This invention relates to improvements in overall garments for workmen and more especially to overallsrfor mechanics Whose workY isperformed to a large extent while in a kneeling position.

In garments of the type referred to, it is important that paddingv at the knee parts be provided for the comfort of the workman.A An imm portant consideration valso is that the structure of the leg portions be such asto withstand the severe verti-cal strains to which theyare subjected 'and also the extreme wear at the knee portions.

An object' of the invention is to provide animproved construction of overall garment in which the pockets to hold padsfor the knee portions are more advantageously located at the inner side thereof and which at thesametime providesV for convenient access theretofor insertion or removal of the pads.

Another object of thev invention is to provide for the location of the kneepad Dockets at the inner side of the leg portions with openings in the outer side of the leg portions adjacent the knees for access to the padpocketswithout having objectionable loose open portionsl adjacent the knee portions when the garment isinvuse.

A further object of the invention is toprovide an improved overall garment of the character referred to with simple, efficient reinforcements for the leg portions and whereby aserviceablesatisfactory and inexpensive construction is. aorded.

An important novel featurel of the invention resides in the special construction of pad pocket provided and inthe particular connectionof the same at the inner sideoll the l'eg portions, together with, the provision oiA an opening. yin the outer side of each of the leg portions through which the pads maybe inserted into the pad pockets and removedl therefrom.

Another important novelcharacteristic ofthe invention lies in the combination of the particular construction of pad pocket andthe connection of the same at thev upper part thereof yfor limited swinging movement laterally. and also this together with the openings'in the. -outerside ofthe leg portions anda Zipper fastener for rthe latter. |This particular construction provides for lateral adjustment of the pocket and pad by the wearer of the garment when kneeling. It also provides for the location of the knee pad pockets at the inner side oi the leg portions and ready access thereto either through the zipper fastened openings in the outer -side of the leg portions or by reaching downwardly fromV the innerside of the waist should the zipper fasteners gete'out of re-- pai-r.-

Another novel characteristic of the-invention resides in the provision of a reinforcingstrip for each leg portion disposed. over'the side -seam thereof and extending fromv the bottom of `the leg portion to substantially the 1in-e of the knee, and tapering from its'ends inwardly to a point centrally thereof, the strip loeingv secured by stitching at its side marginal' portions to the leg portion at either side of the sideseam.

Still another novel feature of the invention lies in the provision of, fastener means on either side of the front of the waist portionat-theY-innel' side thereof forl attaching `an undergarment thereto to support the same.

The invention, with other objects andadvantages thereof, and the particular construction, combination and arrangement of parts compris ing the saine, will be understoodiromthe following detailed description when considered in connection with the accompanying drawing forming part hereof land illustrating one embodiment yof the invention.

` thereof, the trans e l2 of elongated, general rectangular shape are provided, one for each leg portion. These members, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing, are each of a length to extend from near the Waist to a point below the knees, and of a width to reach completely across the front of the leg portion, said members being secured to the respective leg portion l by seams i3 and I4 along their longitudinal upper marginal edge portions. Each of the members I2 are shown with one of the upper corners cut away to provide pocket opening l5, the bottoms of the pockets being defined by transverse lines of stitching i8.

In accordance with the present invention, each leg portion i is provided with a pocket il at the inner side thereof adjacent the knee adapted to hold a pad i8 to protect the knees. Each of the pockets ll has an opening i9 at one side facing toward the outer side of the leg portion. The pockets are preferably constructed from a blank of elongated, general rectangular form folded longitudinally upon itself on a line centrally of its ends. The blank has a pair of spaced attaching tab portions 2Q extending from one side marginal portion thereof, and tapering portions 2i extending from its other side marginal edge portion, the spacing of the tab portions 2E and the tapering portions 2i being such that when the blank is folded, the tab portions are disposed face-to-face, one upon the other, and the tapering portions 2l are similarly matched up with each other. After the blank has been folded, the two plys of material formed by the fold are connected by stitching along the top and bottom marginal edges thereof, and the connected tab portions 2U are secured to the leg portion 'i adjacent the knee portions by stitching 22. The leg portions 'l are each provided at the outer side thereof with an opening 23 through which a pad l2 can be introduced into or removed from the pocket il'. Associated with each of the openings 23 is a zipper or slide fastener 24 to close the same so that when the garment is in use there will be no objectionable loose open portions adjacent the knee portions.

The connection of the pocket ll at the upper l part thereof through the tab portions 29 to the leg portions is simple and has important advantages as the pocket is supported so that it is free for limited swinging or pivotal movement from one side to the other. This provides for lateral adjustment of the pocket and pad beneath the knee by the wearer of the garment when kneeling. It also provides for easily reaching the openings of the pockets from the inner side of the waist portion should the zipper or slide fasteners 24 get out of repair.

