1 Claim. c1. 12s-2s4 Another object of the invention is to provide a fitted diaper having a crotch portion and front and rear sections extending upwardly from the crotch portion, the rear section being formed with laterally extending wing portions which extend around the major portion of the waist section of the infant and which are provided at their terminals with improved fastening means for attachment to the overlying front section, the actual fastening elements being located at the opposed sides of the waist section so that no thickened areas of the diaper press against the tender tissues of the child regardless of whether he is lying on his stomach or on his back.
In accordance with the present invention the frontsection is of generally rectangular shape and is formed with slightly elongated vertical openings adjacent its upper corners. The terminals of the wing portions associated with the rear section are tapered and are introduced through these openings and then folded rearwardly around the opposed sides of the rear section and are fastened by detachable fastening means.
This arrangement permits the front section to be of lesser width than would otherwise be the case and thus reduces the leg spread of the infant. This makes for a more comfortable garment.
Yet another object of the invention isto provide a diaper of the character described which has plural fastening means so as to enable the same diaper to be used at the beginning as well as during the ensuing period of required use. The diaper may also be secured in place while the infant is in a standing position.

The diaper of the present invention is shown in plan view in Fig. 2 and it is of generally rectangular shape and includes a central area forming a crotch portion 10 and portions which, when the diaper is in position on the child extend upwardly from the crotch portion and forms a front section 11 and a rear section 12.
The front section is of substantially the .same width throughout or it may taper slightly inwardly or outwardly. At its upper end the front section has corners 13 and adjacent to but spaced from these corners there are formed slots 14 which are of elongated shape and whose longer edges are substantially parallel with the side edges of the body of the diaper.
The rear section has outwardly extending edges 15 forming wing portions 16 which terminate in points 20 where these edges meet on upper straight edge 21 of the rear section. The diaper is preferably made from a plurality of superimposed layers of absorbent material which are joined together around their edges by invisible stitch lines. Also, if desired, a moisture resistant pad 22 may be positioned and secured between two of these layers.
The wing portions are provided, adjacent their terminals, with one part 24 of a snap fastener. Desirably there are two of these snap fasteners secured in spaced relation on each side of the rear section and these fasteners are preferably secured to the outer layer only of the diaper so that no metal contacts the skin of the infant. At the outer end of the wing portions closely adjacent the points 20 are the other components 25 of the detachable fasteners.
To apply the diaper to the child the diaper is turned over from the position it occupies in Fig. 2 and the child is placed thereon. The wing portions 16 are then draped over the abdomen of the infant and the front section is raised to overlay the wing portions. The terminals of the wing portions are now inserted through the slots 14- and then draped rearwardly where snap fastener ele ments 25 are secured to complemental elements 24.
The sections of the Wing portions which now overlay the front section do increase the thickness of the diaper in these areas but this is no disadvantage even if the child is lying on his face since the Wing terminals are at the side and in areas where no substantial portion of the weight of the child presses against them. Conventional hook-and-eye arrangements may be used in place of snap fasteners.
While there have been described herein what are at present considered preferred embodiments of the invention, it will be obvious to those skilled in the art that many modifications and changes may be made therein without departing from the essence of the invention. It is therefore to be understood that the exemplary embodiments are illustrative and not restrictive of the invention, the scope of which is defined in the appended claim, and that all modifications that come within the meaning and'range of equivalency of the claim are intended to be included therein.
What I claim is:
A diaper formed from a plurality of superimposed layers of absorbent fabric and being of generally rectangular shape with a central area forming a crotch portion and portions extending from each end of the crotch portion forming front and rear sections which enclose the body of the wearer, a moisture resistant pad positioned and secured between said layers in the crotch portion, the front section having openings adjacent the corners of said sections, the rear section being defined by two opposed, outwardly curved edges forming wing portions of progressively increasing width which terminate at an upper straight edge of the rear section, said Wing portions extending through the openings when the diaper is on the wearer and provided with one portion of a detachable fastener at their ends, plural spaced complemental portions of the fastener secured to the sides of the rear section to secure said wing portions to said sides in place on the wearer while providing smooth unbroken front and rear central sections. 7
