Another embodiment of the invention i`s illus trated-inv Fig. 7 in which the lower end of the shell section I has secured to its outer surface a sleeve 49 the lower end of which hasan inwith outwardly oiset spaced sections 53 adapted' to interlock with similarly spaced inwardly projecting ribs 54 on the upper end of thel wall 6- of the drive ring 2. The coupling 52 has an inwardly and downwardly extending portion 55 complementary to the inclined upper surface of the drive'ring and is provided with an inner vertical wall 56 the upper end of which has an inverted U-shaped ange 51 which slidably ts between the inner surface of the sleeve 49 and the periphery of the complementary U-shaped nange of the sleeve 49. A suitable packing 58 is housed in the space between the interengaging U-shaped flanges of the sleeve and the coupling ring and a suitable gasket 59 is enclosed between the complementary inclined surfaces 'of the cou'- pling ring and drive ring, thereby insuring exclusion of seepage into the interior of the pile.-
'Another embodiment of the invention is illus,- trated in Fig. 8. In this construction the lower portion of theshell section I has xedly secured to it a cylindrical sleeve 66 provided with a plurality of inwardly offset ribs 6I which may bel of annular or spiral form andv provided with-suitable recesses to receive packing rings 62 or a spiral packing. The lower end of the sleeve 60 is provided with a horizontal outwardly extending ange 63.
The coupling ring comprises a cylindrical sec,- tion 64 which is rotatably and slidably mounted upon the sleeve 60 and provided with an oiset cylindrical portion 65Vwhich fits the periphery of the flange 63. The lower end of the coupling ring is provided with spaced inwardly offsetl sections 66 complementary to similar outwardly olset sections 6'I of a vertical wall 68 of the drive ring 69 of another shell section, thereby forming a bayonet joint connection of the character heretofore described. In this construction the wall 68 is spaced rfrom the periphery of the drive ringand the drive ring provided with a concentric outer peripheral wall 76, portions of which are adapted to engage the outer face of the coupling ring when the bayonet joint connection is in inter- 'Another modied, construction embodying the invention is illustrated in Fig. 9v in which the shell section I has fitting within andY fixedly secured to it a downwardly extending cylindrical sleeve 12, rthe lower end of which isv provided with wardly extending walls or ribs v'II having inclinedv upper faces adapted to engage complementary 4odset sections 'I8 of a bayonet joint coupling member upon the upperend of a verticalwall 19 extending upwardly from the drive ring a short distance from the periphery thereof. Thel drive ring 2 is provided with an outer or peripheral wall 88 of Aless height providing therebetween a seat ,for a gasket 8| and the lower edge of the coupling ring is so constructed as rrnly to clamp the gasket upon its seat onthe drive ring when the bayonet joint members are moved into locking posi-- tion.
Another embodiment of the invention is illustrated in Fig. 10 in whichv the lower end of the shell section I is provided with an outer cylindrical band 82 forming in eiect a flange at the lower end of the shell section. A coupling ring ,'83 of general cylindrical form is rotatably and slidably mounted upon the cylindrical band 82'1 and has secured to the inner face of its upper end a similar cylindrical band 84 which slidably and rotatl ably engages the outer cylindrical surface of the l shell section I. The coupling ring83 is provided locked engagement. 'I'he lower portion of the 'coupling-ring 65' is adapted to seat upon a suitable shoulder 'II between the adjacent walls 68 and I0 of the drive ring. c
In the construction illustrated in Fig. 8 the drive ring at the upper end of each section is shown as extending horizontally outwardly from the shell section to the upper end of which vit is xedly secured and it will'be understood ,that drive rings for theseveral pile sections may be so constructed as to havehorizontal outwardly extending ground-engaging surfacesy or inclined ground-engaging surfaces in this construction or in any of the otherconstructions illustrated herein, the form of the drive ring in any case being optional so long as positively interengaging joint members are provided for the drive ring and coupling ring and the coupling ring is slidably and rotatably mounted upon the lower end of the next superimposed shell section. l

