SHOE SOLE PROTECTOR Filed Feb. 2, 1948 2 sheets-sheet 2 Patented Apr. 5, 1949 MNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
This invention resides in shoe polishing equipment and more particularly a shoe sole protector.
One of the objects of this invention resides in the provision of a shoe sole protector adapted to prevent shoe polish from being smeared on the edges of shoe soles when polishing the uppers thereof.
Another object of this invention resides in the provision of a shoe sole protector adapted to be removably attached to shoe soles of various sizes.
A further object of this invention resides in the particular construction of the telescopic sections of the protector and means for retaining them on the soles of shoes.
With these and other objects in view, this invention resides in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of elements to be hereinafter more particularly set forth in the specication, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claim and, although this disclosure depicts my present conception of the invention, the right is reserved to resort to such departures therefrom as come within the scope of the claim.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this application:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a shoe showing the protector disposed thereon.
Fig. 2 is a cross sectional view taken on line 2--2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a bottom view oi the protector per se.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a modified form of the protector.
Fig. 6 is a perspective View of another modified form of the protector.
In the present illustration of this invention the numeral 5 desigates, in general, a shoe sole protector constructed of suitable pliable material such as plastic fabric, paper, rubber and the like and consists of a front section 6 having an upstanding side flange 'l and a rear section 8 having an upstanding side flange 9. Said side ange 'I and 8 of the protector are adapted to cover the edges of a shoe sole to prevent polish from being smeared thereon while polishing the uppers thereof.
The aforesaid front and rear sections have their inner ends telescopically connected and retained in adjustable sliding relation by a retractile coil spring 9 connected to the front and rear ends thereof by longitudinally extending wires l0 or the like, however, it is within the purview of this invention to substitute other well known retractile means therefor just so the functions are attained thereby.
In order to yieldingly retain that portion of the protector opposed to opposite sides of the instep portion of the shoe sole, a retractile coil spring H or other similar means is connected at its opposite ends to laterally extending wires l2 having their outer ends secured to opposite side edges of the front section adjacent its inner end.
In the modined form of this invention, as shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings, the protector is formed of rubber or other suitable pliable material into substantially trough shape configuration and consists of a bottom l5 having a. continuous upstanding shoe sole engaging flange I6 formed around its edges. That portion of the flange l5 opposed to opposite edges of the instep portion of the shoe sole is reinforced by strips l1 formed of metal or other suitable material between which is disposed a retractile coil spring I8 having its opposite ends connected to the strips by strands of wire i9 or the like so as to draw the center of the protector inwardly to conform to the shape of the shoe sole and thereby removably secure the same thereon.
In the modified form of the protector as shown in Fig. 6 of the drawings, the numeral 20 indicates a flexible rubber sole portion formed with rubber flanges 2i having their upper edges turned inwardly to cover the outwardly extending edges of shoe soles.
With this invention fully described, it is manifest that a shoe sole protector is provided which will readily prevent smearing of the edges of shoe soles while polishing the upper portion of shoes and, through the simple construction thereof, the cost of manufacture of the same will be sufficiently cheap to meet the demands of the public.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
A protector for the edges of shoe soles comprising telescopic front and rear sections, upstanding side flanges formed on said sections, a retractile coil spring connected at its opposite ends to the front and rear ends of the sections, and a retractile coil spring extending laterally of said section with its opposite ends connected to opposite sides of the inner end of the front section.
