Description
A. COHN ADJUSTABLE BOOK COVER July 10, 1951 Filed May 17, 1948 JNVENT ABRAHAM Patented July 10, 1951 NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE ADJUSTABLE BOOK COVER Abraham (John, Brooklyn, N. Y.
Application May 17, 1948, Serial No. 27,491
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a book cover, and, more particularly, aims to provide a plastic adjustable book cover.
An object of the invention is to provide a book cover which may be applied to any one of various books of different sizes, and which cover although it comprises a single structure all the parts of which are permanently interconnected, is selfadjustable in conformity with the size of the book with which it is used, incidental to placing the cover on the book.
The new book cover is comprised of a generally rectangular and elongate main sheet portion, said main portion having at one end a transverse pocket the open end of which faces the other end of said main portion, and said main portion hav-. ing at its other end a transverse tunnel open at both ends.
In making the book cover two rectangular sheet elements ar required. Thus, no waste of sheet material is necessitated. The sheet material preferably used is a very thin, almost film-like sheet material, and also preferably one which is a transparent plastic, such as the cellulose acetate product well-known as so-called cellophane, the hydrogenated rubber product well-known as socalled Pliofilm, or the like.
A feature of the invention, also, is the inclusion of a flexible strip, anchored at one end to a finish binding along a side edge of the cover, for use as a book mark.
Another feature of the invention is a simple and practicable means for restraining the cover against such shift relative to a book on which it is placed as might cause the cover to become undesirably displaced on a book of unusual dimensions.
A further object of the invention proposes the provision of elastic members extended across the ends of the main sheet portion between the main sheet portion and the material forming the tunnel and pocket and beneath which the covers of the book may be engaged for gripping the top and bottom and edges of the covers of the book in a manner to securely mount the cover in position upon the covers of the book and prevent relativ shifting.
It is a further object of the present invention to construct a book cover of plastic material which is simple and durable and which may be manufactured and sold at a reasonable cost.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description 2 Claims. (Cl. 281-34) and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
In the accompanying drawings forming a material part of this disclosure:
Fig. 1 is an elevational view of the book cover constructed in accordance with the present invention, and looking at the side thereof which is to lie against the exterior of the book.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged longitudinal sectional view taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1, but having the center portion broken away to reduce the overall size of the view.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged partial transverse sectional View taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1 and in dot and dash line showing a portion of a book cover engaged in position.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one ofthe elastic straps per se.
In the various views, thicknesses are much exaggerated, and certain parts beyond those at the point of observation or just beyond are material having an end portion 4| folded upon itself to form a cover receiving pocket 42. A smaller sheet 43, preferably of the same material as the sheet 40, is superimposed upon the other end portion of the larger sheet 4! The free edge of the folded over end portion M of the larger sheet 40 is finished by means of a tape 44, and the superimposed outer free edges of the larger sheet 48 and the smaller sheet 43 are finished respectively by tapes 45 and 46, see Fig. 2. The top and bottom edges of the larger sheet 40 are finished by tapes 41 and 68, which latter tapes also serve to secure the top and bottom edges of the folded over end portion 4! and the smaller sheet 43 in position on the inside face of the larger sheet 40.
A strip of material 49 forming a book mark, has its top end secured to the top edge of the larger sheet 40 by the tape 41.
Means is provided in connection with the pocket 42 and the tunnel 50 between the adjacent faces of the larger sheet 40 and the smaller sheet 43 for gripping the top and bottom edges of the covers of a book to hold the plastic cover in position upon the books covers and prevent relative slipping between the book and book cover.
This means comprises elastic straps 5| positioned adjacent the inner open end of the tunnel 50 and at the opening of the pocket 42 and which straps have their top and bottom ends anchored by the same stitches which secure the top and bottom tapes 4! and 48 in position. These straps are of a length slightly less than the width of the larger sheet 40, so that they tend to draw the top and bottom edges of the sheet 40 together. As indicated by the dot and dash lines 52 in Fig. 3, the covers of the book are adapted to be inserted between the adjacent faces of the straps 5| and the larger sheet 40, which causes the straps-5| to be extended to grip the top and bottom edges of the covers of the book and securely position the book cover thereon. If desired, pages of the book may be inserted between;
the adjacent faces of the turned over end. 4| and the respective strap 5| or between the ad'- jacent faces of the smaller sheet 43. andits re-' 'spective strap 5| to serve as a book mark.
The adjacent inner edges of the straps 5| are formed with projecting tabs 53 which projectbeyond the inner edges of the turned over end portion, 41 and the smaller sheet 43, by which a finger grip may be had on the straps SI for purpose of facilitating. the engagement of the covers. of the book in position beneath the. straps 5|.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise construction herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes andmodifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
- Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
1. In a book cover having a large flexible sheet of material for extension along the outer covers of a book with narrow elongated sheets of material extended along the inner face of the large flexible sheet at the ends thereof and secured at their ends tov the largesheet of material. forming pockets having openings vdirected toward one another to receive the free edge portions. of the. covers of the book, means at the openings ofthe pockets for gripping the top and bottom edges of the covers of the book, comprising elastic straps Within the pockets extended parallel to the openings and having their ends secured in position by the same means which secures the. ends of the narrow sheets of material to the large sheet of material, said elastic straps having their inner edges flush with the inner edges of the narrow sheets, and means on said elastic straps so that a grip can be had thereon for lifting said elastic straps away from the adjacent face of said large sheet of material so that the covers of the book can be inserted into said pockets between the adjacent faces of said elastic straps and said large sheet of material.
2. In a book cover having a large flexible sheet of material for extension along the outer covers of a book with narrow elongated sheets of material extended along the inner face of the large flexible sheet at the ends thereof and secured at their ends to the large sheet of material forming pockets having openings directed toward one another torreceive the free edge portions of the covers of the book, means at the openings of the pockets for gripping the top and bottom edges of the covers of the book, comprising elastic straps within the pockets extended parallel to the openings and having their ends secured in position b the same means which secures the ends of the narrow sheets of material to the large sheet of material, said elastic straps having their inner edges flush with the inner edges of the narrow sheets, and means on said elastic straps so that a grip can be had thereon for lifting said elastic straps away from the adjacent face of said large sheet of material so that the covers of the book can be inserted into said pockets between the adjacent faces of said elasticstraps and said large sheet of material, said means comprising tabs formed on the inner edges of said elastic straps intermediate the ends thereof and projected from the openings of said pockets.
