more particularly, to a holder of the type in which a plurality of permanent magnets are mounted on a base to hold articles having metal parts.
The general object of the invention is to provide a new and improved holder of the above character which elfectively holds the articles in place, which prevents the articles from turning or slipping while held by the holder and which is especially adapted for holding preformed bow ties with metal clips.
A more detailed object is to arrange the magnets in pairs on the base with the magnets projecting beyond the face of the plate and with horizontally alined slots formed in the projecting ends of the magnets of each pair to receive the metal parts of the articles such as the clips of a bow tie.
The invention also resides in correlating the width of the slots with the width of the clips so that the clips are held firmly and prevent the tie from turning down and becoming wrinkled.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent fro-m the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a bow tie holder embodying the novel features of the present invention.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view taken along the line 2-2 in Fig. 1.

As shown in the drawings for purposes of illustration, the invention is embodied in a holder 5 for a preformed bow tie 6 which includes the elongated narrow clips 7 conventionally used to fasten the tie to the collar of a shirt. The holder comprises a fiat generally rectangular base plate 8 which may conveniently be molded from plastic material and is provided near its upper end with a hole 9 so that the plate may be hung vertically on a wall. A plurality of permanent magnets 10 are mounted on the base plate and serve to hold the ties on the plate magnetically through the medium of the clips 7.
To protect the ties 6 from dust while they are stored on the holder 5, a transparent plastic cover 11, which is generally rectangular and slightly smaller than the base plate 8, is hinged to the plate so that normally it covers the plate but may be swung away to permit access to the ties. Herein, the cover is hinged at its upper end to swing about a horizontal axis by pivot pins 12 which project through lugs 13 upstanding from the top of the cover and through ears 14 projecting out from the front face 15 of the base plate. The periphery of the cover fits over a head 16 extending around the face 15 of the plate near the edges thereof.
In accordance with the present invention, the magnets 10 are constructed and arranged on the base plate 8 in a novel manner so that the ties 6 are held securely in place and do not tip down and become wrinkled while they are stored on the holder 5. To these ends, the magnets are employed in pairs with the magnets of each pair horizontally spaced apart and each magnet is formed with a horizontal slot 17, the slots of each pair being alined, so that the clips 7 are received and held in these slots. The magnets are mounted on the plate 8 to project beyond the front face 15 so that the slots 17 are disposed wholly in front of the plane of this face thereby permitting the clips to be firmly seated at the bottoms of the slots.
In the present instance, the magnets 10 are short cylin ders of any suitable permanent magnet material, such as Alnico, and are located on the base plate 8 by circular ribs 18 integral with the plate. The magnets are disposed in the recesses formed by the ribs 18 and the inner ends of the magnets are cemented or otherwise suitably secured to the base plate. The ribs 18 are arranged so that there are five pairs of magnets with one pair directly above the other and the magnets are oriented to place the slots 17 horizontally.
The bottom wall 19 (Fig. 2) of each slot 17 is disposed in front of the outer edge of the associated rib 18 to permit the clip 7 to seat against this wall. In order to prevent the ties 6 from tipping down, the width of each slot is made only slightly larger than the width of a clip. Thus, the clips cannot turn in the slots and the ties do not turn down and rest against the base plate 8.
It will be observed that the bow ties are firmly held by the magnets 10. The ties cannot slide down nor can they tip. Moreover, the clips 7 are easily inserted in the slots 17 and, once inserted, are seated against the bottom walls 19 of the slots.
I claim as my invention:
1. A holder for preformed bow ties each having elongated narrow metal clips of predetermined width disposed at each end of the tie, said holder comprising a flat base plate having a vertical front face, a plurality of permanent magnets each having a slot formed at one end and extending across the full width of the magnet, and means for rigidly securing the other ends of said magnets to said plate with the slotted ends of the magnets facing out wardly and with the slots disposed wholly in front of the plane of said face, said magnets being arranged on said plate in pairs with the magnets and the corresponding slots of each pair horizontally alined and the width of said slots being generally equal to the width of said clips whereby the clips of a tie are closely received in the slots of a pair of magnets.
2. A holder for preformed bow ties each having elongated narrow metal clips disposed at each end of the tie, said holder comprising a flat base plate having a vertical front face, a plurality of permanent magnets each having a slot formed in one end and extending across the full width of the magnet, and means for rigidly securing said magnets to said plate with the slotted ends of the magnets projecting beyond said face and with the slots disposed wholly in front of the plane of the face, said magnets being arranged on said plate in pairs with the magnets and the corresponding slots of each pair horizontally alined whereby the clips of a tie are received in the slots of a pair of magnets.
3. A holder for an article having alined and elongated narrow metal portions, said holder comprising a base having a generally flat vertical surface, and a plurality of permanent magnets rigidly fastened to said base and projecting outwardly beyond the plane of said surface, said magnets being arranged in pairs with the magnets of each pair horizontally alined and each of said magnets having a horizontal slot formed in its outer face and having its full depth disposed beyond said plane, the slots of each pair of magnets being alined to receive the elongated metal portions of said article.
