Description

E. L. BOYD SPRINKLER HEAD Dec. 26, 1961 Filed June 2, 1960 l m F INVENTOR.
3,014,668 SPRINKLER HEAD Eugene L. Boyd, 2565 Worden St., San Diego,
Filed June 2, 1960, Ser. No. 33,416 3 Claims. (Cl. 239-521) Calif.
This application is a continuation inpart of application bearing Serial Number 811,953, now abandoned, relating to a sprinkler head of the 180 degree type which sprinkles a rectangular area.
The object of the invention described'herein is to provide a sprinkler having a rectangular spray pattern which will fit any part of a rectangular area to be sprinkled, and be characterized by maximum convenience and simplicity in operation, for lawn and utility sprinkling.
The present sprinkler head has a longitudinal passage for directing water into a spray chamber and embodies a particular arrangement for delivering spray of substantially uniform density to an area of rectangular shape lying in front of the sprinkler. This arrangement will be more particularly illustrated and described in the appended drawings and in the specifications and claims which follow.
In the drawings:
FIGURE 1 is a front view of the sprinkler head.
FIGURE 2 is a side view of the embodiment shown in FIG. 1.
FIGURE 3 is a horizontal sectional view taken along the line VV of FIGURE 1.
FIGURE 4 is a diagram showing performance of my device.
In all references to the subject sprinkler head it .is understood to be disposed as in normal operation with the threaded end pointed downwardly and the longitudinal axis perpendicular to the surface of the area to be sprinkled.
Referring to the drawings it will be seen that the spray chamber 38 is a transverse slot opening to the front and to the sides of the body and that, in forming this chamber, the forward half of the longitudinal passage 36 is cut away, the rear half of the passage remaining as a semi-circular groove in the body whose terminal end is semi-conical in shape.
Onthe downwardly facing side of the upper wall 22 of the spray chamber 38 there is a spreader surface having three plane facets 30, 32, and 34 disposed in intersecting planes. The right and left facets 32, 34 are angled upwardly to the sides at 12 to 20 degrees, and preferably 16 degrees, and angled upwardly to the front at 8 to 12 degrees, and preferably 10 degress, from horizontal. The center facet 30 is angled upwardly to the front at 4 to 10 degrees, and preferably 7 degrees, greater angle than that of the other two facets 32, 34, or, in this instance, a total of 17 degrees .from horizontal.
The upper side 40 of the lower wall 24 of the spray chamber is a plane surface.
The rear wall 26 of the spray chamber 38 is substantially bisected by a vertical groove 36 which terminates at the spreader surface in the shape of a semicone, and has two small bosses located one on each side of the vertical groove and projecting forwardly into the spray chamber. These bosses 28 are cylindrical in shape with their forward ends conical.
In the present embodiment, the longitudinal passage is %2 inch in diameter and is circular in cross-sectional area. The body of the sprinkler head is inch square, and may also be circular in cross-sectional area, and may be made of metal, plastic, or other suitable sub stance. I
The lower end of the sprinkler head is adapted to be 3,914,663 Patented Dec. 25, 1961 connected to a source of water under pressure by means of threading, and may be connected by other means;
In operation, a jet or column of water under pressure rising through the longitudinal passage 36 and impinging upon the spreader surface 30, 32, 34 is spread into a sheet of spray and directed to a rectangular area as shown in FIGURE 4. Vertical fans of spray issue to the right and left along the rear wall 26, impinging upon the bosses 28 and are broken up into a fine spray. This spray is delivered to that area immediately adjacent to the sprinkler which would not otherwise be adequately sprinkled. Thus a high degree of uniformity of density is achieved.
While a single embodiment of the invention is herein disclosed, it is understood that the invention is not limited thereo, and is to be given the broadest possible interpretation within the terms of the claims which follow.
I claim:
1. A sprinkler head comprising a body including a longitudinal passage having one end open to a source of water under pressure and the other end opening into a spray chamber, said spray chamber being a transverse slot intersecting said longitudinal passage and opening to the front and to the sides of the body, said slot being formed by an upper slot wall, a lower slot wall, and a connecting rear slot wall, said body including on the said upper slot wall a spreader surface having three downwardly facing plane facets disposed in intersecting planes with the center facet angling upwardly to the front of the body, and the other two facets angling upwardly to the I front and to the sides of the body, said body further including .at the center of the said rear slot wall an uninterrupted groove extending vertically from the said lower slot wall to the said upper slot wall, said structure thereby delivering spray to all parts of a substantially rectangular area lying in front of the sprinkler head.
2. A sprinkler head comprising a body including a longitudinal passage having one end open to a source of water under pressure and the other end opening into a spray chamber, said spray chamber being a transverse slot intersecting said longitudinal passage and opening to the front and to the sides of the body, said slot being formed by an upper slot wall, a lower slot wall, and a connecting rear slot wall, said body including on the said upper slot wall a spreader surface having three downwardly facing plane facets disposed in intersecting planes with the center facet angling upwardly to the front of the body, and the other two facets angling upwardly to the front and to the sides of the body, said body further including at the center of the said rear slot wall an uninterrupted groove extending vertically from the said lower slot wall to the said upper slot wall, and means projecting forwardly from said rear slot wall into the said spray chamber for delivering a spray to an area immediately adjacent said spray chamber, the said structure thereby delivering a spray of substantially uniform density to an area of rectangular shape lying in front of said sprinklen head.
3. A sprinkler head comprising a body including a longitudinal passage having one end open to a source of water under pressure and the other end opening into a spray chamber, said spray chamber being a transverse slot intersecting said longitudinal passage and opening to the front and to the sides of the body, said slot being formed by an upper slot wall, a lower slot wall, and a connecting rear slot wall, said body including on the said the body, and the other two facetsangling upwardly to the front and to the sides of the body, said body further References Cited in the file of this patent including two bosses fixed to the said rear slot wall and UNITED STATES PATENTS projecting forwardly into the said spray chamber, said bosses being cylindrical in shape With conically shaped 1805782 Munz May 1931 forward ends, the said structure thereby delivering a spray 5 1,964,269 P? June 1934 of substantially uniform density to an area of rectangular 2'338273 Wllkms 1944 2,562,503 Meflan July 31, 1951 shape lying in front of the sprinkler head.
