April 12, 1955 P. DE GRAAFF BULK MATERIAL COLLECTING CART Filed March 29, 1952 United States Patent BULK MATERIAL COLLECTING CART Pieter De Graaif, The Hague, Netherlands, assignor to N. V. Nederlandse TankApparaten-en Machinefabriek Netam, Rotterdam, and C. V Fabriek voor Auto-en Machinebouw, Reinigings-en Brandweermaterieel v/ h J. Geesink & Zonen, Nieuwstad, Weesp, Netherlands Application March 29, 1952, Serial No. 279,298
Claims. (Cl. 214-503) This invention relates to a bulk material collecting cart, especially to a refuse collecting cart of the rotating drum type, which comprises a more or less drum-shaped receptacle carrying a so-called pre-loader. The bulk material is deposited into the pre-loader and, when the 'latter is filled, transferred to the drum by rotation of this drum about a transverse axis. The emptying of the filled drum is accomplished by tilting it, about another transverse axis, to the rear.
The object of this invention is to provide a simple and reliable mechanism enabling to effect the two aforesaid rotational movements by means of one jack, or couple of jacks.
An example is shown diagrammatically in the drawing.
Figs. 1, 2 and 3 are side views of a refuse collecting vehicle with the drum in the normal travelling position, the 1rotated position and the dumping position, respective y.
1 is the drum-shaped receptacle carrying the preloader 2. The drum 1 can be rotated selectively about its axis 3 on rollers 16 (after removal of the locking pin 14), in order to transfer the refuse from the preloader into the drum (Fig. 2), or be tilted about the tilting axis 4, in order to empty the drum (Fig. 3). Both rotations are accomplished by a hydraulic cylinder or jack 5 mounted for swinging movement about the axis 6 on the vehicle frame 7. The piston rod 8 of said cylinder engages, through a transverse bar 9, two arms 10 mounted for rotation about the tilting axis 4 on the truck frame. The free ends 11 of said arms are each hinged to one end of links 12, the other ends of which are hinged to the drum as at 13.
The leverage formed by the members 10 and 12 lies, in the traveling position (Fig. 1) and during the dumping operation (Fig. 3), against the bottom of the drum and might form, in these positions, a rigid unit with the drum.
During the rotational movement (which is initiated by uncoupling hinge 4 of drum 1) the leverage starts operating and enables a rotation of the drum of more than 90, as illustrated in Fig. 2.
When it is to be feared that in the position of Fig. 3 the drum might turn over to the rear, this can be prevented by connecting one of the members 10 or 11 to the drum when the tilting movement is initiated. Preferably, this is accomplished automatically by a hook 15 suspended from the bottom of the drum and remaining inactive in the travelling position of Fig. 1 and during the rotational movement of Fig. 2. When the drum is tilted about the axis 4, however, the hook is swung by gravity to gradually engage the hinge 11 of the leverage, thus locking the latter to the drum whereby turning over of the drum is prevented.
Although the example described shows one jack, two levers and two links, it will be apparent that any number and any type or construction of jacks, levers or links will be within the scope of this invention.
The claims refer to one jack, one lever and one link so that they automatically include any plurality thereof.
The axis of rotation of the arms 10 need not necessarily coincide with the tilting axis of the drum, although such coincidence is shown and preferred.
What I claim is:
1. In a .vehicle for collecting, transporting and discharging bulk material and including a receptacle having a pie-loader, means for mounting said receptacle for 2,706,058 Patented Apr. 12, 1 955 pivotal movement on an axis centrally thereof and releasable means tiltably mounting said receptacle on a parallel axis spaced therefrom and adjacent said preloader for selective pivotal movement of said receptacle about said spaced parallel axes to respectively transfer material from said pre-loader to said receptacle and to discharge material from said receptacle with said preloader moved from said receptacle, and means for selectively swinging said receptacle about said axes, the improvement in said receptacle swinging means comprising a jack on the vehicle, and a leverage including a lever engaged by said jack and hinged at one end to the vehicle adjacent and'parallel to the axis adjacent the pre-loader, and a link connecting the other end of said lever with said receptacle.
2. In a vehicle as defined in claim 1, the combination of means for releasably connecting said receptacle to said leverage when said receptacle is pivoted about the axis adjacent the pre-loader.
3. In a vehicle as defined in claim 1, the combination of a hook suspended from said receptacle for engaging by gravity said leverage when said receptacle is pivoted about the axis adjacent the pre-loader.

5. In a vehicle for collecting, transporting and discharging bulk material and including a receptacle having a pre-loader mounted at its rear end, said receptacle being mounted on the vehicle for selective pivotal movement about two spaced parallel axes arranged transversely to the longitudinal axis of the vehicle and respectively spaced from and adjacent said pre-loader to respectively transfer material from said pre-loader to said receptacle and to discharge material from said receptacle with said pre-loader moved from said receptacle, and means for selectively swinging said receptacle about said axes, the improvement in said means comprising a jack on the vehicle, and a leverage including a lever engaged by said jack and hinged at one end to the vehicle adjacent and parallel to the axis adjacent the pre-loader, said lever extending, in the untilted position, in a forward and upward direction from its axis of rotation, and a link extending, in the untilted position, substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis of the vehicle and connecting the other end of said lever with said receptacle.
