Generically this invention relates to costume jewelry, but more particularly it is directed to a novelty pin or the like.
The principal object of this invention is the provision of a pin of this character including an indicia bearing element which may be suc-cessively brought into and out of view.
A further object of this invention is the provision of a novelty pin constructed in a manner such that the arm element bearing predetermined indicia, such for instance, as Navy, Army, or other name designation, is operable to visually expose the indicia carried by said element and to withdraw the same from View, as desired.
A still further object of this invention is the provision of a novelty pin, including a spring controlled normally concealed indicia bearing element, and means in connection with said element normally operable to project said indicia into View, and upon release of said manually operable means, to automatically withdraw said indicia from View.
With these and other objects in View, which will become apparent as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the construction, com bination, and arrangement of parts, hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which like characters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several gures, of which:

In the illustrated embodiment characterizing this invention there is shown an article of novelty jewelry such as a pin, brooch, or the like, in the present instance, being in the form of a heart-shaped pin or brooch A, comprising a front casing member I adapted at its free edge to fric tionally engage over the edge of the complemental back portion B as will directly more fully appear.
The front casing portion or member l is adapted to have mounted or journaled therein vertically spaced from its apex a pin 2, on the outer end of which is suitably mounted an operating handle or lever 3, formed with a spacer It, said lever in the present instance, being in the form of a question-mark, and mounted on said pin and suitably secured thereto and within said casing 2 is an enlarged spacer or bushing member 5. Mounted on said bushing 5 is a coil spring 6, having one end, as at l, anchored by a lug 8, soldered or otherwise suitably secured to the inner surface of'casing I, and the other end 9 engageable with the: undersurface of a slightly bent or arcuate arm Iii mounted on pin 2 and in seating engagement with bushing 5, said arm being suitably secured to said pin.
The casing I is formed with an elongated opening or slot II through which arm IQ is movable into exposed and concealed positions and its upward movement in concealing direction is limited by the lug I2 soldered or otherwise suitably secured to the inner surface of casing I, and the downward movement of said arm is limited by the lower edge I3 of slot II to position the exposed portion I4 of said arm in a horizontal position as shown in Fig. 4, said portion I4 adapted to bear any desired indicia I5.
The portion B comprises a flat complemental casing portion or member I 6 adapted to frictionally engage within casing I and which completes the formation of the pin A. In order to attach the pin A to an article of clothing, a pin and catch mechanism I'I is attached in any well known manner to the rear surface of casing portion I6.
The operation of the pin device would appear to be clear from the above description, but it might be well to further state that normally the portion I4 of arm I0 is maintained concealed by the action of spring 6 as shown in Fig. 1, and when it is desired to expose portion M it is only necessary to manually move the free end of the lever 3 upwardly from the position shown in Fig. 3 to the position shown in Fig. 4, which rotates pin 2 and moving arm I!! downwardly and outf.

From the above it will be observed that I have designed a novelty pin Which may be worn normallygas an ordinary article of jewelry or may be operated to afford amusement, said device being pleasing in appearance, comprising few parts, simple in construction, and manufacturable at a minimum cost.
Although in practice it has been found that the form of the invention illustrated in the accompanying drawings and referred to in the above description as the preferred embodiment is the most eflicient and practical, yet realizing that conditions concurrent with the adoption of the invention will necessarily vary, it is well to emphasize that various minor changes in details of construction, proportion and arrangement of parts, may be resorted to Within the scope of the appended claim Without departing from or sacricing any of the principles of the invention.
Having thus described the invention, what I desire protected by Letters Patent is as set forth in the following claim:
In a novelty pin, a closed casing comprising front and back separable portions, said front portion being formed with a slot, a pin journaled in said front portion and extending Within said casing, a spacer element mounted on said pin, a substantially arcuate retractible indicia bearing arm mounted on and secured to the end of said pin in seating engagement with said spacer element and operable through said slot, a spring mounted on said spacer element having one end anchored to said front portion and the other engaging the edge of said arm, said spring functioning to normally urge said arm within the casing, an operating lever mounted on and secured to said pin exteriorly of the casing, said lever being manually operable to project, against the action of said spring, said arm and indicia into view beyond said casing, said spring automatically returning said arm and indicia to concealed position upon release of said lever, and means carried by said front portion to limit the retractile movement of said arm.
