UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN W. HORN, OF RHEAS MILLS, TEXAS.
FIRE-PLACE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 254,216, dated February 28, 1882.
' A'pplication filed November 14,1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN W. HORN, of Rheas Mills, in the county of Collin and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fire-Places; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to, the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the back plate detached. Fig. 3 is a side view of one of the side plates, and Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view taken I through the back plate.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like letters of reference.
This invention relates to fire-places; and it consists essentially in the improved construction of the back plate and the combination therewith of side plates or jambs, 850., as will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the. drawings hereto annexed, A represents the back plate of my improved fire-place, which is constructed preferably of cast-iron. It is provided with a shoulder, B, separating the upper and lower parallel portions, 0 D, the lower-of which, D, together with the shoulder B, forms what I term the *backlog.
The upper portion, 0, is provided with orifices E, for the nails or other i'astenings by i which the back plate is secured in position in the fire-place.
The side plates or jambs, F F, consist of simple flat plates, having openings G for the nails or fastenings by which they are secured in position. Said side plates may be provided with flanges H to receive the shouldered portion of the edges of the back plate, thus fitting the latter neatly to the side plates or jambs.
The shoulder B of the back plate may be provided with openings I to receive the rear ends of the andirons, as shown inFigs. l and 4, and thus support them in position. Said holes or openings I, which are formed at suitable intervals along the entire length of the M is a detachable top plate, which, in combination with the cranes, will be frequently found of service. Said top plate is made of cast-iron and provided with openings N for' the ordinary stove-covers O. The under side of the plate is provided with flanges 1?, adapted to fit over the tops of a pair of cranes, as in Fig. 1, and thus secure the said top plate in position.
My improved fire-back is exceedingly simple and may be constructed at a small expense. By constructing it with the shoulder forming the back log, B D, a great saving of wood is effected.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States 1. In a fire-place, the back plate, A, having shoulder B, openings I, and bearings L, in combination with the adjustable cranes J, substandaily as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a fire-place, the combination, with the cranes J, of the top plate, M, having openings N, covers 0, and flanges P, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. As an improvement in fire-places, the combination of the back plate, A, having shoulder B, openings I, and bearings L, the side plates, F, having flanges H, the cranes J', and the detachable top plate, M, all constructed, arranged, and operating substantially as herein described, for the purpose shown and specified.
In testimony thatI claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
' JOHN W. HORN.
