READING-CARD.

Specification of Letters Patent No. 27,266, dated February 28, 1860.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HENRY F. BOND, of Valthaln, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new Device to Facilitate Reading; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, making part of this specication.

Figure I, is a full view of my improved apparatus; Fig. II, the apparatus as applied in a proper way to a book.

A, is a card made of paste-board, inetalvor other substance.

B, is a hook and paper-knife combined made of brass or other substance.

O, is a nipper made of brass or other substance.

D, is an elastic cord.

a, is a metallic loop riveted to the card A.

The elastic cord D is attached at its ends to the hook B and the nipper O, by being passed through holes and firmly attached to each. The loop c is passed over the cord D and will slide up and down upon the cord with just friction enough to steady it.

My present invention has for its object the production of a convenient apparatus for easy reading, especially in carriages, railroad cars and steamboats-for obviating the exceeding annoyance of the vibratory Inotion which has the effect of confusing the print.

That others skilled in the art may understand and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its application to its purpose.

The nipper C is made to hold by its power as a spring upon the back or side ofthe book cover. The long arm of the hook B is thrust in between the leaves, the other arm t0 which the cord D is attached, hanging over the open page.

Holding the book with one hand the other may be used to hold the card A and to slide it down the page upon the cord D, keeping it just below the line one is reading, which prevents that confusion with the next line which makes it diiiicult to read when there is any vibratory motion or when the eyes are blurred. The long arm of the hook B has its edges sharpened and may be used as a paper-knife for cutting the leaves of a book Sac., the elasticity of the cord D enabling one to use it while O is still attached to the book. This little apparatus is a useful reading card, paper-knife and book-mark all in one.

What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The combination of the card, the elastic cord and the paper-knife for the purposesy and substantially after the manner above described.
