Description

April 20, 1954 A. J. BRYANT I DEVICE FOR TRUING FACE GRINDING WHEELS Filed June 15, 1953 uutllllliii Patented Apr. 20, 1954 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE DEVICE FOR TRUING FACE GRINDING WHEELS 6 Claims. 1
This invention relates to an improved truing device for setting the diamond surface of a face type grinding wheel in precise balance with its face in a plane at right angles to the axis of the wheel spindle.
An object of the invention is to provide a truing device which cooperates with a conventional grinding wheel mount to balance any one of a number of types and sizes of face grinding wheels that may be secured on a spindle by means of said mount.
Another object of this invention is to provide a truing device for face type grinding wheels that has an extremely fine adjustment and which is automatically and effectively locked in adjusted position during rotation of the wheel.
A further object of the invention is to provide fora truing device of the foregoing character a safety guard which will eliminate the hazard of accidental loss of adjustment parts during operation of the grinding wheel.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in certain constructions and arrangements of parts that shall be hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings which illustrate the preferred embodiment of my invention:
Fig. 1 is a front elevation of a face type grinding wheel provided with the truing member of this invention.
Fig. 2 is a section taken on line 22 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a section taken on line 33 of Fig. 2.
Fig. l is a section similar to Fig. 3 showing the ring guard in a wheel adjusting position.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the ring guard.
With reference to the drawing the numeral I indicates the usual face type grinding wheel conventionally mounted on a rotatable spindle i l by an adaptor i2. The adaptor has a tapered bore l3 which receives the tapered end M of the spindle H, the adaptor being secured on the spindle by means of a pull-up nut l countersunk in the adaptor and threaded at IS on the end of the spindle. The adaptor has an annular flange I! at one end and is provided at its opposed end with external threads 18 which form cooperative means for mounting various sizes and types of face grinding wheels on the spindle. As best shown in Fig. 2 the grinding wheel has a central arbor I!) which closely fits the adaptor, the wheel being secured thereon by a washer 20 and a nut 2|, the latter being threaded to the external threads it! of the adaptor. The grinding wheel has a relatively thin circular web 200 that has an annular diamond cutting surface 220 formed around the front face of its peripheral portion.
The truing member of this invention is generally indicated by the reference numeral 22 and as best shown in Fig. 2 is preferably mounted on the adaptor between the flange I1 and the back face of the grinding wheel H3. The member essentially comprises an annular body portion 23 provided with a central aperture 24 that has a slip fit connection with the adaptor. A rearwardly extending, annular shoulder 25 is integrally formed on the outer peripheral portion of the body 23, said shoulder extending rearwardly from the truing device body and overlapping at least a part of the annular flange H. A number of radially extending, threaded bores 26 are formed in the member and are preferably positioned therein such that they are partially in the annular shoulder 25 and partially in the body 23 of the truing device, said bores each being adapted to receive a wedge element that preferably takes the form of cone pointed set screw 21. point of the set screws engage against the forward outer edge of the flange I! and to the better accomplishment of this end the said edge is preferably ground to an inclined surface corresponding to the taper provided the cone points of the set screws.
To true the grinding wheel after it has been mounted on the spindle it is only necessary to insert a wrench into one or more of the hexagonal sockets of the proper set screws then turning them down to advance the particular set screws radially inwardly until a precise adjustment is made such that an instrument will indicate that the diamond face of the wheel is in a plane at right angles to the axis of the spindle II. A very fine adjustment can be made because the eifective axial movement of each set screw is decreased by the inclined engagement of the cone point with the flange I1. connection between the cone and the flange r creates considerable friction thus effectively looking the set screws against the flange during operation of the wheel.
My truing member may be provided with a means for retaining the set screws within the truing member so that loose, unused set screws will not become accidentally detached from the device during operation of the wheel. The retainer consists of a ring 28 which snugly encircles the truing member and is provided with a number of openings 29 which in wheel ad- As best shown in Fig. 2 the cone Further the justing position will be in registry with the set screws so that a wrench may be inserted there through into the socket parts of the screws.-
The ring is rotatably secured in position on the truing member by forming an annular groove 30 in the central part of the peripheral face of the member whereby the groove intersects the boresZB-iormed therein. The groove freely receives a. number of detents 3! extending inwardly from the central part of the retainer ring. formed in the ring by making a pair of parallel slits 32 in the body of the ring and then.
driving the ring body portion between the slits inwardly into the groove after the ring has been.
placed in position on the member.
There will be times when only one" or two of the set screws need be adjusted to bear against the annular flange 11 of the adaptor to bring the. wheel. into precise balance. Under these conditions the unused set screws are liable to be turned from their bores during, operation of the. wheel. With the retaining ring of this invention in place these set screws will not become detached from the truing device even though. the retainer ring is not moved to the effective guarding position shown in Fig. 3' after adjustment of the set screws. Automatic closi'ng of the ring. is secured by the initial accel'eration of the grinding Wheel which will cause the ring to slip relative to the truing device brought about by the inertia of the ring. Ihe ring will continue to turn until the detents 31' come in contact with one or more of the. screws in which position the openings 29' in. the ring are out of registry with the set screws.
What. is claimed is:

In a device for truing a face type grinding wheeloperatively mounted on a rotatable spindle" between an annular flange fixed on an intermediate part of the spindle and a draw up; wheel fastening means removably secured to the end of the spindle the combination of an annular truing member mounted concentrically on the spindle in engagement with a side of the wheel, said member having a peripheral shoulder overlapping at least a. portion of the spindle flange, a circul'arrow of. radially adjustable devices carried bythe shoulder, and each of said? devices having a tapered inner end for operative engagement with the adjacent face oi the spindle flange.