In this construction the drive ring 2 has an outer vertical peripheral wall 88 which is provided with an inwardly offset spiral section or rib 89 complementary to the outwradly offset section or rib 85 of the coupling ring. The upper end of the peripheral wall 88 of the drive ring has an inwardly extending flange 90 the under surface of which-is spirally inclined to engage the upper surface of the outwardly offset member or rib and together with the inclined surface SI of the spiral section or rib llprovides interengaging screw thread connection between the coupling and the upwardly extending wall of the drive ring. A suitablepacking 92 is interposed between the cylindrical portion of the coupling ring and the shell section i and is held in place in any suitable manner as by a ring 93 which is secured to the coupling-ring.
In the manufacture of thefshell sections each of the drive rings is formed by usual shaping machines to provide the downwardly extendingV lower end of each shell section for the purposeof providing a watertight joint wherethe pile isvv to be. sunkin water-saturated soil and similar gaskets are also shown in some of the figures member or `members of a bayonet joint' connection, a cylindrical sleeve fitting within and fixedly secured to the lower end ofl said shell provided below said end with a cylindrical `inwardly offset portion the lower end of which has an Outwardly extending inverted U-shaped fiange, a coupling ring having a complementary inverted U-shaped portionrotatably andslidably engaging and fitting the-surface of the inwardly offset portion of said sleeve, and the flange thereof, to provide a slip joint therebetween, a packing filling the space between the overlapping walls of said coupling ring and flange, and complementary bayonet-joint members on said coupling ring and flange adapted when the bayonet joint members of the coupling ring and those of the next lower section ofthe driving ring are interlockedto secure said sections rmlytogether subject to relative longitudinal movement between thecoupling ring and the pile section uponk which it is mounted. 8. As an articlefof manufacture a tubular pile shell section having iixedly securedtoits upper end a rigid drive ring extending over and beyond the circumference thereof and provided with a member of an interlocking joint connectiom'acoupling ring slidably and rotatably mounted on the lower end portion of saidsection provided .amuse f i yshell section having xedly securedto its upper end a rigid drive ringextending over and beyond the circumference thereof and having an outer upwardly extending wall provided with an inclined coupling member and having a seat for a gasket adjacent to the base of said wall, a sleeve iixedlysecured to the lower end portion of said Y shell section having at its lowerendv a laterally vextending flange, a coupling ring', slidably and rotatably fitting said sleeve abovesaid flange land having an inclined coupling member complementary to that of said drive ring adapted upon interlocking engagement with that of a like drive ring to clamp the gasket firmly upon its seatv and the drive ring thereon.

As an article of manufacture a tubular pile shellsection having xedly secured to its upper end a rigid drive ring extending over and beyond 'the circumference thereof and having at oradjacent its periphery an upwardly extending wall provided with members of a bayonet joint connection, a sleeve fixedl-yY secured to thelower end of said shell section having a cylindrical inwardly oset portion provided at its lower end with an outwardly extending flange, a couplingy ring slidably and rotatably mounted upon andtightly tting'said inwardly offset portion having at its lower end members of a bayonet joint connection complementary to those of the drive ring, and a packing between the coupling ring and the offset portion of the sleeve upon which it is mounted. 13. As an article of manufacture a tubular pile shell section having flxedly secured to its upper end a rigiddrive ring extending over and beyond the circumference thereof and having a peripheral upwardly extending wall provided with inwardly offset inclined coupling members and having a seat for a gasket within and adjacent 40 to the base of said wall, a sleeve tting and xwith a member of an interlocking joint connec-- i tion complementary, to that of said drive ring adapted upon rotative movement of said coupling ring fixedly to engage alike locking member of the drive lring of'anoth'er .pi1e`section, and means for limiting the .sliding movement of the coupling ring.

As an article of manufacture a tubular pile shell section having fixedly secured to its upperv end a rigid drive ring extending over and be-` yond the circumference thereof having a gasketsupporting shoulder and provided with an inclined member of an interlocking joint connec-v tion, a coupling ring slidably and rotatably mounted on the lower end portion of said section provided with an inclined member ofan interlocking joint .connection complementary to that of said drive ring vadapted upon rotative movement of said coupling ring xedly to engage a like locking member of the drive ring of another pile section and to clamp said gasket firmly upon the shoulder thereof, and means for limiting the -sliding movement of the 1coupling ring`A v n 11; As an articlegofmanufacture a tubular pile vedly secured to the lower endfof said shell section having at its lowerend a laterally and upwardly extending U-shaped flange, a coupling ring having a complementary inverted U-shaped iiange rotatably and slidably engaging said sleeve and the flange thereof to provide a slip joint therebetween and havingoutwardly offset inclined coupling members complementary to those of said drive ring. As anarticle of manufacture a tubular pile shell section having iixedly secured to its upper end a rigid drive ring extending over and yond the circumference thereof and having a low outer upwardly extending circumferential wall and an inner Iupwardly extending wall of greater height provided with outwardly offset inclined coupling members of an inclined bayonet joint and having between said walls a gasketreceiving channel, a sleevefitting and xedly secured to the lower end of said shell section having at its lower end an outwardly extending flange, a coupling ring mounted on said sleeve with a packing therebetween and having anoutwardly offset portion fitting the offset porticnof the inner wall of said drive ring andprovided with inwardly extending bayonet joint members complementary to those of said wall vand having at its lower end an extension adapted to engage the gasket in the channel of said ring.
