United Estates Patent INSIDE-OUTSIDE DOOR FASTENER Calvin Coolidge Carson, Heppner, Oreg.
Application August 19, 1955, Serial No. 529,495
1 Claim. (Cl. 292- 202) This invention relates to door fastening means.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a door fastener which is readily accessible to adults but which is inaccessible to children and pets.
It is another object of the preesnt invention to provide a door fastener of the above type which may be unlocked from both inside and outside of the door by adults.
Other objects of the present invention are to provide a door fastener having the above objects in mind which is of simple construction, has a minimum number of parts, is inexpensive to manufacture, and efficient in operation.
For other objects and a better understanding of the invention, reference may be had to the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is an inside perspective View showing a preferred embodiment of the present invention in operative i dicates a conventional door jamb within which is mounted the screen door 11 having the usual knob 12, substantially as illustrated.
In the practice of my invention, the screen door 11 (or other type of door) is provided with the bore 13 therethrough, a substantial distance above the knob 12, and at a height which is inaccessible to children or pets, a bolt or shaft 14 being rotatably mounted within the bore 13. The bolt or shaft 14 extends outwardly through the bore 13 and terminates in the externally threaded portion 15 on which is screwed and secured the wing nut 16, a washer 17 being provided on the shaft 14 intermediate the door 11 and wing nut 16. Thus, rotational movement imparted to the wing nut 16 from outside of the door will rotate the bolt 14, as will be obvious.
The bolt 14 extends inwardly beyond the door 11, and terminates in a laterally bent portion 18 which terminates in the flattened, enlarged end 19 for a purpose which will hereinafter become clear. A collar or washer 20 is integrally formed or secured to the end of the bolt 14 adjacent the laterally bent portion 18 and abuts one end of a coil spring 21 which sleeves the bolt 14 intermediate the door 11 and collar 20. A washer 22 is provided on the bolt 14 intermediate the other end of spring 21 and door 11.
A plate 23, rectangular in shape, is secured to the jamb 10 adjacent the bore 13 of the door by means of the mounting openings 24 and screws 25, the vertical edge of the plate 23 remote from the bore integrally formed at; right angles thereto with the outwardly extending plate 2 2,801,868 Patented Aug. 6, 1957 A rectangular plate 27 is integrally formed along the other vertical edge of plate 26 at right angles thereto in spaced relationship to plate 23 and parallel thereto, the plate 27 along its upper and lower edges being provided with the cutouts 28 and 29, respectively.
In operation the laterally bent portion 18 will normally reside in the slot 28 of the plate 2'7 to prevent the door from being opened by children and pets, who can only reach the knob 12. This is the normal locking position of the bolt. However, when it is desired to open the screen door, or other door from inside, it is only necessary to rotate the laterally bent portion 18 upwardly by means of the flattened enlarged end 19 out of the slot 28, as will be obvious. It will also be apparent that this unlocking motion may also be effected from outside of the door by means of the wing nut 16.
By providing the plate 27 with an oppositely disposed slot 29, the bracket is adapted for reverse doors.
While various changes may be made in the detail construction, it shall be understood that such changes shall be within the spirit and scope of the present invention as defined by the appended claim.
What I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States is:
A door fastener comprising bolt means rotatably mounted in the door a substantial distance above the door knob so as to be inaccessible to children and pets, bracket means mounted on the door jamb on the inside of the door, said bolt means including a laterally bent portion adapted to engage said bracket means in a releasable manner and means for rotating said laterally bent portion away from asid bracket from outside of the door, the door having a bore therethrough above the knob a substantial distance, said bolt means comprising an elongated bolt rotatably mounted within said bore and extending inwardly and outwardly thereof, said bolt at the inner end thereof being integrally formed with said laterally bent portion at right angles thereto, said means for rotating said bolt means from outside of the door comprising an externally threaded portion on the outer end of said bolt, a wing nut screwed thereon and a first washer on said bolt intermediate said wing nut and door, a collar connected to said bolt adjacent said laterally bent portion, a coil spring sleeving said bolt intermediate said collar and the door, and a second washer intermediate said spring and said door, said bracket means comprising a rectangular plate having mounting openings and being secured to the door jamb adjacent said door bore, an outwardly extending plate integrally formed on said first plate 'at substantially right angles thereto, and a third plate integrally formed at right angles to said second plate, substantially parallel to said first plate in spaced relationship thereto, said third plate at the upper and lower edges thereof having cutout portions adapted to receive therewithin said laterally bent portion, said laterally bent portion terminating in an enlarged end to facilitate rotational movement thereof from inside the door.
