Application July 23, 1947, Serial4No.763,043
This invention relatesV to undergarments for women, and more particularly, to a garment section adapted to be readily secured to or removed from undergarments.
Objects and advantages of the invention will appear from the description below and from the accompanying drawings.
The drawings illustrate certain practical embodiments of the invention by way of example; it will be understood that the invention may embody other forms within the scope and purview of my invention as set forth in the appended claims.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a pad support for use in connection with the garment section embodying the invention,
Figure 2 is a perspective View of the flexible garment closure sheet embodying the invention,
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Figure 1,
Figure 4 is a transverse sectional view taken on line 4-4 of Figure 2,
Figure 5 is a fragmentary perspective view of the lower portion of a garment to which the garment section of the invention may be removably secured,
Figure 6 is a similar view of the lower portion of a garment to which the garment section of the invention is stitched or otherwise secured, and
Figure 'I is a fragmentary View taken on line 'I-'I of Figure 6, with parts separated for the purpose of illustration.
The garment section of my invention comprises a flexible garment closure sheet Ill, which may be also termed a base sheet and which closes the lower portion of a garment I5 by being sewed or otherwise secured thereto, as at IB in Figure 6, or by being removably secured to the lower portion of garment I5 by fastener units I'I, II' (Figures 2 and 5) or by similar expedient; secondly, the garment section comprises a pad support sheet I8 which may be removably secured to the base sheet I0, as by complementary fastener units I4, I4 (Figures 1 and 2).
As shown in the drawings, illustrating certain practical embodiments of the invention, the flexible garment closure or base sheet I is preferably made of open mesh or like material which will readily flex and closes the lower end of the undergarment (I or I5). The sheet I0 is provided with longitudinally reenforced edges I I and transversely reenforced edges I2 marginally, so as to be, preferably, continuously reenforced marzclaima (c1. 12s- 283) ginally. Strips I3 of material are sewed or other- 55 wise secured to the sheet I0 at the corners thereof, fastener units I4 being secured directly to the sheet and/or the strips I3 (see Figure 4) The pad support I8 is flexible but is preferably made of a heavier material than the sheet I0 and is also preferably moisture-proof. It has longitudinally and transversely reenforced marginal edges (I9, 20). One or more flexible bands 2l, 2 I are secured to the pad support I8 at the transverse ends thereof. The bands 2I, 2l are secured at their ends to the pad support sheet I8 so that the medial portions are free, while the end portions of the bands are sewed or otherwise rigidly secured as at 22, 22' to the corners of the support I8. As will be evident from the showings of Figs. l and 3, the length of each band 2|, 2| is less than the distance between the opposite side edges I9, I9 of pad support I8, thus providing a space between the top surface of the sheet and the undersurface of each of said bands.
Fastener units 24 are secured to the medial portions 23, 23' of the bands 2I, 2l for engagement with complementary fastener units 24 on hygiene pad member 26.
From the foregoing it will be noted that the base sheet I0 may be removably secured to the lower portion of the undergarment as shown in Figures 2 and 5, or may be sewed or otherwise secured thereto as indicated at I6, Figure 6, and serves to close said lower portion of the undergarment. The pad support sheet I8 is removably secured to the base sheet Ill by fastener units I4, I4 or the like on sheets ID, I8 and the hygiene member 26 is flexibly and removably supported medially of the bands 2|, 2| on the support I8 and thereby held on the support I8 in a manner which provides a maximum of flexibility and support and avoids discomfort to the wearer. It will be noted that fastener units 24 on each band at the unattached medial portions thereof engage the complementary fastener means 24 on the top surface of the hygiene pad 26 near opposite ends of said pad to secure said pad to the medial portions of the flexible bands with the ends of the pad within the space between the top surface of the sheet I8 and the undersurface of said bands. Hence, the hygiene pad is flexibly suspended from the bands and is free to partake of substantial sidewise and endwise movement with respect to the support sheet I8.
I am aware of other expedients proposed to attain the objectives of the instant invention, exemplifled in patents issued in this art. None of the prior devices show a structure embodying the novel structural features of the device of my other, each of said bands having its opposite ends secured to opposite side edges of said sheet with the portions between said ends unattached to said sheet, the length of each band being I'ess than the distance between said opposite sidev edges of said sheet to which the ends of each band are attached, to provide a space between the top sui'-y face of the sheet and the undersurface of each of said bands; and fastener meansv oneachband at'the unattached, medial portion thereof engageable with complementary fastener means on the top surface of a hygiene pad member near opposite ends thereof to secure said member to the medial portions of said bands with the ends of the pad member Within the spaces between the top surface of said sheet and the undersurface of said bands, said bands flexibly suspending said pad member to permit substantial movement of the same with respect to said support sheet.
2. A substantially rectangular pad support sheet as dened' in claim 1 wherein vsaid sheet is provided with fastener means engage'able with complementary fastener means on said undergarment to secure said sheet to said undergarment.
