Description

March 17, 1953 L. e. MEYERS ARTICLE SUSPENSION MEANS Filed June 5, 1950 ATTORNEY5 Patented Mar. 17, 1953 ARTICLE SUSPENSION MEANS 7 Louis G. Meyers, New York, N. Y'.,- assignor ito Khk Enterprises, Inc., a corporation of Delaware Application June 5, 1950, Serial No. 166,099
This invention relates to anarticle suspension means and is an improvement over the device embodied in my copending application Serial No. 157,810, filed April 24, 1950, for Combined Bag and Glove Holder. 7
An object of this invention is to provide an article suspension means for suspending one or more articles from an edge of a table or counter which is ;so constructed that at least one of the articles, such as a pair of gloves, may be removed from the device while the device is sup,- porting a handbag, umbrella, or other article.
Another object of this invention is to provide a suspension means of this kind which may be left attached to a handbag, umbrella or the like.
A further object of this invention is to provide a suspension means including an improved clamping means for clamping gloves or the like to the device.
With the above and other objects in view, my invention consists in the arrangement, combination and details of construction disclosed in the drawings and specification, and then more particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a detailed side elevation of an article suspension means constructed according to an embodiment of this invention showing th device in applied position on an edge of a table or the like.
Figure 2 is a detailed front elevation of the device partly broken away.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of Figure 2.
Figure 5 is a fragmentary sectional view showing the cushioning member on the upper leg of the device.
Figure 6 is a detailed side elevation partly broken away of a modified form of this invention.
Figure 7 is a detailed front elevation of the device shown in Figure 6.
Figure 8 is a fragmentary side elevation of the upper portion of the device shown in Figures 6 and 7.
Referring to the drawing the numeral designates generally an inverted L-shaped supporting bar which is provided with an upper side ll formed with obtusely related members [2 and [3. The member l3 has mounted on the terminal end thereof a rubber cushion member I4 provided with a socket l within which member I3 snugly engages in order to provide a means whereby cushion member 14 will be firmly held on mem- 1 claim. (01. 248-215) ber IS. The latter is formed with an offset retaining member I6 as indicated in Figure 5.
L-shapedmember Hi includes a depending side i! which is adapted to xtend downwardly over the edge of the support [8, and depending side i'l has secured thereto a clamping member generally designated as l9. The clamping member I 3 includes an inner or fixed body 26 constructed in the form of an elongated flat plate which is formed at its lower end with an obtusely disposed extension 2|.
A pivoted clamping jaw 22 is pivoted at its upper end to jaw 20 being formed at its upper end with an obtusely disposed extension 23, and a narrow eye or loop 24 extends from extension 23 and loosely engages through an opening 25 formed'in the upper end of jaw 20. The lower end of extension 2| is formed with a looped keeper 26 which projects forwardly, and the lower end of jaw 22 is formed with an obtusely and inwardly inclined extension 21 terminating in a locking member 28 which is engageable with keeper 26.
The two extensions 23 and 21 project in the same direction from jaw 22 so as to provide a space 29 within which a pair of gloves 30 or other articles are adapted to be clamped. A chain or flexible suspension member 3| depends from keeper 26 and is loosely secured to keeper 26 by means of a loop attaching member 32. The handle 33 of an umbrella, handbag or other article is adapted to be engaged through the flexible member SI, and member 3! is formed with a clasp or locking member 34 of conventional construction so that flexible member 3| may be releasably engaged about the handle 33.
Attaching member 32 is preferably stamped from a piece of sheet metal and is formed with an upper loop 35 of elongated configuration for engagement about the looped keeper or ring 26. Attaching member 32 also includes a split ring or eye 36 as shown in Figure 2 through which the chain or flexible member 3| is adapted to loosely engage.
Referring now to Figures 6, 7, and 8, there is disclosed a modified form of this invention which includes a substantially inverted L-shaped supporting bar 31. The bar 31 includes an upper side 38 which is disposed on an acute angle with respect to the depending side 39. The terminal end portion of upper side 38 is offset as indicated at 40 so that the rubber socket or cushioning member 4| will be snugly retained on the end of upper side 38. The depending side 39 has secured thereto an elongated channel-shaped fixed jaw member, and a substantially V-shaped clamping jaw 43 is pivoted at its upper end as indicated at 44 between the parallel sides 45 of channel member 42.
The edges of the parallel sides of channel member 42 are formed withblunt or rounded teeth 46 so that an article engaged between jaw 42 and 43 will beheld against downward slipping. The lower end of jaw 42 is provided with a pair of outwardly flared guide members 41 and a ring shaped keeper 48 extends from the lower end of jaw 42 and is engaged by the reduced end 49 of jaw 43. An attaching member 32w similar to attaching member 32 is engaged with keeper 48; and a chain or fiexible suspension member" an. is engaged through the eye 36a of attaching member 32a.
In the use of this suspension means the gloves may be clamped in the clamping member I9, and a handbag, umbrella, or other article may be secured to. the. flexible suspension member 3 I. The device is engaged over an edge of atable, counter, or the. like. bydisposing the. upper leg [I on the upper side oi the support with. cushion member l4 engaging the upper. surface. of the support so as 25 4 side and a. depending side, said upper side being engageable over an edge of a support, a cushion member on the end of said upper side, a fixed clamping jaw of fiat sheet material secured to the depending side of said bar and extending upwardly above said upper side, a movable clamping jaw of fiat sheet material pivotally secured at one end to an end of said fixed jaw exteriorly and above the conjunction of the: legs of said L-shaped supporting bar, cooperating means including a rolled and downwardly turned end of said. fixed jaw forming a depression adjacent the end of said fixed jaw and an upwardly and inwardly' curved end of said movable jaw engageable insaid depression for latching said movable jaw in clamping position, said jaws each including an obtusely angled bend whereby to form a parallelogram having spaced apart sides when said jaws are closed and a flexible suspension member depending from the rolled end of said fixed jaw.
