1 Claim. (Cl. 2-265) The present invention relates to a slide fastener, and more particularly to a slide fastener which may be utilized on articles of clothing, and in particular, womens dresses.

For many years, in many types of garments, there has been the problem of closing adjacent garment edges which carry a slide fastener above the slide fastener. To this end, a wide variety of closure members have been provided. For example, it is customary practice to provide the back of women's dresss with a hook formed of metal and an eye or loop formed of thread above the main slide fastener which is used on the back of the dress.

There have been some suggestions for closure members on tapes above the elements of a slide fastener. However, such closure members, as have been sug gested, are inadequate. Thus, a snap fastener is not satisfactory for the purposes of the present invention, since a snap fastener requires overlapping of the tapes of the slide fastener and is unsightly. There are objections to each of the other types of closure members known to me which have been suggested.

This invention has as an object the provision of a novel slide fastener.

This invention has as another object the provision of a slide fastener which may be closed above the end of the fastener elements without creating an unsightly protrusion.

This invention has as yet another object the provision of a slide fastener having prime utility for closing the slit back of a woman's dress.

This invention'has as still another object the provision of a slide fastener which may be closed above the end of the fastener elements and which may be readily sewn onto a garment.

Other objects will appear hereinafter.

For the purpose of illustrating the invention there is shown in the drawings forms which are presently preferred; it being understood, however, that this invention is not limited to the precise arrangements and instrumentalities shown.

Referring to the drawings:

Figure l is an elevations] view revealing a fragmentary portion of a garment comprising the slide fastener of the present invention, such as the slit back of a ladys dress, with the slide fastener of the present invention being in closed disposition.

Figure 2 is a section taken on line 2-2 of Figure 1.

Figure 3 is a fragmentary elevational view taken from the rear of a slide fastener of the present invention.

Figure 4 is a fragmentary elevational view taken from the front of a slide fastener of the present invention.

Figure 5 is a view of the upper portion of a modified embodiment of the slide fastener of the present invention.

Figure 6 is a sectional view of a modfied embodiment of the slide fastener of the present invention.

Referring to the drawings, and initially to Figures 1 through 4 inclusive, the slide fastener of the present inice vention is designated generally as 10. The slide fastener 10 comprises a pair of tapes 12 and 14which are permanently held together by link 16. The tapes .12 and 14 carry mating slide fastener elements 18 and the slider 5 20. The slider 2% is reciprocally movable in respect to the elements 18 intermediate the link 16 and the stops 22.

No claim to invention is made to any particular form of slide fastener elements, or slider, and the present invention is to be construed as comprehending any of the 10 wide variety of elements and sliders known to the art.

At the top of tape 12 there is provided on the'undersurface the eye 24. The eye 24 should be spaced from the stops 22, a short distance, such as a distance equal to the distance occupied by from for example five to 5 ten fastener elements. The eye 24 is secured to the underside of tape 12 by either rivet means or by sewing.

At the top portion of tape 14 in mating alignment with eye 24 is hook 26, which may be sewn or riveted to the tape M, and in the illustrated embodiment is riveted to the tape 14. The hook 26 is constructed and arranged to be received within the eye 24, which position is shown particularly in Figures 2 and 4. When the hook 26 is 'received within the eye 24 the adjacent edges of the tapes l2 and 14 are spaced from each other a very short distance, closely simulating the disposition effected when the slide fastener elements 18 are closed.

In the illustrated embodiment, the slide fastener 10 is secured in a garment by lines of stitching 28 and 30, and is disposed beneath overlapping flaps 32 and 34 formed from the cloth 36 within which the slide fastener MD is disposed. A preferred embodiment of the invention comprises a hook 26 and eye 24' formed entirely of plastic as shown in Figure 6. This has the advantage of enabling the lines of stitching 28' and 30 to pass through such hook 236 and eye 24 penetrating an imperforate portion thereof 40 without damage to the sewing machine needle, and without the necessity of the care needed in the case of hooks and eyes formed of metal wire.

The use of the hook and eye 26 in the manner indi cat-ed permits the slide fastener 10 to be substantially concealed from view, since the overlapping flaps 32 and 34 conceal the slide fastener it). Even the tab 38 of slider 20 may be concealed beneath the fiaps 32 and 34. In this manner, the slide fastener 10 of the present invention when mounted within a cloth article of the present invention, namely one having the overlapping flaps 32 and 34, closely simulates a sewn seam when the slide fastener is in closed disposition.

in Figure 5 there is shown a modified embodiment of the slide fastener of the present invention namely slide fastener 40. in slide fastener 40, the modification comprises having the hook 26a on the rear face of the tape 14a, namely the precise construction heretofore shown, but the eye 24a is disposed on the front face of tape 12a. In this construction the hook 26a interlocks with the eye 24a, with such elements being disposed on opposite sides of the tapes 12a and 14a. This construction enables the slide fastener 40 to produce a somewhat converging effect at the top which may be pleasing to certain dress simulations.

It is, of course, to be understood that in place of the embodiment shown in Figure 5 the book may be disposed on the front face of one of the tapes and the eye disposed on the rear face of the other tape.

The present invention may be embodied in other ape cihc forms without departing from the spirit or essential attributes thereof and, accordingly, reference should be made to the appended claim, rather than to the fore.
