6 Claims. (cl. 20s-ss) The present invention relates to a utility compact including a pyrophoric lighter and one or more other uten sils, such as a pen, knife, pencil, nail file, screw driver, can opener, bottle opener, flash light, or the like.
1t is an object of the present invention to provide a utility compact including a pyrophoric lighter and at least one other utensil or implement in such combination that the lighter and the implement or implements can be used individually without any disassembly.
lt is a further object of the present invention to provide a utility compact including a pyrophoric lighter and at least one other utensil in such combination as to require a minimum of space, the compact having such a contiguration as to conveniently fit into a vest pocket or a ladys handbag.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a utility compact including a pyrophoric lighter and one or more other implements, and also a magazine holding a plurality of spare ints for the lighter.
' Another object of the invention is the provision of a utility compact including a pyrophoric lighter and one or more other implements which are interchangeably connected with the body of the pyrophoric lighter.
An object of the invention resides in the provision of a utility compact including a pyrophoric lighter and a plurality of other implements which are interconnected to form a unit which is removably mounted on the lighter body and can be interchanged for other units or for an individual implement, for example a flashlight.
The novel features which are considered characteristic A of the invention are set forth with appended claims. The invention itself however and additional objects and advantages thereof will best be understood from the following description of embodiments thereof when read in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. l is a portion of a side elevation of pact according to the invention;

The utility compact illustrated in Figs. l to 3 of the drawing includes a pyrophoric lighter of which only the lower part is shown. The lighter extends from a casing member 1 including a fuel tank and is provided with a conventional abrasive wheel 2 which is adjacent to a flint projecting from a tube 3 which extends through the casing 1 and contains a coil spring 9 for pressing a llint to the wheel 2. The lower portion of the member 1 is of the compact shown in the compact shown in provided with a bore 5 aligned with the lower end lof the` tube 3 and closed by a screw plug 10. A slide 6 can be pushed into and pulled out of a channel 17 forming part of a utensil holding member 4, a handle 8 being provided at the end of the -slide 6 for this purpose. The slide 6, which is shown in dashdot lines in partlyY pulledout position, is provided with a plurality of bores 7 for individually receiving a spare flint. individually aligned with the bore 5, so that a new flint can be pushed into the tube 3 after removal'of the plug 10 and spring 9. The member 4 is held in the lower portion of the member 1 between flaps depending fromvthe sides of the member 1. Utensils, such as knife 14, a.'
bottle opener 15, a nail tile 16 are arranged on either side of the channel 17 and inside of the aps of the member 1 when the utensils are in rest position. The utensils are hinged to the holding member 4 by means of a pin 11 extending also through the downwardly extending ap portions of the casing 1. A receptacle or holder 12, also hinged to the member 4 by the pin 11, is below the channel 17 when in retracted position. The holder 12 may be used for interchangeably holding a pencil 13 or an inkcartridge of a pen. When a utensil is used, it is swung on the pin 11, as is the the member 1 serving as a handle.
The modification illustrated in Figs. 4 to 6 shows a cylindrical flint magazine member 6 rotatably inserted into a cylindrical cavity of utensil holding means 4',

n 3 into the tube 3. The utensil holding means 4 can be disconnected from the member 1 by removing screws 18 to provide access to the top of the magazine 6 for refilling the latter. Utensils 12 to 16 are hinged to the holding means 4as in the modification according to Figs. 1 to 3.
The modification illustrated in Figs. 7 to 9 includes a flint magazine member 6 rotatably inserted into a cyY lindrical cavity in the bottom portion of a casing 1, the member 6 having a plurality of bores 7" placed in a circle, each containing a spare flint. The member 6" has a portion 8" accessible from the outside for rotating the magazine 6". A utensil holding means 4" adapted to cover the bores "l" is slidably and exchangeably connected with and adapted to hold member 6 in the casing 1". The means 4" is provided with a bore 5 closed by a plug 10". When a flint is exhausted, it may easily be replaced by a new one stored in the magazine member 6". Upon temporary removal of the screw plug` 10" closing the bore 5" in the means 4 and of the coil spring 9" in the flint tube 3, the magazine 6 can be rotated, so that a new liint may be selected and transferred into the tube 3". After reinsertion of the spring 9" and of the plug 19", the new flint is moved into operative position. Removal of the plug 10 and ofthe spring 9" 'makes it possible to push the utensil holding means 4 to the right, so that the magazine 6" can be refilled. The flap-like portions 19 of `the utensil holding means 4" swingably support a set of utensils 12 4to 16 by means of a pivot 11.
The modication illustrated in Figs. l0 to l2 includes a flint magazine member 36 containing a great number of spare ilints. The member 36 is attached to a casing 31 and includes two plates 21, a spacer 22 separating the plates and leaving a recess 23 accommodating a plurality of tubes or sleeves 24 which are adapted to individually receive a spare-flint. A lip portion 2S on the plates 21 prevents the sleeves from falling out of thel recess 23. An endless flexible belt 26 covers the sleeves 24. The belt is accessible from the outside and can be revolved for placing a sleeve 24 containing a flint in line with bores 27 of the plates 21 and with a flint tube 33 of a conventional pyrophoric lighter. A utensil holding means 34 is provided with protuberances fitting into corresponding grooves of the casing 31 for slidable attachment of theholding means 34 to the casing 31. The utensil holding means 34 is provided with a bore 3S. When a tiint is exhausted, it may easily be replaced by a new one, stored in the magazine member 36, upon temporary removal of a screw plug 32 and of a coil spring 37. If the screw plug 32jand the spring 37 are removed, the utensil holding member 34 is free to be moved to the right, so that the sleeves 24 can be individually aligned with the bore 27 of the lower plate 21. After return of the utensil holding member 34 to its former position, the spring 37 and the screw plug 32 are reinserted urging a new flint into operative position and holding the member 34 in place.
