SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 289,124, dated November 27, 1883,

.To all whom it may concern-.-
Be it known that I, MosEs MosLnR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cincinnati, county of Hamilton, State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Doors for Fire-Proof Safes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improvement in fireproof-safe doors, such as shown in my application for patent filed February 10, 1883. Its object is to cheapen the construction therein shown and prevent the liability of the frame to warp or get out of shape in molding. Its object-is also to provide for filling the door from the back, so that it may be finished before the filling is put in which makes it u11- wieldy. I
With these objects in view my invention consists in casting the chamber for the lock and bolt work with the front flange or edge of the door-frame, leaving the portion of the door back of it an open frame, and providing a loose plate to snugly fit within the opening, so that when in place it forms the back of the door, leaving the lock and bolt work exposed, so that they are readily accessible for removal or re pairs without disturbing the other parts of the door.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is an inside plan View of a door embodying my improvements. The back plate, which covers the fireproof filling, is shown removed, and is represented in Fig. 3. The lock and bolt work are also shown removed, as these may be of any approved construction. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the door, taken through line 00 x of Fig. 1.
The door-frame A 'is of the ordinary construction, except that it has cast with its front edge or flange a shallow chamber, B, to receive the lock and bolt work. The walls of this chamber come flush with the inner edge of the door-frame. From the edge of the doorframe and the walls of chamber B project in- 5 wardly lugs b, to form bearings, upon which rests the back plate, 0, its outer side coming flush with the edges of the door-flanges. The inner wall of chamber B has bosses b cast with it, which are drilled into from the edge of the door to form pockets for the reception of the inner ends of the front-edge bolts. There are also lugs I) cast upon the bottom of chamber B, which are drilled from the top and bottom edges of the door, to furnish bearings for the x top and bottom edge bolts.
I have shown between the front plate, D, which is of ordinary construction, and the bot tom of chamber B (see Fig. 2) two forms of bearings for the lock and bolt spindles. One form, E, being cast in one piece with the chamber B, and the other, E, being in the form of a hollow stay-brace. \Vith either form the arbors, lock, and bolt work are entirely isolated from the fireproof filling, and will therefore not be corroded or injured by the acid or moisture given off the cement.
I do not broadly claim herein a safe-door back east in'one piece with the side flanges, and having a depression in its face for the reception of the lock and bolt work, as that is the subject of my said pending application.
\Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a door for fire-proof safes, the combination, as specified, of the hollow frame A and the chamber B, cast with and forming part of said frame, with the removable plate to close the space in the rear portion of the frame, the walls of said chamber B coming flush with the inner face of the door, and having lugs b around it and the inside of the door-frame to form bearings for the said back plate, 0.
