ANTHONY D. GLOV 12 y in Arrow/ United States PatentO HOMIEMAKING UNIT Anthony D. Glover, Austin, Tex. Application August 23, 1954, Serial No. 451,540 2 Claims. Cl. 312-49 This invention relates to a new and improved homemaking unit particularly adapted for use in'schools, or the like, for the teaching of homemaking subjects and which unit is relatively compact and economical and yet provides a full set of equipment for each student and to a new and improved method of forming such a unit.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a new and improved homemaking unit of the type set forth wherein all of the functional members may be completely enclosed when not in operation and allowing the device to be utilized as a table.
Another object is to provide a new and improved method of making a homemaking unit of the type set forth.
1 Another object of the invention is to provide a new and irnprovedhomemaking unit containing a full set of equipment including a sewing machine, ironing board and storage cabinet for each student.
Another object of the invention is to provide a new and improved arrangement of the type set forth which is adapted to function as a complete unit for a plurality of students.
. Another object of the invention is to provide a new and improved apparatus of the type set forth having built-in wiring systems.
Another object is to provide a device of the type set forth in which the top surface of the sewing machine base is level with the table top so that both surfaces may be used by the sewing machine operator as one large working surface.
Another object is to provide a new and improved device of the type set forth having a sewing machine compartment, ironing compartment and bank of drawers on each side of the unit with the drawers in the middle and with sliding support for the sewing machine with a compartment on the inside of the sewing machine support and adapted to contain accessories, or the like.
Another object is to provide a new and improved double extension arrangement for supporting the sewing machine, which extension slides into the main support and a vertically adjustable support for said sewing machine support.
Another object is to provide a new and improved device of the type set forth which may be employed as a table when not in use for teaching.
Another object is to provide a new and improved homemaking unit of the type set forth wherein each of the students is adapted to be supplied with a full set of equipment which equipment is within ready reach of the student at all times.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings. It will be understood that changes may be made in the details of construction and arrangement of parts shown and described, as the preferred form has been given by way of illustration only.
Referring to the drawings:
2,875,009 Patented Feb. 24, 1959 Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 4, but showing the stor age and sewing machine portions of the device; and
Fig. 6 is an exploded view showing the five major parts of which the device is constructed.
Referring more particularly to the drawings wherein similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout, the apparatus shown embodying the invention comprises two identical reversely positioned cabinet units 10 on base 10a and having a table top 11 thereover, said table top having the overhanging edge 12 completely surrounding the unit. The overhanging portion 12 allows ample knee room and allows the device to be used as a table for dining, conferences, or other general use when the device is not otherwise employed.
In each side of the cabinet units 10 is provided an ironing compartment or the like normally closed] by the door 13 at one end of the cabinet section 10, and a sewing machine compartment or the like, on the opposite side of the unit and normally closed by the sliding door or support 14 and between the two cabinet units is posi- Within the ironing board compartment'13a is positioned an ironing board 16 which folds into the compartment 13a for storage and in the compartment 13a is positioned a storage rack 17 for supporting an electric iron 18.
Each unit is completely wired with an electric plug for each appliance and a common outlet for connecting the wiring system of the unit to an electric circuit. A single fuse 19 is provided in the ironing compartment for the entire unit. With the unit wired completely, with a single common outlet, the entire unit can be plugged into the room electrical power supply at one point.
The sewing machine compartment is adapted to be closed by the door or vertical support 13 as previously described, and the sewing machine support 20a is carried on the double extension ball bearing glides 20 and 21 which are preferably constructed of metal. The vertical support 14 is provided with the post 22 under which is the rubber wheel or caster 23, and this vertical support 14 at the extremity of support 20a retains the support completely solid or rigid and by adjusting the height of wheel 23, adjustment can be made for non-level floors.
On support 20, for the sewing machine 24, is the pivotal support 25 which may be folded down when not in use allowing the sewing machine to be stored within the ca'binet and when in use retains the sewing machine level with the table top 11 so that both surfaces can be used by the sewing machine operator as one large working surface.
Generally, the complete homemaking unit can be broken down into five major parts, the top 11, the base 10a, the cabinet section comprising two identical sewing machine ironing board cabinet units 10 and the central drawer or storage section. The base 10a is constructed on a rectangular frame and on the top side of the base and adjacent the opposite ends are'positioned triangle location :blocks B with twosets of four location blocks arranged in such configuration as to have an open ended cabinet unit placed over each setof location blocks and secured thereto by screws extending through the sidewalls of the cabinet unit into each of the blocks. A total of eight such location blocks are screwed into the upper surface of the base and the two identical sewing machine-ironing board cabinet units are constructed separately each with a sewing machine compartment at one end and the ironing board compartment at the other end and the two cabinet units each have grooves Gin their adjacent surfaces on which are positioned shelves S for supporting drawers 15. One such sewing machine-ironing equipment cabinet unit is positioned on one end of the base a andlocated by means of location blocks B and secured thereto as described above and another of such cabinet units is positioned on the other end of base 10a with the sewing machine opening to the opposite side and this section is secured to its respective locating blocks B. The top 11 is then lifted into place and on the under side of the top are location blocks B like those on the top surface of the base and screws are then run through the side of the cabinet units into these location blocks B, and shelves S are then slipped into the oppositely disposed grooves G on the inside adjacent surfaces of the cabinet units and the drawers 15 slipped in between these shelves.
It will be noted that the over all length of the home? making unit can be varied by increasing or decreasing the width allowed for the drawers 15, or if desired, the drawers 15 can be eliminated completely, or located atthe ends with the cabinet units nextto each other.
From the foregoing, itwill be seen that I have'provided a simple, efficient and economical arrangement for a plurality of students wherein each of the students will have a complete set of operating equipment with such equipment readily available. within reach.
I claim:
1. In a device of the character. described a rigid unitary rectangular base, a set of blocks on said base at each end thereof, a pair of pedestal-like cabinets each positioned and retained on said base by one of said sets of blocks, a rectangular table top of greater length and width than said base, two sets of blocks on the undersurface of said table top to engage said pedestal-like cabinets to .posi- I tion and retain said table top on said pedestal-like cabinets, shelves supported by said pedestal-like-cabinets and one facing each direction, may be placed on each shelf.
2. The device of claim 1 in which at least one of said pedestal-like cabinets including 'a compartment adapted to house a sewing machine or the like, is provided with a vertical panel normally closing said compartment, and is provided with a support member on said panel outwardly of said panel to extend, when said panel is in closed position beyond said base, a roller on the lower end of said support to contact the floor, whereby said panel may be moved horizontally away from said compartment, a horizontal support member adapted to support a sewing machine or the like carried by said panel, and guide*e'lements within said cabinet for said horizontal support member, said horizontal support member being secon structed and arranged as to support a sewing machine or the like level with said table top.
