T yrseck, Montville, Conn.,` assignor to Robertson Paper Box Company, Inc., Montville, conm). a corporation of Connecticut Application July 2, 1942, SerialNo. 449,464
(ci. 229-44) Q 3 Claims. This invention relates to boxes of thatsf class used for cigarettes, cigars', candy and the like, in
which a top'cover. tilts back to expose the contents, the object being to provide such a box of -ca'rdboard that is simple, cheap, convenient of manufacture and strong, and in which the tilting top will be held in position to close the` box by friction between the cover and box walls.
For a full understanding of the invention, a detailed description of the box will now be given in connection with the accompanying drawing' showing the box in a preferred form and the features forming the invention will then be pointed I out in the claims. r In the drawing:
box blank in a preferred form;
Figure 2 is a perspective view showing the in- -ner box formed beforethe closing of the outer panels with the cover;
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the complete box closed;
' Figure 4 is e smmar view of thebox with the' top open;
Figure 5 is a longitudinal central section of the l box open;
Figure 6 vis a cross section gon the line 6 of Flgure 5;
Referring to the drawing, the blank vshown in Figure l .consistsof the three .wide panels I I, I2, I3, forming the sides of the inner' box and narrow panels I4,- I5, connecting these wide panels to form the edge panels of the inner box. The outer box panels forming an extension of the blank -consist of wide panels I6, I1 and the narrow panels I8, I9, each of which carries top and bottom lendlclosing flaps of the same width `respectively I I, as shown of panel I3, thus forming three thicknesses when 1501; and bottom aps 20, 2|, 22, 2f to close the ends of the box, the panel I1 and the end iiaps being secured to complete the box by'pasting, with theupperscored portion of panels I6, i1, Il, Il andthe-top flaps 20, 2i, 22, 23 forming the tip back.- over, as shownin Figures 3 to 5. The panel in Figure 2, liesover the.inner side panel H is closed over panel Il, and increasing the strength of the box. This panel Il, or part thereof, maybe omitted, however, if this threel the cover and the stiff walls of the inner com-1 plete box. The box of this blank is especially well adapted to machine manufacture. WhatIclaimisz l. A box consisting of an inner box-comprising four panels-and an -outer box comprisinga panel overlying one of the innerbox panels and of such size as to 'provide/for folding panels extending therefrom, and panels extending from said overlying panel and folded about the inner box and `'said overlying panel, the panels of the outer box having end flaps foldingto close the ends of the outer box, three adjacent walls of the outer box being cut ati one end toform a tilt back cover vhinged on a panel on the fourth side of the box inline with said cuts to close over the ends of the walls of the inner box, all said panels forming a single blank with the panels in line and scored as the Wide and narrow panels, the flaps carried l.
by panels I6, I1 being 2l, 2i and-the narrow panel ilaps being 22,23.
.Panels I6, I8 and I9 are scored deeply on the line i so as to be broken on this line for tilting the cover to open the box and the panel I 'I is partially or less deeply scored on the line 2to provide a hinge on which the cover tilts back to open the box. As shown in .the drawing and as preferred, a tab 3 in panelLII is preferably cut so that it may be bent over and secured tothe cover, but this is not essential to the invention.
as shown m Figre 2, the box has been partiauy formed by apsli to I8, the panels I6, I8 being 'folded abouttheinner box, and the panels I1 and for folding the blank over and over longitudinally from one .end of the blank toform the inner ,and outeboxes and cover. l
2. A box consisting of an inner box comprising four alternating wide and narrow panels, and an outer* box comprising a wide panel overlying one of the wide innery box panels and of such size as te provide for folding panels extending therefrom,
,and alternating wide and narrow panels extend' ing from said overlying panel and folded about' the inner box and said overlying panel, 4the panels I9 'and the end closing vpanels unfolded, the box f being completed by closing over the panels I1, I9
' onto the innerbox panels and closing down there.
the ends of the outer box, one of ving end flaps folding to close i the two narrow walls of theouter ox being cut at one end to form a tilt'back cover hinged on a panel on the fourth wide side of the box in line with said cuts to close over the ends of the wallsv of the inner box, al1 said panels forming asingleblank with the panels in line and scoredxfor folds ing the blank over and over longitudinally from one end of the blank to form the inner and outer boxes and cover.
3. A box blank comprising four panels arranged in line and scored for folding the blank to form an inner box, and an outer box having a panel scored to fold to overlie one of the said four panels and of such size as to permit for'iolding panels extending therefrom, and panels extending from said overlying panel and lscored to told over the inner box and said overlying panel, flanges on the l0 and cover.
ends of the outer box panels folding to close the l ends o! the outer box, three adjacent walls of the outer box being cut at one end to iorm a tilt back cover hinged on a panel on the fourth side of the box in line with said cuts to close over` the ends of the walls of the inner box, all said panels on the blank being in line and arranged to fold the panels successively longitudinally of the blank from one end to form the inner andA outer boxes WALTER J.
