ware Corporation, Bri ration of Connecticut to The Pioneer Hard- Y dgeport, Conn., a corpo- Application June 14, 194s, serial No. 676,791 e claims. (C1. 292-348) The present invention relates to improvements in latch constructions and relates more particularly to the type of latch construction in which two latch-units are employed, each having means inter-threading with similar means onthe other latch-unit, wherebythe two said latch-units may be clamped against the respective opposite sides of a door or other closure.
One of the main objects of the present invention is to provide a superior latch construction of the character referred to and having simple, reliable, effective and inconspicuous means whereby one latch-unit may be conveniently turned with respect to the other to 'eiect the clamping of both latch-units in place.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a superior latch construction of the character referred to and having one of the latch-units provided with a wrench-receiving portion and with a cover-member movable into and out of positions wherein it alternately conceals and exposes the said wrench-receiving portion.
With the above and other objects in view,'as will appear to those skilled in the art from the present disclosure, this invention includes all features in the said disclosure which are :novelV over the prior art, and not 'claimed by me in my copending application Serial-No. 665,300 led April 26, 1946.
In the accompanying drawings, in which certain modes of carrying out the present invention are shown for illustrative purposes:
Fig. 1 is a view of a. latch construction embodying the present invention and shown as mounted adjacent the edge of -a door, "the showing being mainly in plan with the knob, cover-plate, clamping-plate anda portion of oneof the couplingsleeves being in central horizontal section;
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional viewV taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1 but omitting the door in order to View the inner face of the clamping-plate and associated features, the wrench-receiving notch of the cover-plate being shown in registry with the similar notch of the clamping-plate;
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 but showing the cover-plate as turned to conceal the wrenchreceiving notch in the clamping-plate;
Fig, 4 is a broken detail sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3 but on a larger scale;
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the cover-plate or rose detached and viewing the same mainly from its inner face;
Fig. 6 is a similar View 0f the assembly comprising the clamping-plate and its couplingsleeve; and Y Fig. 7 is-a perspective view of a Spanner-Wrench suitable for use in turning the clamping-plate and the cover-plate or rose.
The particular embodiment, chosen for illustration in the accompanying drawings forpurposes of making clear a preferred form of thepresent invention includes a casing I Il adapted to have its inner face seated against the ladjacent face of a door or other closure '.II and provided centrally with an externally-threaded rigidcoupling-sleeve I2. The said coupling-sleeve projects in .tq the adjacent end of a clearance-passage I3 formfedin the door I I, as is indicated in Figgl. In its `outer periphery, the clamping-plate I5 isformed Vwith a wrench-receiving notch I9,Vfor`1purposes as will hereinafter appear. Y Y 'Ihe cup-shaped cover-'plate orrose I6 before referred to has its annular flange 20 extending in an axial direction over the outer periphery 'of 'the clamping-plate I5 and providedwith a clearancenotch 20a. At its free edge, the ilange 2liV is formed with four (more or less) retaining-fingers 2| which are bent over against ythe'inner face of the clamping-plate I5 to retain the latter and the cover-plate in assembled relationship, while permitting relative rotation t'o'take place Vwhen'desired, between the said clamping-plate I5 and the cover-plate I6. Y
The cover-plate I6, in addition to its flange 20, also includes a face-portion 22 covering the outer face of the clamping-plate l5 and'liaving its center apertured and pressedoutwardly .to provide an .offset-portion. 23. Rotatably connected to the olfset-portion 23 just referred to,` isa knob or other suitable operating-member 2Q, asis Vshown inlFig. 1.
In order to connect the'knob 24 or itsequivalent with the cover-plate or roseV I 6 in such manner as to permit relative'rotation. the said knob 24'is 3 provided with a relatively-slender neck 25. The said neck extends through the aperture in the center of the offset-portion 23 and is burrecl or riveted over as at 26 against the inner face of a washer 21. The neck 25 also extends through the washer 2-`I whilethellatter bears against the inner face of the oisetfportion 23 and turns thereon when the knob 24 is rotated.
The knob 24 or other suitable o-perating-rneln-- A e ber is, in a manner usual in the art, provided with an axial passage 28 of square or other suitable non-circular form in cross section.A Thesaid passage 28 receives the adjacentend oa spindle-.29.'
