6 Claims. (Cl. 20G-48) l This invention relates to an improved package. It is an object of the invention to provide an improved package which is suitable for use with plastic and semi-plastic materials particularly plastic food products such as liver paste, lard, butter or the like. Plastic and semi-plastic products of this character present packaging diculties in that the uld content thereof is absorbed or partially absorbed by the package ma to provide an improved package particularly suitable for use with plastic and semi-plastic materials which presents an attractive appearance and can be used as a commercial package and which can also be used for storing the contents and dispensing it therefrom.

My improved package is so designed that the contents will not stick or adhere to the interior of the package and can be readily removed from the package and reinserted therein.

My package comprises a container Il in which is disposed a removable slide or drawer Il serving to hold the contents I! of the package so that it may be readily withdrawn from and reinserted into the package and a strip or sheet of material I3 forprotecting the contents from the inner surface of the container and for facilitating the opening of the package. i

The container may be of any desired shape but is preferably rectangular as shown and may be made from fibre, cardboard or other suitable material. My invention is not limited to the particular form of the container but in the present instance the container is provided with upper and lower panels I4 and i5, side walls II and one end wall I1. The opposite end of the container is open as shown and may be provided with side aps I8 to help in closing and sealing the package. Similarly aps i9 (one of which is shown in Fig. 5) may be provided at the closed end of the container.

The container may be formed from a single blank of material folded as shown so that the bottom panel I5 consists of two overlapping layers adhesively adhered together and the end I1 consists of two overlapping layers similarly adhered together. y

'The slide or` drawer Il may also be formed from a singleblank of material as shown in Fig. 6. The slide consists of a bottom panel 2l having an integral end wall 2| and integral side walls 22 which are divided into small aps or sections by means ofthe parallel slots 23 which serve as guides in dispensing the contents. The end wall and the side walls are folded up in the manner shown so as to form a slide or drawer in which the contents can be inserted and which in turn can be inserted inside the container and will snugly llt therein so it can have sliding move- Vment with respect thereto. Connected to the forward end of the slide is an integral extension of the panel 20 which is folded in the manner shown so as to provide a closure 2l for the open end of the container Il. a nap 25 which is inserted between the top panel I4 and the contents, and a protruding flap 26 serving as a handle whereby the package may be readily opened and the slide removed from the container.

'I'he strip or sheet i3 serves as additional protection for the contents of the package and also for the inner surface of the container. It is preferably made from a film of material which is substantially impervious to moisture and which is unaected by fluids ordinarily present in plastic or vsemi-plastic food products such as liver paste, butter, lard and the like. For this purpose a plastic strip such as moisture proof cellophane, Pliofllm or vinyl resin is very satisfactory; The strip is long enough tobe folded over the inner end oi the contents as indicated most clearly in Figs. 4 and 5V and thence to extend over'the upper surface of the contents and tobe folded downwardly over the front surface thereof inside the flaps i8 as shown most clearly in Figs. 2 and 5. Thereafter, it is folded upwardly outside the flaps I8 along the inner surface of the closure 24 and extends' inwardly around the tab 25 and thence projects outwardly over the upper surface of iiap 2l as shown in Fig. 5.

In using my improved package it is filled in any desired manner. In this connection the package may be used for holding many different types of materials. However, it is particularly suited for use with plastic and semi-plastic materials such as plastic food products including liver paste, various types of chopped and minced meats, lard, butter or the like. The contents may be preformed or precut and placed upon the slide Il and thereafter the sides of the slide are folded up, the plastic strip I3 placed over the top and the assembly is inserted inside the container I0. The plastic strip is then folded down over the-front surface of the contents, the u flaps I8 are folded inwardly over the plastic strip, and the projecting end of the plastic strip and the closure 24 are then folded upwardly over the front opening of the container and the tab 25 with the plastic strip extending therearound is inserted between the panel il of the container and the contents with the tab 2G and the end of the strip projecting outwardly. Instead of lling the package in this manner it may, of course, be lled by means of a stuffing horn.

My new package provides a convenient commercial package and also a container for storing and dispensing the contents. When it is desired to use all or a portion of the contents the tab 26 and the protruding end of the plastic strip are grasped between the fingers and pulled in the manner indicated in Fig. 2 with the result that the forward end of the container is opened and the flaps i8 are bent outwardly by the force exerted by the plastic strip. Further pulling of the ap 26 and of the plastic film will result in partial withdrawal of the slide and contents from the container as shown in Fig. 3 or in complete withdrawal as shown in Fig. 4. Where only a small portion of the contents are to be used partial withdrawal, as shown in Fig-3, is sufficient.

The contents of the package can be used by simply folding the plastic strip backwardly soas to expose the contents and a measured or predetermined amount of the contents may be dispensed by severing the contents transversely across the lines defined by the parallel slots 23. when the desired amount of the contents have been dispensed the plastic strip is again folded down over the contents and the slide is reinserted in the container and the end of the package closed in the manner previously described.

It will thus be seen that the side and the plastic strip serve to prevent contact between the inside of the container and the contents of the package. This prevents the contents from adhering to the inside of' the container thereby avoiding interference with the opening and closing of the package and also prevents absorption by the container of the fluids in the contents.

