1 Claim.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements and structural refinements in turpentine pullers, and the principal object of the invention is to provide a puller having a separable connection between the body and handle portions thereof, so that the body may be quickly and easily replaced when its cutting edge becomes worn, or so that the handle may be replaced when broken, without necessity of discarding the entire tool.

Some of the advantages of the invention reside in its simplicity of construction, in its efficient and dependable operation and in its adaptability to economical manufacture.

With the above more important objects and features in view and such other objects and features that may become apparent as this specification proceeds, the invention consists essentially of the arrangement and construction of parts as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:

Figure 1 is a perspective view of the invention;

Figure 2 is a group perspective view of the invention in its disassembled position;

Figure 3 is a horizontal sectional view of the assembled invention, and

Figure 4 is a fragmentary sectional detail, taken substantially in the plane of the line 4-4 in Figure 3.

Like characters of reference are employed to designate like parts in the specification and throughout the several views.

Referring now to the accompanying drawings in detail, the invention consists of a turpentine puller which is designated generally by the reference character in and comprises a flat tubular body 12 provided at one end thereof with a sharp cutting edge M. One side of the body is formed with the usual notch or recess [6 extending upwardly from the cutting edge It, and the essence of novelty of the invention resides in the provision of readily separable means for attaching a handle it to the body I2, as will be presently explained.

A pair of spaced, mutually convergent members 20 are provided on the body l2 between the upper edge of the recess l6 and the top edge of the body, these members coacting with the body in defining a tapered socket 22. This socket is substantially parallel to the axis of the body 12 and it will be noted that the members 20 are convergent both downwardly and outwardly with respect to the body, so that the socket 22 is tapered accordingly.

The handle I 8 is equipped at one end thereof with the usual finger piece 24 while the other end of the handle is formed integrally with the lateral extension 25 having a tapered wedge 28 provided thereon.

The wedge 28 is complementary in size and configuration to the socket 22 wherein the wedge is removably held by frictional engagement with the members 20.

The free end portion of the handle I8 projects beyond the cutting edge IQ of the body and it will be observed that when pulling force is applied to the handle when the tool is in use, the wedge 23 will be firmly lodged in the socket 22. However, by pushing the handle upwardly relatively to the body i2, the wedge 28 will become readily disengaged from the socket 22 and the body and handle will be easily separated, when so desired.

It is believed that the advantages and use of the invention will be clearly understood from the foregoing disclosure and accordingly, further description thereof at this point is deemed unnecessary.

While in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred embodiment of this invention, it is to be understood that minor changes in the details of construction and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.

Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:

A turpentine puller comprising a flat tubular body provided at one end thereof with a cutting edge, a pair of spaced convergent members provided on one side of said body adjacent the other end thereof, said members defining a tapered elongated socket substantially parallel to the axis of said body and tapering in the direction of said cutting edge, an elongated handle disposed exteriorly of said body and having one end portion thereof projecting beyond the cutting edge, a lateral extension at the other end of said handle, and a tapered elongated wedge provided on said extension, said wedge being frictionally but removably held in said socket.
