NTTED STATES PATENT J OHN H. ALLEN, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
BED-PLATE FOR ENGINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 236,661, dated January 18, 1881.
Application filed October 9, 1880.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN H. ALLEN, of Brooklyn, State of New York, have invented certain nen Improvements in Bed-Plates for Steam-Engines, of which the following is a specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the arrangement and construction of the bed-plate, more particularly for high-speed engines, in making the same throughout its whole length ofa regular and even rectangular shape, with a straight top surface, inclosin g nearly in height the whole of the crank or crank-wheel, whereby great solidity and strength is obtained, and the scattering of the oil or other lubricating fluid is confined within the bed-plate.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure I represents a top view of my improved bedplate. Fig. II is aside elevation of the same. Fig. III is a section at line a a, Fig. I. Fig. IV is a cross-section near the center of shaft at line Z) I), Fig. I.
Similar letters represent similar parts in all the figures.
A represents the bed-plate, which, in its general shape, is made rectangular in section, ofeven dimension throughout its whole length, similar to a long rectangular box, with the pillow-block B cast in at one side. At that end of the bed-plate where the steam-cylinder (J is attached the inside of the bed-plate is made cylindrical to act as a guide for a cylindrical cross-head, E. The top of the bed-plate is carried above this cylindrical part D and continued in the same plane, perfectly straight (No model l throughout the whole length, and is extended around the crank or crank-wheel'F. From the end of the cylindrical part 1) toward the pillow-block the top of the frame or bed-plate is made open enough to permit the free movement of the connectingrod and crank or crank-wheel. This construction of the cylindrical cross-head guide D in the inside of the bed-plate, and the straight top of the bedplate above the guide I), and extending at the same height throughout the Whole length and nearly inclosing the crank or crank-wheel F, will prevent nearly all scattering of the lubricating-oil from the moving parts of the engine, and confine the same inside of the bedplate, at the same time giving a strong and solid bed-plate, capable of resisting effectually any strain, particularly requisite for high-speed engines.
\Vhat lclaini as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
An engine bed-plate of rectangular section throughout its Whole length, having a straight top surface above the cross-head guide eX- tending at the same horizontal plane around the crank or crank-Wheel, in combination with an internal cross-head guide, l), consisting of a regular cylinder, all constructed and arranged substantially in the manner and for the purpose described.
JOHN H. ALLEN.
