color against the skin. As a consequence,
many of the stockings so handled became soiled, distorted, snagged and picked, and were subsequently returned to the manufacturers with claims for rebates or substitutions at a loss. With a view toward avoiding'such contingencies, it has been proposed to pack individual pairs of folded or rolled'up stockings in small sealed transparent containers, but this scheme has met with but little success due to the inability of the prospective purchasers to properly judge the stockings for gauge and color through the wrappings.
My invention has for its chief aim, to overcome the above drawbacks. I make possible of realization, as hereinafter more fully disclosed, through provision of a package characterized by having attached to the container, 2. swatch of fabric corresponding ex- This desideratum actly to that of the enclosed article or articles in such a manner that it may be extended, for convenience of close inspection and feel without necessitating removal of the articles from the package as heretofore.
In the drawings, Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a package embodying my invention; and Fig. 2 is a cross section taken as indicated by the angled arrows II-II in Fig. 1.
For the purposes of exemplification herein, I have shown my improved package as comprising a container 3 fashioned to rectangular box-like configuration and dimensioned for reception of an individual pair of ladies stockings which have been suitably rolled or prefolded into a small compass and enveloped in a separate wrapper 4 of thinner sheet material so as to snugly fit into the container without attendant creasing or wrinkling. The container 3 and the wrapper 4 may be of opaque material such as cardboard and paper respectively, or they may both be of transparent material like Celluloid or cellophane if visibility of the contents is desired. The wrapper t is not absolutely essential and may therefore be omitted.
Attached to the package in accordance with my'invention so as to be projectable therefrom is a swatch 5 of fabric corresponding exactly in color and gauge to the fabric of the enclosed 1 Claim. (01. 206-46) stockings. The swatch 5 may be secured as by inserting a narrow edge margin thereof between the back wall 6 of the container and the intucked fiap 7 of a side wall 8 incident to sealing of the container with adhesive if made of cardboard, or by heat fusion if formed of Celluloid or cellophane. Of course, if desired, the container may be left unsealed and the swatch otherwise made fast to it.
By laying the swatch 5 over her hand, a prospective purchaser can at once determine Whether or not the gauge and color of the fabric are satisfactory to her requirements without having to remove the stockings from the container, with consequent avoidance of marring or soiling of them as heretofore in retailing hosiery. I
It is to be understood that the container may be configured and constructed otherwise than shown in the drawings and used for articles of textile manufacture other than individual pairs of stockings without departing from the spirit and purpose of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
In combination, a pair of stockings folded into a mass of small compass, and a flat box-like merchandising container of relatively stiff transparent thermo-plastlc sheet material whereof one side wall has a tucked-in terminal fiap overlapped by and heat sealed to a corresponding edge margin of an adjacent side wall, and a swatch of fabric identical with that of the stockings with one edge portion only thereof secured in the seal between the aforesaid fiap and said overlapped margin of said adjacent side wall, the other portion of said swatch extending exteriorly of the container and said swatch being of sufiicient length for ready inspection and feel.
