Application July 6, 1956, Serial No. 596,225 3 Claims. (Cl. 128-284) The present invention relates to disposable diapers fabricated of sheets of material, one of the sheets having a Water absorbent property and the other of the sheets having a water repellant property.

An object of the present invention is to provide a disposable diaper which is easily and quickly put on an infant, and as easily and quickly taken ofi of the infant when soiled.

Another object of the present invention is to provide a disposable diaper which lends itself readily to impregnation with antiseptic solutions or soothing powders for the protection and comfort of an infant, one which is quickly adjustable to infants of many waist sizes, one which is economical to manufacture, and one which is highly effective in action.

These and other objects and advantages of the present invention will be fully apparent from the following description, when taken in connection with the annexed drawings, in which:

Figure 1 is a perspective view of the disposable diaper of the present invention;

Figure 2 is a front elevational view of the assembly of Figure 1;

Figure 3 is a fragmentary perspective view showing the means for adjusting the waistband to an infants girth;

Figure 4 is a perspective view of the means of Figure 3, showing the reverse and adhesively coated side edge;

Figure 5 is an undeveloped view of the inner face of the diaper of the present invention;

Figure 6 is an undeveloped view of the outer face of another form of the diaper according to the present invention;

Figure 7 is a fragmentary undeveloped view of a portion of the inner face of the form of the invention shown in Figure 6;

Figure 8 is a fragmentary view of an outer sheet, showing a gathering tape applied to the form of the invention shown in Figure 6; and

Figure 9 is an undeveloped view of still another form of the invention.

Referring in greater detail to the drawings, in which like numerals indicate like parts throughout the several views, the disposable diaper of the present invention is indicated in Figures 1 through 3, inclusive, and in Figure 5, and reference numeral 10, and is made from a folded structure, the structure embodying an outer sheet 11 of a material having a water-repellant property such as water-repellant paper and an inner sheet 12 of material having a water absorbent property such as water absorbent paper, the sheet 12 being conformably shaped to fit the outer sheet 11 and arranged in confronting face to face relation with respect to and superimposed upon the outer sheet 11.

Each of the side edges 13 and- 14 of the assembled sheets having medially thereof an inwardly extending arcuate cut-out 15 and 16, respectively.

The portions of the side edges 13 and 14 of the Patented May 13, 1958 assembled sheets 11 and 12 and the adjacent cut- outs 15 or 16 extend in diverging directions from the cut- outs 15 and 16 to the ends of the assembled sheets 11 and 12. The assembled sheets 11 and 12 are folded so that the diverging portion of the side edge 13 on one side of the cut-out 15 is in mating relation with the diverging portion of the side edge 13 on the other side of the cutout 15 and the diverging portion of the side edge 14 on one side of the cut-out 16 is in mating relation with the diverging portion of the side edge 14 on the other side of the cut-out 16.

The mating portions of the side edges 13 and 14 are bound together by pressure-sensitive adhesive or by other means.

A tear string 17 is positioned between and extends longitudinally along the adhesively bound mating portions of the side edge 13 and another tear string 18 is positioned between and extends along the adhesively bound mating portions of the side edge 14, the strings 17 and 18 having opposed free end parts 19 and 20 projecting from the adhesively bound mating portions of the side edges 13 and 14, respectively, adjacent the cut- outs 15 and 16, respectively. An adhesively coated tape 21 is positioned adjacent to and spaced from each end of the outer sheet 11 intermediate the side edges 13 and 14 of the latter, when the sheets 11 and 12 are in the assembled position. The tape 21 has an end portion 22 secured to the nonconfronting face of the outer sheet 11 and, as shown in Figure 3, is used to secure the assembled sheets 11 and 12 about the abdomen of an infant wearing the disposable diaper of the present invention, the diverging side edges 13 and 14 of the assembled sheets providing a relatively large top opening into the diaper for the placement of the infant and the tape 21 providing a means for securing the gathered upper end portion of the assembled sheets.

