UNITED STATES PATENT OFFI E CHRISTOPHER F. REBSTOCK, OF MERIDEN, CONNECTICUT.

COMPOSITION FOR COATING METALLIC SURFACES.

SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent NO 280,864, dated July 10, 1883.

i Application filed December 1 4, 1882. No specimensl To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHRISTOPHER F. REB- STOCK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Meriden, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful' Improvements in Composition for Coating Metallic Surfaces, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a composition of a gelatinous character and suitably colored, as-

hereinafter described and claimed, for coating metallic surfaces. 1 i

The object of my invention is to produce lacquers of variable degrees of transparency or shades of color for coating brass and similar metals, so as to produce a finish thereon and prevent the rusting of the material so coated. To this end I combine together the following ingredients, viz: turmeric, Spanish saffron, catechu, cochineal, sandalwood, and gelatine,

and place the same in a definite quantity of boiling water, the quantity of water depending uponthe quantity of material under treatment and the degree of transparency or shade the lacquer is to assume, and then boil the mixture until the volume of water has been reduced to a third of its original bulk.

Aformula that will be found very useful is as follows: Take of turmeric, three ounces; Spanish saffron, three ounces; catechu, four ounces; cochineal, four ounces; sandal wood, two ounces; and gelatine, six ounces. Place these ingredients in three gallons of boiling water and boil until one gallon only of liquor remains. Then pour said liquor off, and the lacquer is ready for use in the various ways in which lacquer is used.

While I have above indicated the proportions in which the several ingredients may be combined to produce a good serviceable lac quer, still I do not confine myself to such specific quantities, as the quantity of either one or more of the several ingredients may be changed or modified within suchlimits as not to change catechu, cochineal, sandalwood, gelatine, and

water, substantially as set forth.

In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.

CHRISTOPHER F. REBSTOCK. Witnesses:

J. H. SMITH, O. D. ROGERS.
