L. M. ROUSE Get. w, 1944.

GARMENT Filed Feb. 17 f 1945 INVENTOR. [ILL/AN M. Pause ATTORNEY Patented Oct. 10, 1944 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE GARMENT Lillian M. Rouse, New York, N. Y., assignor to Gohn-Hall-Marx 00., New York, N. Y.

Application February 17, 1943, Serial No. 476,190

3 Claims.

This invention relates to garments for women and girls and more particularly to garments of the type usually characterized as slacks.

The primary object of the present invention is the provision of slacks of such construction that they are well adapted to be Worn by stout Women and girls, although it will be understood that the garments are suitable for thin or slender women or girls.

Another object of the invention is to provide a pair of slacks or similar garment of bifurcated construction having upper pleated back portions formed as continuations of the leg portions of the slacks and extending over the seat portion thereof so that the latter is substantially concealed by said pleated vportions and so that when the leg portions are in adjacent relation, the appearance of the back of the garment resembles that of a skirt, the construction of the garment as a whole being such that the front thereof has the appearance of conventional slacks.

A further object of the invention is generally to improve the construction of garments of the above described type.

The above and other objects, features and advantages Will be fully understood from the following description, reference being had to the accompanying illustrative drawing:

In the drawing:

Fig. 1 is a front view of a garment embodying the present invention;

Fig. 2 is a view of the back of said garment;

Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2;

Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2;

Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view on the line 55 of Fig. 2.

Referring to the drawing in detail, the garment l0 embodying the present invention comprises the leg portions l2 which are completely separate from each other from the lower ends thereof to the crotch portion l4 and which are united with each other at the front seam l6 and at the rear seam l8 which extend at the front and back of the garment, respectively, to the waist band 28. As here shown, said waist band is separable at one side of the garment as indicated at 22 at the top of the side placket 24 which may be opened and closed in any suitable way, for example, by a zipper or slide operated fastener.

The upper back portion of the garment is provided with pleats 26 and 28. The folded edge portion 30 of each of said pleats are stitched together by the seam 32 which extends for the full length of the leg portions I2. Said pleats are separable from each other to a point located above crotch l4 and below the waist band 20 as indicated at 34 and are secured to each other above said point by the seam 36 formed as a continuation of the crotch seam l8. It will be noted that when the leg portions l2 are near each other the pleated portions 26 and 28 substantially conceal the seat part of the garment, as illustrated in Figs. 2 and 4, and further it will be observed that said pleated portions for-med as continuations of the leg parts of the garment provide ample room in the seat part of the garment.

Each leg portion I2 is preferably formed in two parts which are secured to each other at the inner and outer seams 38 and 40, respectively, the inner seams extending to the crotch l4 and the outer seams extending to the bottom of the placket 24 at one side of the garment and to the waist band 20 at the other side of the garment. Also it will be noted that the front parts of the leg portions l2 are creased and stitched as indicated at 42. Further it will be noted that while the front stitched creases 42 are located centrally of the front parts of the leg portions l2, the creased and stitched edges 32 of the back parts of said leg portions are disposed substantially in confronting relation as continuations of the confronting folded edge portions 38 of the pleats 26 and 28, as illustrated in Figs. 2, 4 and 5.

Thus, it is seen that the garment constructed as herein shown or described is well adapted to accomplish the purposes of the present invention. It will be understood, however, that certain changes in the details of construction and in the form or shape of the garment may be made without departing from the underlying idea of this invention. Accordingly I do not wish to be limited to the specific construction herein shown or described except to the extent which may be required by the scope of the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. A garment of the type described comprising leg portions separate from each other from the bottom of the garment to the crotch thereof, the upper parts of said le ortions being provided with pleats at the back of the garment, said pleats extending upwardly from said leg portions, respectively, to a point above the crotch of the garment, each of said pleats and the companion leg portion having a folded edge portion which .is stitched along a line extending downwardly from said point to a point below the crotch of the garment at the back of the garment.

2. A garment of the type described comprising leg portions separate from each other from the bottom of the garment to the crotch thereof, the upper parts of said leg portions being provided with pleats at the back of the garment, said pleats extending upwardly from said leg portions, respectively, to a point above the crotch of the garment, each of said pleats and the companion leg portion having a folded edge portion which is stitched along a line extending downwardly from said point to a point below the crotch of the garment at the back of the garment, said stitched folded edges of the two pleats and leg portions being disposed sub-stantially in confronting edge to edge relation at the back of the garment.

3. A garment of the type described comprising leg portions separate from each other from the bottom of the garment to the crotch thereof, the upper parts of said leg portions being provided with pleats at the back of the garment, said pleats extending upwardly from said leg portions, respectively, to a point above the crotch of the garment, said pleated portions being stitched together along a central line extending from said point to the waist band of the garportions being disposed substantially incon-' fronting edge to edge relation at the back of the garment.
