2 Claims. (CL 20G-56) metio is advanced by the relative rotation of two slotted members but such cosmetic holders of the prior art had, because of their design and construction, to be made entirely of metal or, in a,
few cases, partly of metal and partly of plastic material.
The present invention therefore relates to features of a cosmetic holder whereby all of the component parts thereof may be wholly made of plastic material.
These and other objects of the invention and the means for their attainment will be more apparent from' the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing illustrating one embodiment by which the invention may be realized and in which:
Figure 1 is a view `in perspective showing a cosmetic holder in the form of a lipstick or eyebrow pencil;
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view showing the cosmetic holder in closed position;
Figure 3 Iis an exploded view showing the component parts of the lipstick holder of this invention, partly in section and partly in elevation;
Figure 4 is an enlarged View showing the car- V` rier for the lipstick or eyebrow pencil; and
Figure 5 is a plan view of thecarrier of Figure 4.
Referring to the drawing in which similar parts are indicated by identical reference numerals, the preferred embodiment of my invention embodies a substantially two-piece construction comprising an inner sleeve and an outer sleeve cooperating therewith together with a separate cover member. The inner sleeve 1 is of tubular form and of constant diameter, the lower end of which is closed by a disc-like'bottom 8 providing a peripherall ange 9 extending outwardly beyond the cylindrical wall 1 and turned upwardly on its periphery as a wall 3|. The tubular portion of this inner sleeve is provided with a longitudinal slot II terminating above the bottom of the sleeve, as at I3. This member may be easily formed as a unitary member of plastic material as, for instance, by an injection process.
The carrier, as illustrated in Figure 4, comprises a cup-shaped member, the cylindrical wall |5 and perforated bottom |1 of which are formed of plastic material. cylindical wall of the carrier is formed a lug I9, preferably cylindrical and of a length to pass through the slot in the inner sleeve 1 and enter ahelioal groove 2| in an intermediate member 23 next to lbe described. This carrier is readily formed of plastic material in a simple manner, as will be understood.
The intermediate sleeve is formed at its lower end with a peripheral flange 25. The upper end of the intermediate sleeve is bent inwardly as a flange 21 defining an aperture 29 substantially equal to the aperture formed by the innerl sleeve 1 and so as to conceal the innersleeve and form a passage for the lipstick or eyebrow pencil 30 (Figure 2) during its protrusion and in protruded position, The cosmetic 30 is of a diameter less than the 'outer diameter` of the carrier to avoid contact with the inner sleeve 1. On its inner surface, the intermediate sleeve is-formed with a helical groove 2| commencing in the plane of the bottom surface of the sleeve and extending upwardly to a point proximate the open mouth 29 thereof. Again this member may be readily formed of plastic material as by aninjection process.
In assembly. the carrier l5 is inserted in the intermediate sleeve 23 with the lug or pin i9 in the groove 2| therein and the sleeve 23 is then telescoped over the inner sleeve 1 so that the lug I9 on the carrier I5 enters the groove inthe inner sleeve and the ange 25 on the intermediate sleeve 23 rests upon the iiange 9 on the Iinner sleeve 1.
The two flanges are readily secured together by the cylindrical wall 3| which is of greater height than .the height of the flange 25 cn the intermediate sleeve, and the plasticwall 3| of the inner sleeve'is readily turned inwardly, as at 35 (Figure 2) over the ange 25 on the intermediate sleeve 23 to irremovably retain the two sleeves in relatively xed position while permitting relative rotation therebetween.
'A removable cover is provided comprising a cylindrical portion 33 and an end closure portion 36- integral therewith which is conveniently formed with a flat inner surface 31 recessed at the center, as at 39to conform somewhat to the i. v
On the outer surface of the edge Il ofthe innersleeve 1. The removable cover being of plastic material, Y readily lends itself to orxmmentation. `As shown,
the peripheral surface of the cylindrical portion asians:
the foregoing'descnpuon or umso-mons in the drawing except as indicated inthe I appendedclaims.
of the removablecover is iluted, as at asis an-` annulsr areal on the upper end'thereof sur--v roundingadisc-like raised portion".
To retain'the lipstick or eyebrowpenciljn po-V sition in the carrien'tongues Il are, itdesired. provided which are `formed as dihedral angles with a sharp edge-sloping downwardly from the wall I! ofV the cup to the`inne'r sharp edge Si of the anchoring. prongs and-sloping downwardly and outwardly from theupperedge l! to the bottom il Voilthe cup-shaped carrier. Again the sides II of the prongs are angularly related and slope from the sharp. edge 51 outwardly from one another to thewall of the cup. 'I'he opposed edges Il of the anchoring prongs may conveniently be notched, the. notch having a horizontal upper surface 51 and an inclined inner surface so that a lipstick, for instance, pressed down into the. carrier will have portions thereof readily entering the notch to anchor the lipstick'against displacement. The prongs are readily formed integrally with the carrier in the one operation while the notch is readily formed by inserting a rotating cutting tool axially with the cup, as will be understood.
It will thusbe seen that a lipstick holder has been provided which is composed of a minimum number of parts, all of which are readily formed of plastic 'material in simple operations and which requires only a single operation to secure the component parts of a holder, as distinguished from the removable cover, into a non-separable unit. The lipstick` holder so constructed presents a graceful and pleasing appearance and is capable of ornamentation to provide an attractive product.
Various modicationswill occur to those skilled in the art in the particular plastic composition used and the method of forming the plastic and no limitation is intended by the phraseology of Whatisclaimedis:
LA twopiece cosmetic holder comprising a unitary, relatively thick-walled outer sleeve formed with an internal helical groove and a peripheral danse at its lower end, a thick-walled .longitudinally slotted, unitary inner sleeve mov- 'ably iitted within the outer sleeve. said inner sleeve having a bottom and a peripheral flange in the plane or its bottom and extending beyond the periphery of the lower end of the outer sleeve,
a rim portion of' the said bottom ange being turned over and lon the angefon. the outer sleeve to retain the said sleeves together in axially rotatable relation, and a carrier disposed within the -inner sleeve, said carrier having a peripheral lug, extendingthrough the slot in the inner sleeve'into the'helical groove 'of the outer Y sleeve. whereby manual rotation of the bottom'oi' the inner sleeve will eectrelative rotation of the respective sleeves with concomitant travel of the carrier. Y
2.'A two-piece cosmetic holder comprising a unitary, relatively thick-walled outer sleeve formed withran internal helical groove and a peripheral flange at its lower end, together with an inturned annular top flange, a thick-walled longitudinally slotted, unitary inner sleeve movably tted within the outer sleeve, said inner sleeve having a bottom and a peripheral i'lange in the plane of its bottom and extending beyond the periphery of the lower end of the outer sleeve, a rim portion of the said bottom flange being turned over and on the ilange on the outer sleeve to retain the said sleeves together in axially rotatable relation, and a carrier disposed within the inner sleeve, and substantially co-diametrical with the aperture of the said annular top flange, said carrier having a peripheral lug extending through the slot in the inner sleeve into the helical groove of the outer sleeve, whereby manual rotation of the lbottom'of the inner sleeve will effect relative rotation of the respective sleeves with concomitant travel of the carrier.
