Manufacture of Pessaries from Celluloid and Analogous Plastic Material. No. 235,959. I Patented Dec.'28,1880.
N. PETERS, PHOTO-LITHOGRAFNER, WASHINGYON. D C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GUSTAV OTTO, OF JERSEY CITY, N. J., ASSIGNOR TO THE OELLULOID MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
MANUFACTURE OF PESSARIES FROM CELLULOlD AND ANALOGOUS PLASTIC MATERIAL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 235,959, dated December 28, 1880.
Application filed November 12, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GUSTAV OTTO, of Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in the Manufacture of Pessaries from Celluloid and Analogous Plastic Materials, of which the followiu g is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
[O The invention relates to improvements in pessaries, and especially to that class which are so formed that they may be bent to any shape, at pleasure. lessaries of this class are now made of wire coated with soft rubber,
which are open to objection by reason of the fact that after they have been used a short time they become exceedingly offensive on account of the absorption of secretions, which necessitates their being discarded. Another objection which has caused great inconvenience has been that the presence of sulphur in the rubberhas been a cause of irritation which it has been impossible to avoid or cure.
By means of my pessary I overcome all the objections to the pessaries now in use, and provide an instrument which is, I believe, a marked advance upon all heretofore known.
The essential novelty of my invention consists in employing flexible celluloid or other other materials, whereby I produce an instrument which has a highly-polished surface and is at the same time sufiiciently pliable, which may be applied without danger of pre- 3 5 judicially affecting the parts with which it comesin contact, and whichmay be bent withcompound of pyroxyline in lieu of rubber or out danger offracturing or impairing the surface. The instrument will be formed with a flexible core, preferably ot'copper wire, its exterior surface being highly polished to prevent friction.
In the accompanyingdrawings I have shown a longitudinal section, Fig. 1, and a plan view, Fig. 2, of instruments embodying my invention, in which A denotes the core composed of 5 copper wire or some other suitable material, and B the elastic celluloid. By preference, the instrumentwill be so constructed that thecore can move readily within its case of celluloid or other compound of pyroxyline, although it is not essential that it should. The method of construction is a matter of judgment which will depend upon circumstances, and which need not be set forth herein.
I do not limit myself to any mode of manufacturc; but
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A pessary composed wholly or in part of flexible celluloid or other compound of pyroxyline.
2. A pessary composed wholly or in part of celluloid or other compound of pyroxyline.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing improvement in manufactures of celluloid and 65 analogous plastic material, as above described,
I have hereunto set my hand this 12th day of November, 1880.
GUSTAV OTTO. Witnesses:
