SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 299,086, dated May 20, 1884.

Be it known that I, EWALD OVER, of the city of Indianapolis,- eounty of Marion, and State of Indiana, have invented certain new anduseful Improvements in Drivers for Fence- Iosts, of which the following is a specification.

My said invention consists in the combination, with a fence-post having a projection formed on its lower portion andnear its lower end, of a driver adapted to slide up and down on said post and drive the same into the ground by coming in contact with said projection, as will be hereinafter more fully described.

Referring to the accompanying drawings,

which are made a part hereof, and on which similar letters of reference indicate similar parts, Figure 1 is an elevation of a section of fence, the posts whereof are of a suitable'form to be set by the use of my invention; Fig. 2, a view of apost separately, on an enlarged scale, with the driver thereon raised, ready for a blow; Figs. 3, 4, and 5, horizontal sections on the dotted line .2 z, y y, and a; :r, respectively; and Fig. 6, a vertical section on the dotted line 20 w.

In said drawings, the portions marked A represent the stem or upper portion of the fence-post; B, the base thereof, or portion which enters the ground; and O, the driver. In the form shown the part A is composed of common angle-iron of a suitable size, which I regard as preferable for this purpose, and the part B is a suitably-formed casting, the form shown being an excellent one. These parts are secured together by the bolts a and the configuration of the parts, the part B hav ing suitable flanges and lugs to receive and support the part A, as shown. erative. The driver 0 is preferably a heavy metallic body of suitable shape and size, and

has a hole formed therein, which fits loosely around the part A of the post, but is too small to pass over the part B. It is preferably provided with suitable handles, 0, by which it may be lifted.

- The method of using my invention is as follows: The operator first forces the post as far into the ground as convenient by using said post itself as apuncturing-bar. The driver 0 is then placed over the top of the post and allowed to fall. It slides down the part A in its descent, and strikes upon the top or projecting portion 1) of the part B, driving it into the ground. This is repeated until the post is sufficiently driven, when the driver 0 is removed, and the post is ready to receive the wires or whatever is used to finish the construction.

By the use of this invention the posts are driven in such a manner that an upright position is always maintained, while by the use of a sledge, as is usual, the posts will generally be given more or less of a slant. The posts are also more liable to be battered or broken than by the use of my invention, and the work is more laborious.

Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The combination of a post and a driver therefor, said post consisting of a straight upper portion and an enlarged lower portion having a projecting portion, b, with which the driver is adapted to come in contact, and said driver consisting of a solid heavy block having a hole which is adapted to slip over the straight portion and come in contact with said projection as it descends, substantially as shown and specified.

2. The combination,withafence-post consisting of the parts A and B, the latter of which has a portion, 12, forming a projection on said post, of a driver, 0, adapted to slide up and down the portion A and drive the post by coming in cont-act with the projection 12, sub stantially as set forth.

3. The combination of the fence-post A B, having projection 11, and the driver C, having a hole therein and handles a, substantially as shown and described, and for the purposes specified.
