Claims.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in toy machine guns and more particularly to an operating mechanism for feeding and firing percussion caps carried by a tape.
An important object of the present invention is to provide an operating mechanism for toy machine guns embodying a frame on which a roll of tape is supported together with feed means for feeding the tape in the path of a hammer for exploding the caps carried by the tape, all of such parts being constructed and arranged as a unitary structure to be housed in a toy machine gun.
A further object is to provide an operating mechanism of this character of simple and practical construction, which is efiicient and reliable in operation, relatively inexpensive to manufacture and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of the operating mechanism;
Figure 2 is a top plan view;
Figure 3 is a vertical sectional View taken on a line 3--3 of Figure 1;
Figure 4 is a transverse sectional view of the tape guide taken on a line 4-4 of Figure 1;
Figure 5 is a transverse sectional view showing the hammer for firing the caps and taken on a, line 55 of Figure 3;
Figure 6 is a fragmentary sectional view taken on a line 6-5 of Figure 3;
Figure '7 is an enlarged perspective view of the feed roller and cam carried at one end thereof for actuating the hammer;
Figure 8 is an enlarged fragmentary perspective view of the hammer, and;
Figure 9 is an end elevational view of the assembled operating mechanism.
Referring now to the drawings in detail wherein for the purpose of illustration I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral 5 designates an inverted substantially U- shaped frame including a relatively short leg 6 and a relatively long leg I. Bearing arms 8 project laterally from each of the legs and in which a shaft 9 is journalled, one end of the shaft being provided with a crank handle II].
A feed drum or wheel II is suitably secured to the shaft 9 adjacent its other end and'also suitably secured to the shaft at one end of the feed drum II isv a cam constructed of a plurality of radially extending cam arms I2. The intermediate portion of the feed drum I I is formed with circumferentially spaced lugs or teeth I3.
A stationary shaft I4 projects inwardly from the lower portion of the long arm. I for supporting a roll of percussion caps I5 and comprising a tape IE on which the caps I! are carried at longitudinally spaced intervals.
The free end of the tape I6 extends upwardly through a channel-shaped guide I8, the upper portion of the guide being curved around the outer periphery of the drum II as shown at I9 and is suitably secured to one edge of the upper portion of the frame 5. The side edges of the guide are formed with inwardly projecting flanges 20 to slidably receive the edges of the tape and to provide a longitudinally extending slot between the flanges to accommodate the movement of the teeth or lugs I3 therein which engage central apertures 2| spaced longitudinally in the tape I6 to thus feed the tape through the guide I8 and over the drum II.
After leaving the drum II and the upper end of the guide I9 the tape I6 with the caps I! on the upper surface thereof pass under the top of the frame 5 which serve as an anvil againist which the caps I! are struck by a hammer 22 carried at the free end of a resilient arm 23 and which is secured to the upper portion of the frame 5 with a spacing block 24 between the frame and the resilient arm 23.
The free end of the arm 23 projects into the path of the cam arms I2 during rotation of the drum I I whereby to periodically flex and release the arm 23 and thus cause the hammer 22 to strike the tape and explode the caps I! as the same passes under the frame 5.
The upper portion I9 of the guide I8 feeds the tape in a straight path for proper engagement of the opening 2| therein by the teeth I3 and in proper position for firing the caps by the hammer In view of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings it is believed that a clear understanding of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.
It is to be understood, however, that even though there is herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention the same is susceptible to certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described and the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. A toy machine gun operating mechanism comprising a U-shaped frame, a hammer including a spring arm secured to one end of said frame and in position to strike against. the irame, a shaft including'iamraiilk haniiIefiDuDnaIed inthe frame below said hammer, a feed drum carried on the shaft and feeding a tape of explosive caps-in the path of the hammer, means on the drum to engage and feed the caps into thei -piith offlihe hammer and means on the shaft adjacent the drum engaging and actuating -.the-h'ammerntoz:
45A; to'y machinei uni operating'mretihanisni shaft including a crank handle journaled in the frame below said hammer, a feed drum carried on the shaft and feeding a tape 'of explosive caps in the path of the hammer, teeth on said drum 5 engaging the caps and carrying them forward between said hammer and frame and cam arms secured on said shaft adjacent said drum to en gage said hammer and cause it to strike said ex- "'1 p'les'ive caps.
10 5. The combination of claim 4 wherein said frame includes a longer leg adjacent the hammer,
" and a stationary shaft extending inwardly and ssuppcntinga' roll of explosive caps thereon.
