This invention relates to certain novel improvements in blademounting means for a multiple blade bread slicing machine." More specifically the invention hasreference and relates-to means for mounting the slicing knives-ofsuch machine upon reciprocatory frames .in a manner such that the knife "mounting'means "may be expeditiouslys removed for purposes of varying ;the space between the knives. In :this aspect'ofxthe invention the primary object is to provide a structure which will ,be highly efficientinuse, economical in manufacture, and simple in 'construction:

The present invention is especially adaptable to slicing frames of a bread slicing machine such as that shown in my copending application, Serial.
No. 598,457, filed June 9, 1945, and constitutes an improvement over the bread slicing machine shown in United States Patent No. 2,092,276.
Other objects will appear hereinafter:
The invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings showing the preferred form of construction, and in which:
Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of a frame and its mounting saddle, showing the invention associated therewith;
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional detail view through oppositely disposed frames and their saddles;
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary perspective view of a bracket bar embodied in the invention.
The drawings illustrate the preferred form of construction of my invention by which the several objects of the invention are accomplished, and in this connection and II indicate frame members. These frame members are slidably associated with saddles I2 and I3 in a manner fully shown and described in my copending application. These saddles are reciprocated vertically in opposite directions with respect to each other through the medium of reciprocatory rods l4 and I5, the reciprocation being affected in a manner substantially similar to that described in the aforesaid copending application and the frames-guided insuch movement by rods i5':car-- rie'd by mounting brackets i 4" secured to the wall l3. ofthe housing I2 of the machine. a
Each frame comprises a, plurality of elongated knives l5 spaced --substantially with *respect to each other; with the "knives of one framedisposed between the knives of theother frame and reciprocating in opposite directions With irespect to each other. :To accomplish I this-and: other-objects.- of the invention, I mount upon the top rail I! of each frame a mounting plate I8. This mounting plate I 8 along one longitudinal edge I9 is provided with an elongated groove 20 which receives the marginal edge portion 2| of the top flange 22 of the top rail ll, the said marginal edge portion being provided with a shoulder 23 which serves to limit the projection of the marginal edge into the groove 20.
Extending upwardly from this mounting plate I8 is a stud shaft 24 threaded at its outer extremity as at 25 to receive a pair of nut elements 26.
The mounting plate l8 at its edge portion opposite the marginal edge portion I9, is angled upwardly as at 2'! and at predetermined points there are provided spaced slots 28 through which project the end portions 29 of latch bars 30. The inner end portions of these latch bars 30 are each bifurcated as at 3| to receive the stud shafts 24. Disposed between suitable washers 32 arranged between the nut elements 26 and the latch bars 30, are spring members 33 which act upon the latch bars to pivot them in an anticlockwise direction.
The end portions of each of the latch bars each are provided with a notch 35 adapted to receive the hanger pin 36 carried at the upper end portion 39 of each of the knives l G.
Secured to the side wall 4!} of each frame It and l l, by means of a nut receiving bolt 41, is a bracket 42, the horizontal portion of which is notched as at 43 to receive the anchor pin 45 carried at the lower end of each of the knives l6.
By adjusting the nut elements 26, the springs 33 may be compressed and the tension thereof increased to increase the leverage of the latch bars 30 upon the pins 36 and thus maintain the knives I6 in substantially taut condition, preventing their side-swaying or warping during the slicing operation. Should it be found that a lesser or greater space is desired between the knives l6, all the knives l6 may be removed from their respective mountings, after which the mounting plate I8 and the bracket 42 are removed and a similar mounting plate and bracket substituted therefor, but with the slots in the angled end portions 21 spaced nearer or farther apart so as to result in having knives mounted upon the frame spaced at different distances from those shown in the drawing.
From the foregoing description, it is obvious that in the event of replacement of a knife, the knives may be individually removed, this being accomplished by merely releasing the tension upon the spring 33, which allows the latch bar 30 to pivot freely for disconnection of the pin of the knife from the notch 35 and of the pin of such knife from the bracket 42.
Upon the foregoing premises the knives may be either bodily or severally removed from mounted position upon the frames.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. 1, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such varia tions and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is: 7
Means for connecting corresponding upper end portions of a plurality of spaced knives to the upper rail of the frame of a slicing machine comprising a mounting bar fixed to the upper rail and having an inclined upwardly extending portion provided with a plurality of open slots spaced equally apart with respect to each other, a plurality of levers removably iulcrumed on said bar in said slots, and having corresponding end portions bifurcated and opposite end portions each provided with a notch adapted to removably receive the hanger pin carried by a slicing knife, spaced mounting studs carried by the mounting plate and projecting through the bifurcated portions of the levers to stabilize said levers, and spring means carried by themounting studs and engageable with adjacent portions of said levers to pivot said levers upon said bar in a direction opposite to the pivotal movement of said levers by action of the slicing knives.
