1 Claim. (Cl. 4-242) This invention relates to sanitary covers for toilet seats, and more particularly to improvements in auxiliary toilet seats of the portable and foldable type.

An object of the invention is to provide a light weight, economical and highly compact form of auxiliary toilet seat which may be conveniently carried in the purse or on the person of the owner. I

A more specific object of the invention is the provision of an auxiliary toilet seat cover of the foldable typehaving simple and efficient means for hingedly connecting the foldable sections thereof together.

Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description taken in conjunction with the drawing forming part of this specification, and in which:

Figure 1 is a view in perspective of a form of auxiliary toilet seat of the invention;

Figure 2 is an enlarged detail view in section taken along lines 2-2 of Figure 1;

Figure 3 is'a plan view of another form of auxiliary toilet seat of the invention; I

Figure 4 is an enlarged fragmentary view of the specific type of binge construction utilized along the front to back hinge line of the auxiliary seat of Figure 3; and

Figure 5 is a view in elevation which is representative of both forms of the auxiliary seat in folded condition.

Referring to the drawing, the auxiliary seat of Figure 1 is comprised of a plurality of relatively thin but stiff insert members disposed in slightly spaced relation with respect to each other, with said members being interconnected and maintained together by upper and lower plastic sheets 12 and 14, preferably of'the Pliofilm type. The inner and outer margins 16 and 18 of the sheets extend beyond the respective edges of the insert members 10 and are heat-sealed together to completely envelop the insert members. The plastic sheets constituting the envelope for the insert members are also heat-sealed together between adjacent insert members to thus form transverse hinge lines 20 and longitudinal hinge line 22. The sheets 12 and 14 extend for a sufiicient distance beyond the forward insert members to form a dependent skirt 24 provided with a reversely directed. portion 26 having heatsealed connections 28 with the dependent skirt to form pockets 30 which are suitable as storage receptacles for toilet paper, and the like.

After use, the two halves of the seat are folded downwardly about the longitudinal hinge line 22 so that the surfaces'of the two half portions of sheet 14 engage each other, following which the folded seat is further compacted by folding along transverse hinge lines 20. A strap 32 secured to the pocket fold 26 is then wrapped around 2,742,650 Patented Apr. 24, 1956 lCc to maintain the seat in a folded condition, as shown in Figure 5.

The seat of Figures 3 and 4 is specifically adapted for use'by children. The opening formed in the seat-being necessarily smaller than that of the seat of Figure 1, means have been provided along the longitudinal, or front to back, hinge line to support the weight of the child and prevent a downward collapsing action by the seat during use. The two forward insert members 42 and the two rearward insert members 44 are hingedly connected together at their inner ends by strips of adhesive tape, or the like, 46 disposed at the undersides of the insert members. members are formed to have a plurality of spaced fingerlike members 48, with the members 48 of each insert member extending through the notches defined between the members 48 of the other insert member and into overthe folded and compacted seat and the snap fastener means 34 and 36 carried by the strap, aresecured together lapping relation with a portion of the body of the insert member. This mutual overlapping relationship of the two forward insert members and the two rearward insert members provides for a sufiicient resistance to downward folding of the seat under the weight of the child to safely support the child. Here, as with the embodiment of Figure 1, the forward insert members 42, the rearward insert members 44, and a pair of intermediate insert members 50 are enclosed and interconnected together between upper and lower plastic sheets 52 and 54, the inner and outer margins 56 and 58 of which extend beyond the respective edges of the insert members and are heat-sealed together to envelop said members. The sheets '52 and 54 are also heat-sealed together between members 42 and 50 and between members 44 and 50 to thus form transverse hinge lines 60. The outer sheet 52 is slotted, as at 62 and 64, to disclose the finger-like members 48 and enable swinging movement thereof in the manner described. The sheets 52 and 54 extend beyond the forward insert members 42 to form a dependent skirt 66 which is provided with a reversely directed portion 68 having heat-sealed connections 70 with the skirt to form pockets 72. The seat is also provided with a strap 74 having snap fastener means 76 and 78.

What is claimed is:

A foldable auxiliary toilet seat comprised of forward and rearward pairs of oppositely disposed planar and relatively stitr" members, the interjacent ends of said pairs of members being disposed substantially along the longitudinal fold line of said seat, hinge means interconnecting the members of each pair, and means adapted to resist a collapsing folding action of said seat about said longitudinal fold line when said seat is positioned for use comprising spaced notches formed in the interjacent ends of the members of each pair defining finger-like elements therebetween, with the finger-like elements of each member extending through the notches of the other member into overlapping relation with the othermember.