A reinforcing' strip 25 cured to each of th f suitable fabric is seportions 'i exteriorly thereof over the side l Z9. Each of these re inf-orcing strips extends from the bottom of the leg portion to a point substantially in the region of the knee. Each strip E5, as shown in Figs. l and 2 of the drawings, tapers from its opposite ends inwardly tc a point centrally thereof and is secured to the leg "tion by stitching 3G along its opposite side mai inal edge portions at either side of the seam 2t and at its end portions. Each leg portion also has a reinforcing strip 3l on the exterior thereof extending transversely from one of the longitudinal reinforcing strips 25 around the leg portion to about midway the back rsely extending reinforcing strips being secured along' their marginal portions to the leg portions by stitching. The longitudinally extending strips 25 and the transverse 4 strips 3l provide simple and efficient reinforcing and seam protecting means for the leg portions at points where the garment is subjected to ntense wear and are instrumental in providing a durable, satisfactory overall garment.

Means is provided on the waist band portion at either side and at the interior thereof for attaching an undergarment to the waist band to support the same when the overall garment is worn Without the usual underpants in warm weather. The means for this purpose is shown in the drawing as comprising button 26 and a button hole 27. In Fig. 6 of the drawings the button 26 is shown engaged with a button hole in an undergarment 28.

By the particular construction hereinbefore set forth an overall garment of simple, inexpensive construction is provided that will be durable and satisfactory in use. The construction provides for the advantageous location of the padding for the knees at the inside of the leg portions and at the same time, the pad pockets are readily accessible for the introduction or removal of the knee pads. The reinforcing means for the leg portions is simple, can be easily applied and serves to strengthen the leg portions at points where they are subjected to the greatest wear.

What I claim is:

1. An overall garment having leg portions each provided with a pocket at the inner side thereof at the knee adapted to hold a pad to protect the knees, said pocket having an opening extending along one side edge thereof facing toward the outer side of the leg portion, and each leg portion having a vertically extending opening therein at its outer side adjacent the knee through which a pad may be inserted into said pocket.

An overall garment having leg portions each provided with a pocket at the inner side thereof at the knee adapted to hold a pad to protect the knees, said pocket having an opening extending along one side edge thereof facing toward the outer side of the leg portion, each leg portion also having a vertically extending opening therein at its outer side adjacent the knee through which a pad may be inserted into said pocket, and a zipper fastener for said opening.

An overall garment having leg portions each provided with a pocket at the inner side thereof at the knee adapted to hold a pad to protect the knees, said pocket being connected at the upper part thereof to the front of the leg portion for limited swinging movement and having an opening extending along one side edge thereof facing toward the outer side of the leg portion, and each leg portion having a vertically extending opening therein at its outer side adjacent the knee through which a pad may be inserted into said pocket.

An overall garment having leg portions each provided with a pocket at the inner side thereof at the knee adapted to hold a pad to protect the knees, said pocket being provided with an attaching tab portion at its upper marginal edge portion secured by stitching to the front of the leg portion, and said pocket having an opening extending along one side edge thereof facing toward the outer side of the leg portion, and each leg portion having a vertically extending opening therein at its outer side adjacent the knee through which a pad may -be inserted into said pocket.

An overall garment having leg portions each provided with a pocket at the inner side thereof at the knee adapted to hold a pad to protect the knees, said pocket having an opening along one side edge thereof facing toward the outer side of the leg portion, said pocket -being formed from a piece of material of elongated general rectangular shape folded upon itself centrally of its ends, the two plies formed by the fold being stitched together along their upper and lower marginal edges, and said pocket being connected at the upper part thereof by stitching to the front of the leg portion for limited swinging movement.

An overall garment having leg portions each provided with a pocket at the inner side thereof at the knee adapted to hold a pad to protect the knees, said pocket having an opening along one side edge thereof facing toward the outer side of the leg portion, said pocket being formed from a blank of general rectangular shape folded upon itself centrally of its ends, said blank having a pair of attaching tab portions extending from one side marginal edge portion thereof, said tabs being so spaced from each other that when the blank is folded, the tabs will be disposed face-toface one upon the other, the two plies of the blank formed by the fold being stitched together along the upper and lower marginal edge portions thereof, the attaching tab portions being connected yby stitching along their marginal.' edge portions, and the connected tab portions being secured by stitching to the front of the leg portion, and each leg portion having a verticaliy extending opening therein at its outer side adjacent the knee through which a pad may be v inserted into said Pocket.

7. An overall garment having leg portions, one of said leg portions being provided with a pocket at the inner side thereof at the knee adapted to hold a pad to protect the knee, said pocket having an opening extending along one side edge thereof facing toward the outer side of the leg portion, and said leg portion having a vertically extending opening therein at its outer side adjacent the knee through which a pad may be inserted into said pocket.
