Our invention relates to covers for mattresses, bed springs, and the like, and, more particularly, relates to a cover providing complete enclosure.

A mattress cover of the usual inexpensive type having an open end closed by a single flap fails to provide complete enclosure of a mattress or the like because there are unavoidable gaps at the corners or side edges of the flap, even when the mattress and coved are new and undistorted. When the mattress loses its initial rectangular shape, unsightly bulges protrude from these corners and the resulting tension eventually tears the detachable end of the flap from its buttons or other fastening. As a result, the cover loses in large part its attractive appearance and its effectiveness as an enclosure. Although this dofeet can be remedied by the use of separate or hinged box-type enclosures, such construction is cumbersome and impractically expensive.

The primary object of our invention is to provide an inexpensive mattress cover in which these defects are overcome.

Another object of our invention is to produce a completely enclosing mattress cover of simple and inexpensive construction which provides support tending to prevent distortion of the enclosed mattress.

A further object of our invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive mattress cover which effectively encloses the contents even after distortion is far advanced.

With these and other objects in View which will become apparent as the description proceeds, our invention comprises a fabric cover of rectangular form adapted to enclose a mattress or similar object, the cover being constructed such that the end into which the mattress is to be inserted has side extensions forming side flaps and a bottom extension forming an end flap adapted to overlap the end and to be secured to the top, and means detachably to secure the flaps in enclosing relation to the interior and to resist forces tending to distort the rectangular shape.

The invention, both as to details of construc tion and combinationof parts, will best be understood from the following description of a specific embodiment which we illustrate as an example, when read in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which:

Referring now to the drawing, we have shown in Fig. 1, an embodiment of our invention in which the mattress cover A is provided with a bottom flap B, and side flaps C, C connected by a cross-tie D.

The cover A is fabricated in the usual manner by sewing or stitching together pieces of fabric to form a box-like structure. The sides and rear end of the cover are formed from a strip ID of fabric which extends forwardly on each side to form the side flaps C, C. The strip i0 is sewed to a top piece l2 for the full length of the side and rear edges, and along the front edge for approximately one-third the length of the flaps C, C from the corners l4, M to points l5, H5. The flaps C, C are thus permanently secured for part of their length along their top edges, the ends and the bottom edge remaining free to permit ready insertion of the mattress.

The strip It) is sewed for the full length of the side and rear edges to a bottom piece l8 which extends forwardly to form the end flap B. Flap B is folded along a line 22 to form a front end section 29 and a top overlapping section 24. The free ends of flaps C, C are connected by the cross tie member D which is sewed to the right hand flap 26 and buttoned to the left hand flap 28, the member D being provided with an appropriate buttonhole to engage a button 3i! attached to the flap 28. The flaps C, C restrain the mattress from bulging out at the front corners, and the tie D acts to assist in preserving the desired rectangular configuration by constraining the flaps C, C from separating under lateral pressure of the enclosed mattress.

The flap B is fastened into closed position by means of a row of buttonholes 32, 32, extending laterally across the end of section 24, which engage a cooperating group of buttons 34, 35, attached to the top piece I2. To aid in maintaining the desired shape, the section 29 is provided with a centrally disposed buttonhole 36 adapted to engage a button 38 secured to the tie D. It should be realized that the flaps C, C and cross tie D act to resist any tendency of the enclosed mattress to spread out endwise and thus they relieve the pressure which might otherwise tend to develop excessive tension on the buttons 34, 34.

Although the mattress cover is described as having the separate parts I9, l2, and i8 sewed or stitched together, the seams may also be provided with binding tape in the customary manher. To provide additional stiffness at edges, this binding may be extended to include folded edges without seams such as edge 22 or the bottom front edge 4!]. Also, the points of attachment of the buttons or other fasteners may be reinforced by a thickness of fabric in the usual manner to prevent them being pulled out.

We have shown the flaps to be secured in position by means of buttons, but it is obvious that any suitable fastening means equivalent thereto may be used instead, such as tie backs or snap fasteners. Also the tie D may be buttoned, snapped or otherwise removably fastened to flap 26 in lieu of being sewed thereto as illustrated.

Though theinvention has been described in considerable detail, such description is intended as illustrative rather than limiting, as numerous embodiments will be apparent to those skilled in the art. Our invention, therefore, is not to be limited except insofar as is necessitated by the prior art or by the spirit of the appended claim.

We claim: In a fabric cover for mattresses and the like comprising a rectangular casing having top, bottom and side walls defining an end opening,

extensions of said side walls forming side flaps, said side flaps being folded over said end opening and having their upper edges stitched to said top wall from the fold inwardly for part of their length, a cross-tie member having one end fastened to one of said side flaps and having the other end detachably connected to the other side flap, whereby to hold said side flaps in folded position over the end opening, an extension of the bottom wall forming an end flap, said end flap being proportioned and arranged to overlap the end opening and the top Wall and to enclose the folded side flaps, fastening means located centrally of said tie member detachably to secure said tie member to the overlying end flap and means detachably to secure to the top wall the overlapping portion of the end flap.