In Pig. I have illustrated a slightly modified form of slide in which the side walls 32 are formed in one piece but are provided with scored or weakened lines I3 whereby they may be readily divided into separate sections. The side walls I2 are also provided with integral extensions Il which are folded inwardly forming flanges overlapping the contents of the package. The scored or weakened lines extending upwardly into the flange portions 3l and the flange portions project outwardly in tongue-like fashion between the weakened lines. In addition, in this form of slide, tabs I5 for the open end of the package may be formed integrally with the side walls 32.

The modified slide shown in Fig. 7 is used in the same manner as the first form of slide and may be used for packaging the same types of material.` However. I lhave found that it is particularly suitable for use with butter, lard, and similar preparations. When the slide shown in Fig. 7 has been removed or partially removed from the container and when it is desired to dispense a portion of the contents the side walls 32 may be severed along one of the scored or weakened lines 33 and the contents in turn are severed along the imaginary line dened by one pair of lines 33.

It will thus be seen that I have provided an improved package which is particularly suitable for use with plastic or semi-plastic material, which presents an attractive appearance and can be used as a commercial package and which may also be used for storing and dispensing the contents thereof. Modications may be made in the illustrated embodiment of my invention without departing from the invention as set forth in the accompanying claims.

I claim:

1. A package comprising a container having an opening therein, a slide for holding the contents of the package removably disposed in said container and having a closure flap and handle formed with a portion closing said opening in the container and with another portion protruding therefrom whereby the package can be opened and the slide withdrawn from the container, said slide having an open top, and a protecting strip of flexible material disposed over and completely covering the open top of the slide to separate the contents from the inner surface of the container and thence extending along the inner surface of the closure nap and projecting outwardly with the protruding portion of the closure nap and handle.

2. A package comprising a container having an opening therein, a slide for holding the contents of the package removably disposed in said container and having an extension flap folded so that a portion extends across the opening in the container and serves as a closure therefor, another portion projects inside the container and frictionally holds the closure portion in closed position and a further portion projects outwardly serving as a handle cooperable to "open the package and withdraw the slide therefrom, said slide having an open top and a protecting strip of exible material disposed over and completely covering the open top of the slide and along the inner surface of the closure to separate the contents of the package from the inside of the container and having a portion projecting inside the container and thence outwardly with the portion of the extension flap which serves as a handle 76 and removable through said opening, said slide having a base portion open at the top disposed in said container on one side of the opening and an extension flap extending across and serving as a closure for said opening, and a protecting strip of ilexible sheet material extending over the open top of the slide and across the opening in the container in one direction inside said side naps and in the opposite direction outside the side aps and over the inner surface of the closure flap whereby the closure and exible sheet material can be pulled to expose the opening in the container and to open the said side flaps.

A packagecornprising a container having an opening therein and formed with a pair of side ,flaps extending partway across the opening from opposite sides thereof, a slide for holding the contents of the package disposed in said container and removable through said opening, said slide having a base portion open at the top disposed in said container on one side of the opening and an extension flap extending across and serving as a closure for said opening, the extension flap having a relatively short folded tab projecting into the container on the opposite side of the opening from the base portion and frictionally holding the closure in position said tab being folded upon itself and having its end portion projecting outwardly from the container and serving as a handle and a protecting strip of exible sheet material extending over the open top of the slide and across the opening in the container in one direction inside said side flaps and in the opposite direction outside the side aps and over the inner surface of the :losure said strip also extending into and out of the container with the folded tab whereby the tab and strip can be pulled to rst opening the closure and the side aps and thereafter to withdraw the slide from the container.

5. A package comprising a container having an opening therein and formed with a pair of side flaps extending partway across the opening from opposite sides thereof, a slide for holding the contents of the package disposed in said container and removable through said opening, said slide hav'ing a. base portion holding the contents and being open at the top and being disposed in said container on one side of the opening and having an extension nap extending across said opening at right angles to the side flaps and serving as a closure for said opening and a protecting strip Number of flexible sheet material extending across the opening in the container parallel to said extension ap and in -contact with the contents and inside said side flaps whereby the closure flap and flexible sheet material can be pulled outwardly to expose the opening in the container and to open the said side flaps.

6. A package comprising a container having an opening therein and formed with a pair of side flaps extending partway across the opening from opposite sides thereof, a slide for holding the contents of the package disposed in said container and removable through said opening, said slide having a base portion holding the contents and being open at the top and being disposed in said container on one side of the opening and having an extension ap extending across said opening at right angles to the side flaps and serving as a closure for said opening, the extension flap having a relatively short folded tab projecting into the container on the opposite side oi the opening from the base portion and frictionally holding the closure in position, said tab being folded upon itself and having its end portion projecting outwardly4 from the container and serving as a handle, and a protecting strip of flexible sheet material extending over the contents at the open top of the slide and also across the opening in the container in contact with the contents and inside said side flaps said trip also having a portion extending into and out of the container with the folded tab whereby the tab and strip can be pulled to first open the closure and the side flaps and thereafter to withdraw the slide from the container.
