

Having thus described the invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:

As an article of manufacture, a wire mesh foundation having uniformly square openings therein, lengths of yarn disposed about the wire members extending in one direction in the mesh, and yarn lengths disposed at right angles thereto to ll the half square openings left on the sides of said mesh, and a binding element entirely encircling said mesh and yarn secured by sewings over the outer marginal members of the mesh and under the contiguous members at right angles thereto.