In Figure 6 is shown an undeveloped form of another embodiment of the present invention in which the strings 17 and 18 are omitted and in which the disposable diaper 23 has side edges 24 and 25, each provided with relative ly wide margins at one end which are adhesively coated as at 26 in Figure 7 and which, when the seats of the diaper 23 are in the assembled position, forms a tear tape for separating the mating portions of the side edges 24 and 25. in Figure 8, an adhesively coated tape 27 is provided for the diaper 23 for gathering the upper end portion in the manner disclosed above with reference to the disposable diaper shown in Figures 1 to 5, inclusive. The tape 27 may be attached in a manner similar to the attachment of tape 21 or it may be left separate and may be provided for either the front or the back portion of the assembled sheets which form the diaper 23.

In Figure 9, another embodiment of the disposable diaper of the present invention is shown in which the diaper 28 is provided with flexible tapes 29 and 30 projecting from the side edges 31 and 32, respectively, and other tapes 33 and 34, similarly positioned, for securing the diaper 28 about the abdomen of an infant.

It will be seen, therefore, that the disposable diaper of the present invention, having a relatively large opening through which the infant may be inserted, is easily and quickly put on an infant and as easily and quickly taken off of the infant when soiled, the tear strings 17 and 18 or the tapes formed by the marginal and adhesively coated edges 26 (in the second embodiment shown) providing a means by which the front and back panels of the diaper are separated from each other so that the diaper may be quickly removed from the infant.

While the inner sheet of the diaper above described is fabricated of paper, it is to be understood that it may be fabricated of a textile material having a water absorb- 3v ent property such as cotton gauze which may be impregnatedwith an antiseptic solution and driedor impregnated with a soothing powder for the protection and comfort of the infant.

What is claim'ed is:

l-.- An article of manufacture, a disposable diaper made from a folded structure, said structure embodying anouter' sheet of Water-repellant material and an-in'ner sheet of water-absorbent material conformably shaped to fit said outer sheet and superimposed upon said outer sheet, each of the side edges of said assembled sheets having medially thereof an inwardly extending arcuate Gut-out with the portions of the side edges of the assembled sheets between each of the ends of the sheets and the adjacent cut-out extending in diverging directions to the ends of said sheets, said assembled sheets being folded so that the diverging portions of the side edges of the sheets on one side of the cut-outs are in mating relation with the diverging portions of the side edges of the sheets on the other side of the cut-out's, said mating portions being adhesively bound together, and a tear string positioned between and extending longitudinally along each of the adhesively bound mating portions and having opposed free end parts projecting from each of the adhesively bound mating portions.

An article of manufacture, a disposable diaper made from a folded structure, said structure embodying an outer sheet of water-repellant material and an inner sheet of water-absorbent material conformably shaped to fit said outer sheet and superimposed upon said outer sheet, each of the side edges of said assembled sheets having medially thereof an inwardly extending arcuate cut-out with the portions of the side edges of the assembled sheets between each of the ends of the sheets and the adjacent cut-out extending in diverging directions from the cut-out to the ends of said sheets, said assembled sheets being folded so that the diverging portions of the side edges of the sheets on one side of the cut-outs are in mating relation with the diverging portions of the side edges of the sheets on the other side of the cut-outs, said mating portions being adhesively bound together, and a tear string positioned 4 between and extending longitudinally along each of the adhesively bound mating portions and having opposed free end parts projecting from each of the adhesively bound mating portions adjacent to the adjacent one of said cut-outs.

An article of manufacture, a disposable diaper made from a folded structure, said structure embodying an outer sheet of water-repellant material and an inner sheet of water-absorbent material conformably shaped to fit said outer sheet arranged in face to face confronting relation with respect to and superimposed upon said outer sheet, each of the side edges of said assembled sheets having'medially thereof an inwardly extending arcuate cut-out with the portions of the side edges of the assembled sheets between each of the ends of the sheets and the adjacent cut-out extending in diverging directions from the cut-out to the ends of said sheets, said assembled sheets being folded so that the diverging portions of the side edges of the sheets on one side of the cut-outs are in mating relation with the diverging portions of the side edges of the sheets on the other side of the cut-outs, said mating portions being adhesively bound together, a tear string positioned between and extending longitudinally along each of the adhesively bound mating portions and having opposed free end parts projecting from each of the adhesively bound mating portions, and an adhesively coated tape positioned adjacent to and spaced from each end of said outer sheet intermediate the side edges thereof and having an end portion secured to the nonconfronting face of said outer sheet, said tape being adapted to secure the adjacent portion of said assembled sheets in gathered relation about the abdomen of an infant.
