Application November 4, 1949, Serial No. 125,610
2 Claims.
The invention relates to improvements in adjustable baby bonnets and is more particularly concerned with a bonnet having common means to adjust the neck portion, face opening and crown.
Baby bonnets constructed in the conventional manner are quickly outgrown and must be discarded long before the expiration of their useful life. It is, therefore, an object of the present invention to provide a baby bonnet which is easily and quickly adjusted to a wide range of head sizes and in such a manner as not to detract from its appearance.
Another object is to provide an adjustable baby bonnet with novel single means to effect adjustment of the neck portion, face opening and crown.
Another object is to provide a novelly constructed, adjustable baby bonnet that is not eX- pensive to manufacture but is easy to adjust and very pleasing in appearance.
Other objects of the invention will appear from the following description and accompanying drawing and will be pointed out in the annexed claims.
In the accompanying drawing there has been disclosed a structure designed to carry out the various objects of the invention, but it is to be understood that the invention is not confined to the exact features shown as various changes may be made within the scope of the claims which follow.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a front perspective view of a baby bonnet, embodying the features of the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a rear perspective view of the bonnet.
Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view of the honnet, taken substantially in the plane of line 33 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a transverse taken substantially on line Fig. 5 is a sectional detail view, stantially on line 5-5 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings, the bonnet includes a crown H, a neck portion indicated at i2, and a visor l3 integral with the crown and surrounding the face opening. The bonnet is fabricated from two thicknesses of material defining an outer layer l4 and a lining l5 suitably secured together by stitching. A drawtape passage !6 is provided at the juncture of the visor it with the crown H and it extends around the back of the bonnet along the margin of the neck portion l2, as best shown in Fig. 3. This drawdetail sectional view,
4-4 of Fi 1.
taken subtape passage preferably is defined in part by two parallel rows of stitches l1 extending along the face opening of the bonnet,'which rows of stitches terminate in alignment with the top and bottom edges of a hem i8 and coextensive with the marginal edge of the neck portion i2. As shown in Fig. 2, the hem 18 in the neck portion is suitably slit, as at 19, to provide an entrance opening for a purpose to be described presently.
The front center portion of the crown is provided with parallel drawtape passages generally indicated at 20, which passages extend downwardly from substantially the upper center of the crown at the front thereof and merge with the drawtape passage 16 adjacent the visor i3. Upon reference to Fig. 1, it will be noted that the drawtape passage I6 is not continuous across the front of the bonnet but instead is interrupted and each end merges with one of the parallel drawtape passages 20. The drawtape passages 20 are, like the passage l6, formed by stitching parallel rows of stitches 21 through the outer material M and lining I5. Thus, two distinct drawtape passages are provided; each consisting of a passage 20 and connecting portions of passage [6 and hem it.
A pair of drawtapes 22 is threaded in the drawtape passages l6 and 20 and in the hem l8. The drawtapes preferably are inserted through the hem opening [9 with one extending in either direction through the margin hem [8, through the connecting passage l6, and upwardly through the respective drawtape passageway 26. The ends of the drawtapes terminating at the upper ends of the drawtape passages 20 are firmly secured at said passageway ends preferably as by means of stitches 23.
It should be quite apparent that when the extending ends of the drawtapes 22 are pulled the neck perimeter of the bonnet and the margin surrounding the face opening are shirred in proportion to the extent of the pulling. At the same time, the front area of the crown is likewise shirred to reduce the overall size thereof. This shirring of the crown and of the bonnet perimeter adjusts said bonnet to various head sizes and, when so adjusted, the extending ends of the drawtapes may be tied into a bow or otherwise secured together. If desired, tapes 24 may be attached, as by stitching, to the base of the crown rearwardly of each end of the visor I3 for tying beneath the chin of the wearer to hold the bonnet in place.
Although an exemplary form of the invention has been shown in the drawing and described in the foregoing specification, it should be understood that the invention is capable of embodying a variety of modifications in structure and may be embodied in bonnets constructed other than as illustrated without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In a bonnet having a crown and visor, a pair of drawtape passa'ges extending from the top of said cro'wn"downwardly in substantially parallel relation to each other and to adjacent points located at the juncture of said visor and crown adjacent the front edge thereof and thence along the edge of said crown in opposite directions to terminate in an opening in the back of the crown, and a drawtape in each passage, each secured at one end at the top end of its respective passage and having its other end extend through the opening for tying.
2. In a bonnet having a crown the lower orouter edge thereof defining a face opening and a neck portion, and a visor connected to the crown and surrounding the face opening, a pair of substantially parallel drawtape crownpassages extending downwardly from adjacent the top of the crown to substantially the juncture of the crown with the visor, midway between juncture one in communication with each crown passage, said juncture passages extending in opposite directions along said juncture and terminating in a drawtape passage in the neck portion, said neck portion passage having an opening therein so as to define two series of passages each including a part of the neck portion passage, a juncture drawtape passage and a crown passage, and'a drawtapein each series of passages, each secured at one end to the crown of the bonnet and emerging through the opening of the neck portion passage.
