Application July 13, 1948, Serial N0. 38 ,468
1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to razors used by barbers and an object of this invention is to provide a razor blade holder in which the cuttin blade is interchangeable, and constructed in such a manner that the blade may be reversed, for usin the end of the blade which was previously at the inner end with respect to the handle; at the outer end of the blade holder.
Another object of this invention is to provide a razor blade holder having a longitudinally extending slot therethrough for frictionally retaining the blade therein.
Another object of this invention is to provide a razor blade holder of such construction that the blade while separable from the holder, may when inserted therein beheld firmly in interengaged position and yet permit the blade to be easily withdrawn therefrom.-
Another object of this invention is to provide a razor blade holder for blades of ribbon-like thickness and having a resilient edge guardpivotally mounted on the razor blade holder and movable into interlocked engagement with the free end portion of the holder to cover one of the cutting edges of the blade when a double edge blade is used.
Another object of this invention is to provide razor blade holder specially designed to receive and positively grip blades of ribbon like thickness, of the kind used in safety razors with one or two cutting edges but double the length of the usual safety razor blade.
Another object of this invention is to form a notch in each end wall of the respective blades and to provide a tongue at each end of the razor blade holder, and means whereby the two tongues are made to engage the notches in the blade to positively grip and hold a blade in operative relation in the razor blade holder.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention will be hereinafter more particularly described, and the combination and arrangement of parts will be shown in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claim which forms part of this specification.
Reference will now be had to the drawings, wherein like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the razor blade holder and shaving blade, the holder being broken away to show a blade with two cutting edges held at both ends.
Figure 2 is an external view of the razor blade holder and shaving blade shown in Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a crosssectional view, the section being taken as on line 3-3. in Figure 2.
Figure 4 is an enlarged cross-sectional view, the section being taken as on line 44 in Figure 2.
Figure 5 is a front elevation of a razor blade guard, on an enlarged scale.
Figure 6 is an end view of a cover plate pivotally mounted on the razor blade guard, on an enlarged scale.
Figure 7 is a perspective view of the razor blade holder, on an enlarged scale.
Figures 8 and 9 are front views of a double edge and of a single edge blade used with this invention.
In the illustrated embodiment of the invention, the numeral I0 indicates a razor blade holder for use by barbers and adapted to receive and positively grip a razor. blade II of ribbon-like thickness and of the kind used in safety razors.
The razor blade holder It) comprises an elongated body I2 having a slot I3. therethrough of a size for frictionally mounting a blade therein as above described. The slot I3 forms a bifurcation with two gripping arms I4, I 4.
As best shown in Figure l, the inner end wall I5 defining the slot I3 has a tongue member I6 in abutment therewith and secured to the lower face portion of the body I2 by screws or rivets I I.
It is to be noted that the tongue member I6 has a semi-circular end portion designed to fit into a notch I8 usually found in single edge razor blades. For the purposes of this invention blades will be used havingan elongated notch at each end, the notches having semi-circular inner faces.
The razor blade holder I0 also comprises a hollow guard 20 having one end suitably pivoted on a pin 2| in the rear upper portion of the elongated body I2. As best shown in Figure 4, the hollow guard 20 is of substantially inverted U-shaped cross-section having inclined side walls 22, 22, the lower edges of which are bent to face each other so as to extend into interlocking engagement in grooves 23, 23, in the outer faces of the gripping arms I4, I4. The side walls 22 are preferably made of the same length as the gripping arms I4, I4.
It is to be noted that at the free end of the hollow guard 20 is a closure plate 24 which is pivotally mounted on a pin 25 and has an integral tongue 26 of the same general outer dimensions as the fixed tongue I6.
In assembled relation, as shown in Figures 1 and 2, the user places the razor blade II in the body I2 so that an end notch I8 in the razor blade is in engagement with the tongue 16. The user then swings the hollow guard 20 about the pivot 2| to bring itslower edges in engagement with the grooves 23. The user then swings the cover plate 24 about the pin 25 to bring the tongue 26 into engagement with the outer notch in the razor blade. The arrangement is such that in asembled relation the tongues I6 and 26 are in alinement lengthwise of the elongated body l2. 7
Figure 8 is a front view of a double edge razor blade ll used with this invention. The blade II has a notch 18 at each end. The inner ends of the notches are made semi-circular. The blades H are of ribbon-like thickness and about twice as long as the blades used in safety razors.
Figure 9 is a front view of a single edge razor blade 3| similar to the blade H. The blade 3| has a covered edge opposite the cutting edge. In use, the blade 3| is inserted in the razor blade holder 10 in the same manner as the blade Ii shown in Figure 1. The blade 3| has a cover 32 opposite the cutting edge as is usual in the art.
As shown in Figures 1 and 4, the closure plate 24 has two cars 33 which fit between the side walls 22 of the hollow guard in frictional engagement to retain the plate 24 in engagement with the hollow guard 20 and with a blade to prevent the blade from getting loose during the use.
To facilitate handling of the blades when inserting or removing same from the body [2, a cardboard cover or sheath is placed over one of the cutting edges so as not to cut the fingers of the user.
It is to be noted that the structure herein disclosed is primarily for the use of barbers. use eliminates the necessity for honing and grinding the blades as it is intended that renewal blades will be sold at such a low price that the used blades will be disposed of. The device how- Its 7 ever permits stropping of the razor blades as required for longer use.
In accordance with the patent statutes I have described and illustrated the preferred embodiment of my invention, but it will be understood that various changes and modifications can be made therein without departing from the spirit of the invention as defined by the appended claim.
I claim: 7
In a barbers razor, a razor blade holder for a ribbon-like blade of uniform thickness throughout its length, and. having a notch in each end wall, said razor blade holder comprising an elongated body having a slot therethrough of a size for frictionally mounting said blade there- .in, a tongue secured at the inner end of said slot, said body having grooves on opposite sides,
'a hollow guard pivoted at one end of said body and movable over said'blade holder and with its lower edges in locked engagement with said grooves, said hollow guard having a tongue plate pivoted at its outer end for covering the front end of said body, one end of said blade being adapted to be mounted on said inner tongue, said plate being movable to bring its tongue into a notch at the other end of said blade to retain said blade in cutting position in said razor blade holder, and means on said plate for interlocking said plate with said hollow guard.
