Balance Swing.

7 No. 239,970. Pate nted"A'p ril 12,188l.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 239,970, dated April 12, 1.881.

Application filed December 9, 1880.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FREDRICK MEDART, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Balanceswings; and 1 do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, reference being had to the ac coinpanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, forming a part of this specification.

This invention relates to certain improvements in balai'ice-swings used as an exercising apparatus for children; and this invention consists in constructing" such apparatus with a central tubular iron post attached to a castiron base, the swing-frame being pivoted on a. cross-arm that is made vertically adjustable on y the supporting-post by means of a pin and series of adjusting-holes in said post.

The drawing is a perspective view illustrating my invention.

A is the swing-frame, pivoted at its center to the cross-arm B, which has a central sleeve portion, I), surrounding the post 0, and made vertically adjustable on the same by means of a pin, 0, engaging'in one of a series of adjusting-holes, c','as shown. The frai'ne A is properly tied together and provided with handles a at each end, as shown.

The post 0 is fixedly secured in the central socket of the base D in any suitable manner, and in my preferred construction this post is formed of gas-pipe; yet in some cases wood may be substituted therefor without depart-- ing from the spirit of my invention.

The cast-iron supporting-base D is formed, as

shown, with radial bracing win gs or feet d, the

outer ends of which are faced with a facing, d, of leather, 850., to prevent slipping of the apparatus upon the floor when in use.

(No model.)

In moving the apparatus from point to point the swing-frame A will be let down to the base, and the pin 0 inserted over the sleeve through the hole 0, when the apparatus can be transported bythc handles a a to any desired point.

My improved apparatus is light, durable, and convenient, and by its means the adjust ment of the swingiramc to any desired elevation is easily and readily accomplished.

Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A balance-swing exercising apparatus, when provided with a single central supporting-post, G, as described, and for the purpose set forth.

2. A base, D, for balance-swings, formed of cast-iron, and provided with radial bracing feet or wings d, as described, and for the purpose set forth.

3. The base I) of a balance-swing exercising apparatus, having its feet (I provided with a facing, 01, of leather, &c., as described, and for the purpose set forth.

4. A balance-swing exercising apparatus formed with a central supporting-post, O, having adjusting-holes c and pin 0, base D, crossarms 13, having a. sleeve portion, 1), and a swingframe, A, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

5. A balance-swing exercising apparatus, when provided with a. hole, 0 through its central supporting-post, O, as described, and for the purpose set forth.

Signed at St. Louis,in the State of Missouri, this 2d day of December, 1880.
