Description
United States Patent PACKAGE HOLDER Richard H. Catlett, Catlett-Johnson C0rp., 1309 W. Main St., Richmond, Va., and Robert F. Fitzpatrick, Richmond, Va.; said Fitzpatrick assignor to said Catlett Filed June 15, 1959, Ser. No. 820,475
2 Claims. (Cl. 225-42) The present invention relates to a new and improved holder for roll sheet dispensers.
An important object is to provide a simple, eflicient, compact and economical holder for a carton, box or package dispenser, in which is rotatably disposed a roll sheet of material, such as aluminum foil, paper and the like, so as to conveniently facilitate the withdrawal of a predetermined amount of the said material from the dispenser and the severing of the same at a minimum expenditure of time and effort.
Dispenser holders for cartons, boxes and packages for carrying sheet roll material and the like vary as to length, width and height depending upon the particular dimensions and size of the sheet roll material to be carried thereby. Accordingly, a further object is to provide a dispenser holder of a fixed or predetermined size and of larger dimensions than the largest dispenser, with which the holder is to be associated, with adjustable means for accommodating within the holder dispensers of different lengths, widths and heights, so that a single holder may be efliciently used for maintaining roll sheet material of various sizes and shapes in proper dispensing position.
A still further object consists in providing the confronting sides of the holder with pairs of spaced vertically aligned slots for selectively receiving a retaining member or bar that extends transversely across the holder in front of the dispenser and is releasably secured to the holder, and is arranged selectively to extend through a pair of transversely aligned slots, so as to provide means for maintaining the dispenser and the roll of sheet material carried thereby in proper operative or dispensing position.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the following description when taken in conjunction with the accompanying claims and drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view, with parts in section, of a holder constructed in accordance with the present invention and showing its attachment to the underside of a kitchen cabinet or the like;
Figure 2 is a detail plan view of the holder;
Figure 3 is an end view of Figure l with parts in section;
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken substantially along the line 4-4 of Figure 2; and
Figure 5 is a detail view of an end portion of the transverse retaining member.
Referring to the drawings, indicates a holder preferably made of metal or other suitable light durable material and has an elongated horizontal base or bottom 11 of any desired length and width. As shown, the holder 10 is made of one piece and has the ends of the base 11 bent upwardly therefrom to form the end portions or uprights 12 that terminate in inwardly opposed horizontal flanges 13 and vertical flanges 7 spaced from the flanges 13. The flanges 13 may be provided with spaced openings 14 that receive suitable retaining means, such as screws 15, for detachably connecting "ice the holder 10 to the underside of any suitable supporting structure, such as the bottom '16 of the kitchen cabinet 17. Each of the vertical flanges 7 has spaced openings 8 for receiving screws or the like when it is desired to connect the holder to a vertical wall or supporting structure. Extending upwardly from the rear of the base 11 is a transverse flange 9, which is spaced from the lower ends of the flanges 7 and co-acts therewith to provide a stop for limiting the inward movement of the dispenser 18.
The holder 10 may have open front and rear sides and co-acts with the bottom of cabinet 17 to provide a closed top and also co-acts with the base .11 to form a recess or space for releasably receiving the roll sheet dispenser 18 or the like, which may be square in cross-section (Fig. 4) and of any desired conventional length, width and height, but of less length and width than the holder 10, so that it may easily be inserted into the holder to assume its dispensing position, or removed therefrom.
The base 11 has extending outwardly therefrom a transversely disposed cutting edge 21 (Fig. 2), so as to facilitate the severing of a predetermined portion 22 of the roll of sheet material 23 carried by the dispenser 18, such as aluminum foil or the like.
The confronting vertical sides 12 of the holder are provided with pairs of vertical slots 24 and 25, two of which are shown, but this number may be increased as operating conditions require. The slots in each pair are in transverse alignment, and are arranged selectively to have detachably inserted within each pair of transversely aligned slots 24 and 25 a transversely disposed retaining member or bar 26, preferably formed of a suitable transparent plastic material. The retaining member 26 has its end portions 27, each provided at its lower edge with a cutout or reduced portion 28 (Fig. 5), so as to provide a shoulder 29 arranged to engage the lower edge of each of the openings 24 and 25 when the retaining member is inserted into any pair of the slots, so as to constitute a stop for limiting the downward movement of the retaining member within the slots. Each of the cut-out portions is of such length as to space the lower edge 30 of the retaining member a slight distance above the bottom 31 of the base 11, so as to provide a clearance 32 through which the outer free end 22 of the sheet roll 23 loosely extends so as to be severed from the roll.
It will be seen that, by the selective insertion of the transverse retaining member 26 into the pairs of slots 24 and 25, an adjustable compartment 33 (Fig. 4) is formed, which is capable of receiving dispensers 18 of various lengths, widths, and heights, so as to maintain the same in proper dispensing position, and remove a predetermined portion of the roll 23 of the sheet material from the holder. The retaining member 26 may be provided with longitudinally spaced finger openings 34 to permit the convenient insertion or removal of the retaining member from the slots 24 and 25. The base 11 may also be formed with openings 35 (Fig. 3), which align with the screws 15 so as to receive a screwdriver or other suitable tool, not shown, for the purpose of securing the fastening means to the cabinet 17 or other support to which the holder 10 is to be connected. The base 11 may be formed with the spaced openings 36 adjacent the outer edge thereof to elevate the end of the sheet to facilitate pulling it forward.
The dispenser and the roll of sheet material carried thereby are inserted into the holder from the front thereof, and by reason of the adjustability of the compartment 33, the holder may conveniently house or accommodate dispensers of different lengths, widths, heights and shapes, thus insuring the dispenser irrespective of its size of being firmly held in proper dispensing position within the holder. In other words, should it be desired to use with the holder a larger dispenser than that shown in Figure 4, this may readily be done by inserting the retaining member 27 into the slots of the front transversely aligned vertical openings 24. Further, the length of the dispenser may vary within predetermined limits as determined by the dimensions of the holder, which, of course, is of such size as to be longer, wider and higher than the largest dispenser used for carrying roll sheet material, such as aluminum foil or the like. The front of the dispenser may have any suitable printed or advertising matter thereon, which will be prominently displayed when the dispenser is carried by the holder and the transparent retaining member is formed of optically clear material.
It will be understood that the form of the invention shown is merely illustrative of a preferred embodiment and such changes may be made as come within the purview of the following claims.
