The present invention relates to a novelty shoe of a so-called squawking form, that is, a shoe which is designed and constructed to produce a noise calculated to appeal to juvenile and other wearers.

In carrying out the principles of the invention, I have perfected a simple and economical funprovoking shoe which, while adapted to be worn by children, is equally well adaptable for use by grown-ups, for instance,- at appropriate celebrations, masquerade parties, and for similar occasions.

Briefly, the shoe comprises a main bottom constituting the tread, and a false bottom to which the foot of the wearer is strapped, the two bottoms being arranged in parallelism and held in such relation by spring-suspension means. The bottoms are marginally surrounded by an enclosing jacket forming a trapping and amplifying chamber, there being a noise-producing device located in said chamber. Consequently, as the foot is alternately raised and lowered, during walking, a squawking noise is produced to the delight and humor of the wearer.

Other objects, features and advantages will become more readily apparent from the following description and the accompanying illustrative drawing.

Figure 1 is a view partly in section and partly in elevation of the complete shoe constructed in accordance with the present invention and showing the manner in which it is worn.

Figure 2 is a top plan view with a portion broken away to expose the structure on the interior.

Figure 3 is an enlarged fragmentary detail section.

Figure 4 is a perspective view of one of the springs.

Referring now to the drawing by distinguishing reference numerals, it will be seen that the main bottom, which is of wood or appropriate material and of the shape illustrated, is denoted by the numeral 5. Above this, and parallel thereto, is a correspondingly shaped wooden part 5 which may be differentiated as an elevated false bottom. The false bottom is provided with a heel plate I at its rear. Suitable straps 8 and 9 are provided to fasten the shoe on the foot, or shoe roper ID, of the wearer. The parts 5 and 6 are connected in parallelism by longitudinally bowed, flat-type springs II, these being fastened securely to the intermediate portion of the false bottom, as at H. are provided with slots M to accommodate the headed retaining screws or similar fasteners l5. Thus, the springs are arranged in spaced parallelism and secured to the underside of the false bottom and have their free ends slidable in contact with the upper side of the main bottom 5. This provides the desired coordination and relative movability of parts 5 and 6. The part 6 is provided, in its underside, with a groove or channel Hi to accommodate a noise-making device such as a tubular whistle [1. This is suitably secured in place and has its outer end open, as at I 8. The inner end is obliquely cut and provided with a vibratory reed l 9.

The main and auxiliary bottoms 5 and 6 are provided with an enclosing fabric jacket 20. This is of appropriate material and secured on the marginal portion of the respective bottoms 5 and 6. That is to say, the bottoms are provided with marginal grooves and the free edges of the enclosin jacket are wedged into the grooves, as indicated at 2| (see Figure 3) by retaining keys or wedges 22,

By securing the enclosing jacket 20 to the marginal portions of the parts 5 and 6, a chamber is thus provided, this housing the springs and also the noise-producing whistle. What is more, this jacket functions as a sort of bellows which, in conjunction with the whistle, accomplishes the desired Squawk-walk action.

It is thought that persons skilled in the art to which the invention relates will be able to obtain a clear understanding of the invention after considering the description in connection with the drawing. Therefore, a more lengthy description is regarded as unnecessary.

Minor changes in the shape, size and arrangement of details'coming within the field of invention claimed may be resorted to in actual practice, if desired.


A novelty noise-making shoe of the class described comprisin main and auxiliary spaced parallel bottoms, a flexible fabric jacket completely surrounding the perimeter portions of said bottoms and having air-tight connection with the marginal edges thereof, a tubular reedequipped whistle mounted on one of the bottoms and having its outer end opening through the jacket and open to the atmosphere, the reed being on the inner end, and a pair of longitudinally bowed springs havin their intermediate portions rigidly secured to one bottom and their opposite end portions slotted and slidably secured to the remaining bottom.