The modification shown in Figs. 13 to l5 includes a casing 38 containing fuel fora pyrophoric lighter, a tube 39 extending through the casing, a utensil holding member 34 slidably attached to the casing 3S and having a bore 45 adapted to be aligned with the end of the tube 39, and a liint magazine 46 having a plurality of grooves 47 for individually accommodating a sparejflint. When a flint is exhausted it may be replaced by a new one stored in the magazine 46. Upon temporary removal of a screw plug 4@ closing the bore 45 and of a spring 49, the holding member 34' is tree to be moved to `the right, so that a iiint can be taken from the magazine member 46 and placed into the tube 39. By moving the utensil 4holding member 39 back to its former position, the spring 49 and the screw plug 4t) can be reinserted, urging ther new fiint into operative position and locking the holding member 34' to the casing 38. The utensilholding member 34' is provided with a pivot means 11 swingably supporting a variety of utensils, such as a holder 12 exchangeably accommodating a replaceable ink cartridge 13 or a pencil, a knife 14, and the like. When not in use, the utensils rest in a recess 17' of the holding means 34.
As shown in Figs. 16 to i3, a utensil holding means 44 may be placed between flaps downwardly extending from a casing member 41, a flint tube 43 extending through the member 41 and being aligned with a bore 42 closed by a screw plug 44, as in the modification shown in Figs. l to 3. Upon temporary removal of the screw plug 44 and of a spring 4S, a worn flint may be replaced by a new one. No special flint storage magazine is provided in this modification Yof the utility compact. Utensils 12 to 16 are pivoted to the holding means 44 by means of a pivot 11. When in rest position, the utensils are in a recess 17".
In the modification shown in Figs. 19 to 2l, an interchangeable utensil supporting means 45 is held and secured by lip portions 2,8 of fiaps 54 depending from a casing 51, the rest of the device being similar to that illustrated in Figs. 16 to 18. The utensil holding means support a flashlight 29 and a battery 30 which may be substituted by a set of utensils swingably connected to the holding means which is in the form of a slide member adapted to be inserted in the channel formed by the flaps 54 `and the lips 28.
Figs. 22 to 24 illustrate an embodiment of the invention in which the lighter is in upright position. It includes a casing 48 containing fuel, the casing 48 being attached to a utensil holding means 50. The latter is provided with a bore 55 for receiving flnts which are pressed by a coil spring 59 against an abrasive Wheel 20 which is also supported by the holding means 50. The bottom of the bore 55 is closed by a screw plug 30. The holding means 50 include lateral iiaps 52 to which a set of utensils is pivoted as in the modification illustrated in Figs. l to 3.
The modification shown in Figs.V 25 to 27 differs from that shown in Figs. 22 to 24 in that the ints and the spring 59 are contained in a tube 53 disposed in a fuel containing casing 48'. The lower end of the tube 53 is closed =by a plug 30.
While specific embodiments of the invention have been shown and described, it will be apparent to those skilled in the art that various changes, modifications, substitutions, additions and omissions may be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
l. A utility compact comprising, in combination, a pyrophoric lighter having a casing, holding means extending from said casing and having portions forming an oblong recess, an oblong liint magazine member placed in said recess and being held in place by said holding means, a plurality of utensils, and means for movably connecting said utensils with said holding means and affording movement of said utensils into said recess and adjacent to said flint magazine member when the utensils are at rest, and affording movement of said utensils to extend outside of said holding means and of said casing when said utensils are in operating position.
2. A utility compact as defined in claim l in which said holding means form a separate element and in which means are provided for removably connecting said holding means to said lighter casing.
3. A utility compact comprising, in combination, a pyrophoric lighter having a casing, holding means extending from said casing, a longitudinal recess in said holding means, a flint magazine having a longitudinal coniiguration and being slidably inserted in said recess7 a plurality of utensils, and means individually movably connecting 'said utensils with said holding means and affording mover ment of said utensils into said recess and adjacent to said magazine when the utensils are at rest, and alfording movement of said utensils to extend outside of said holding means and of said casing when said utensils are in operating position.
4. A utility compact comprising, in combination, a pyrophorie lighter, a casing for said lighter, a holding member forming a cover, a plurality of utensils, means for movably connecting said utensils with said holding member and affording movement of said utensils into said holding member to be covered thereby when `said utensils are at rest and affording individual movement of said utensils to project from said holding member when said utensils are in operating position, means for removably connecting said holding member to said lighter casing, and a plurality of cavities in said casing adapted to individually receive a spare int, said cavities being closed and the spare int being retained therein by said holding member.
5. A utility compact as defined in claim 1, in which said utensils have a substantially oblong configuration and are placed parallel to said fiint magazine in 'said recess when the utensils are in rest position.
6. A utility compact as dened in claim l, in which said utensils include a writing device having a holder which is pivotally connected with said holding means,
