M. E. GAMPFIELD.
WRENCH. No. 257,468. Patented May 9,1882...
lllllllllllllglim UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MATTHEW E. GAMPFIELD, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming .part of Letters Patent No. 257,468, dated May 94, 1882.
Application filed March Q9, 1882.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MATTHEW E. CAMIL FIELD, of Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in IVrenches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in wrenches; and it consists in the peculiar con struction of the ferrule in one piece, which unites the shank of the wrench with the handle, and which also forms the socket for the head of the adjusting-screw that operates the movable jaw.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section.
A is the shank of the wrench, to which is attached the fixed jaw B, and upon which the movable jaw C slides.
D is a ferrule having a socket, d, to receive the end ot' the shank A, in which it is firmly attached by a rivet through them, or by having the end of the shank inserted through the partition-wall in the ferrule and headed down. The said ferrule is also provided with a socket, d', into which a wooden handle, E, is secured by a rivet. The ferrule D is also provided with a slotted projection, F, on the upper side, having one slot, f, for the head g ot' the screw G,
and another, f', for the screw itself to revolve in, which operates the movable' jaw C. The front side of said slot forms the bearing in (No model.)
which the screw G revolves. The movable jaw has a screw-threaded socket, c, in which the screw G works to move it back and forth. The head g is secured to ille screw by a rivet, or it may be secured by forcing it onto the screw tightly. In constructing these screwsI cut a long screw-rod and then cut it up into pieces of sufiicient length for use.
The advantage of this ferrule is its firmness and solidity in attaching the shank to the wooden handle. In the old method of making a long-pointed shank and inserting it into the wood, it is liable to become loose or the handles are liable to split. This defect is entirely overcome by my improved ferrule.
Having described my invention, I claim- 1. In a wrench ofthe kind described, the head g, secured to the end ot' the screw G, in combination with the projection F, having the two slotsf and f', as and for the purpose specified.
2. The improved ferrule D, having the sockets d and d', and the projection F, and having the slotsf and f for the head g of the adjusting-screw G to revolve in, in combination with the shank A, handle E, and screw G of a. wrench, substantially as described.
