My invention relates to bottle devices, and particularly to means of this character adapted for the application of liquids, such as cosmetics, antiseptics, and the like.
An object of the invention is to provide a device comprising a bottle and a holder therefor cooperating with each other so as to be handled as a unit of sensible size and character, yet separable into two useful units.
Another object of the invention is to provide a bottle adapted as a small thin compact unit suitable for carriage in a coat pocket or a handbag and yet have ample dimensions that the bottle is readily held in the fingers, and also is self-supporting.
Another object of the invention is to provide a bottle with a body capable, in given position, of causing the last small amount of liquid therein to gravitate to a lowermost area in the bottle and from which the liquid may be removed by means of a brush or other applicator.
Another object of the invention is to provide a combined stopper and applicator for the bottle in which the stopper is of a construction and length to facilitate holding the applicator in the fingers of the hand, in the manner of holding a pencil.
Another object of the invention is to provide means operative between the holder and the bottle with a force slip action whereby the bottle may be placed readily and latched in position in the holder, which will then provide a large base whereby the bottle will not readily tip over.
Another object of the invention is to construct the holder of the stated unit to be of substantially rigid character, yet which is of such shape and relation to the bottle that it may yield sufiiciently to act directly as the movable element of the aforesaid slip release means.
A further object of the invention is to provide a unit of the above indicated character that is simple and durable in construction, economical to manufacture and efiective in operation.
With such objects in view, as well as other advantages which may be incident to a utilization of the improvements, the invention comprises the parts and combinations thereof hereinafter set forth and claimed, with the understanding that the several necessary elements constituting the same may be varied in proportion, arrangement and texture without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
In order to make the invention more clearly understood, means are shown in the accompanying drawing for carrying the same into practical effect, without limiting the improvements in the useful applications thereof, to the particular constructions which, for purposes of explanation, are made the subject of illustration.

Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the assembled bottle and holder unit.
Referring to the drawing, the device therein shown comprises, in general, a bottle in, a combined stopper and applicator l2, and a holder Id.
The bottle, in this instance, comprises a body which, in all horizontal planes between the upper and lower limits of the body proper, is of narrow elongated substantially oval contour having longitudinal opposite sides [6 of long radius and ends 38 of short radius. A dome-like upper portion 20 is surmounted by a neck 22, and is surrounded at its base by an outwardly projecting bead or flange 24. the body, beneath the flange 24, has the aforesaid oval horizontal plane contours of downwardly progressively smaller area in all horizontal directions, terminating in a flat bottom 28.
Each side I6 is provided with a short bead-like outer projection or latch element extending along the corresponding side l6 across the lateral central vertical plane axis of the bottle body and the neck 22, substantially parallel to, and spaced slightly below, the flange 24.
The stopper l2 has a relatively long handle or top portion 32, provided, in this instance, with spiral convolutions, somewhat in the manner of a cornucopeia. The base 34 of the handle 32 has screw threaded attachment to the neck. 22, and carries a brush or applicator 36 which projects from the handle 32 into the bottle. The applicator may be any of various types, but, in the example, in which the liquid employed is finger nail polish, the applicator has a rigid upper shank 35 anchored in the handle 32, and a lower brush 40. The brush, as seen in Fig. 3, preferably extends to the bottom of the bottle in the full closed position of the handle. Thus, with the bottle and the brush formed and related as shown, the brush will be entirely efiective even The lower portion 26 of when only a very small amount of the liquid remains in the bottle.
The holder l4, which in this example is desirably constructed of suitable opaque plastic material, is of substantially cup shape having a relatively heavy large base 42. Sides 44 of the holder are of uniform substantially oval area in all horizontal planes conforming to but slightly larger than the oval area of the bottle immediately under the flange 24. A top edge or shoulder 46 of the sides 44 constitute a seat or rest for the flange 24 of the bottle.
The longer sides of the holder it are provided, at the inner surfaces thereof, with recesses or latch means 48 for slip latching and releasing cooperation with the beads or detents 38.
Although the holder may be of relatively heavy wall construction and constructed of material having only slight elasticity, by reason of the elongated oval horizontal section, there will be sufiicient lateral yield of the long sides of the holder such that, when the bottle is pressed downwardly into the holder, the above mentioned slip latching will occur without damage to the holder.
Further, with a little lateral play between the holder and the bottle, the latching and release may be assisted by slight pressure against the ends of the holder oval to cause the long sides of the oval to move slightly apart.
It is contemplated to furnish the unit and its contents for first sale to a. purchaser, with all of the parts shown, in which case the cup or receptacle provides a wider and more stable base for the bottle and, of course the contents of the bottle can be dispensed without removal from the cup. On the other hand, the bottle and cup can be separated, and used separately if desired, and can be readily reassembled. When separated, the flat oval shape of the bottle conveniently fits the hand and the inwardly tapered construction causes the nail polish or other liquid to flow toward the center of the bottom of the bottle. The tapered construction of bottle also facilitates proper positioning of the bottle 1 when inserted into the cup receptacle. The long top 32 on cap enables the cap to lie held in the fingers of the hand in the manner of a pencil and is sufiiciently lon to brace against the forefinger thus making it unnecessary to tightly grasp the base portion of the cap between the tips of the forefinger and thumb to insure holding and also to insure accuracy of application by the brush. Rather, the convolutions on the cap provide a better finger grip for other manipulations of the cap.
1. The combination of a bottle having rest means and detent means intermediate the top and bottom of the bottle, and an integral supporting holder for the bottle and having a supporting base and side walls with an open top, the holder being arranged to receive a portion of the bottle that is below said rest means and surround it on all sides below such rest means and including a seat for said rest means and a latch means for said detent.
2. The combination of a bottle having rest means and detent means intermediate the top and bottom of the bottle, the bottle below the rest means having converging walls, and a onepiece supporting holder for the bottle and having a supporting base and side walls with an open top, the holder being arranged to receive the converging portion of the bottle by insertion of the bottle by movement in the direction toward its bottom and including a seat for said restmeans and latch means for said detent, the converging walls facilitating positioning of the bottle in the holder for engagement of the detent and latch means.
3. In a device of the character described, a supporting receptacle having a base, upstanding side walls and an open top, a bottle received in the open top of said receptacle and having a protruding ridge intermediate the top and bottom thereof which engages the top of said receptacle to support the bottle therein, and a cooperating detent ridge and groove formed on said bottle and the interior of said receptacle respectively and adapted to engage each other when the supporting ridge i resting on the top of said receptacle.
4. In a device of the character described, a supporting receptacle element having a base, upstanding sidewalls and an open top, a bottle ele ment received in the open top of said receptacle, and having a protruding ridge intermediate the bottom and top thereof which engages the top of said receptacle to support the bottle therein, said elements having a cooperating detent and latching groove, respectively, one formed on the outside of said bottle, and the other on the inside of said receptacle engaging each other when the supporting ridge is resting on the top of said receptacle. 4
5. The combination of a bottle having rest means disposed in a horizontal plane around said bottle between the top and bottom thereof with respect to the upright position of said bottle on its base, and a supporting receptacle for said bottle, said receptacle comprising a base portion, a unitary open cup portion extending upwardly from said base portion and completely surrounding the lower portion of said bottle when inserted therein, said bottle and the interior of said receptacle having respectively a cooperating detent and detent receiving depression, said bottle, when latched in said receptacle, contacting it only on the lower side of said rest means and at said detent and detent-receiving portions.
