PRESS FOR MAKlNG' HARNESS-PADS.

. SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 280,225, dated June 26, 1883.

Application filed April 6,1883. (N0 model.)

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JABEZ B. NOE, of Nevada, in the county of Vernon and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Presses for making Harness-Pads; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention,whichwill enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and usethe same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

Figure 1 is a top view of .the bed of the press. Fig. 2 is an end view of the bed of the press. Fig. 3 is a transverse section showing the leather after the former has been removed. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section, showing the plate and filling-strip in place. Fig. 5 is a transverse section showing the position after the edges have been turned down and secured. Fig. 6 is a planview of the follower. Fig. 7 is aplan view of the former. Fig. 8 is a plan view and edge view of the plate.

This invention relates to presses for harnesspads; and it consists in providing such presses with a transverse strip for varying their depths, as hereinafter fully set forth.

In the annexed drawings, the letter A indicates the bed of a press, supported upon suit. able legs, a, and having the concavity (1, sides a a broad end a with a hole, a in it, and the narrow end a, all made in one, piece. Within the bed and in the concavity (d is placed a follower, B, Fig. 6, adapted to such concavity, its ends b b resting on the ends a a of the bed. Passing through the side a of the bed is a set-screw, O, which enters a seat, 0, in the follower B, by which screw the follower is adjusted across the bed for different widths of pad. Upon the narrow end a of the bed is placed a strip, D, having pins d, which engage holes in the bed. Several of such strips of different thicknesses are to be kept on hand, and the proper .one used to suit the thickness required for the pad; and it is this strip to which my invention relates, and which is here in claimed.

With this press a former, E, Fig. 7, and a plate, G, Fig. 8, are to be used. Formers and plates of different sizes are to be used to suit different sizes of pad.

In using the press, the follower B is to be adjusted near to the proper place for the width of pad, Fig. l. The; leather for forming the under or curved surface of the pad is then placed over the press. The former E is placed on the leather, andby the strokes of a hammer forced down, carrying the leather into the concavity. The former E is then removed, and the leather F has the shape shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the edges f f projecting upward. The

plate G is then placed on the press, its ends 9 gresting on the ends f f of the lower leather, F, and the pin 9 is passed down through one the holes 9 in such plate, and into the hole a in the bed. A strip of leather, H, is placed on the plate, as shown in Fig. 4, and the follower B is forced up tight, binding the parts together. Theedges f f are then turned over the strip H, and fastenings I are driven through their ends, clinching against the plate G, as shown in Fig. 5. The follower is then loosened from the leather, thepin g withdrawn, and the plate and leather taken from the press. The plate is then pulled out, leaving a hollow pad, which can be stuffed'in the usual way.

I am aware that a press for making boxloops has been made with an adjustable follower, and also that a harness-pad press has been devised which is made in sections and has sectional formers and plates.

I am also aware that a press for making boxloops has been provided with a wedge which is to be placed in the bottom to regulate the thickness of the leather.

WVhat I claim is The bed A, provided with a detachable transverse strip, D, arranged at one end of the said bed, whereby the press can be adapted for formers of different depths, as set forth.
